http://attackofthefanboy.com/news/xbox-cloud-gimmick-nvidia-proving-buzzword/

http://graphics.cs.williams.edu/papers/CloudLight13/CloudLightTechReport13.mp4

Ever since Microsoft revealed the Xbox Live Cloud, many downplayed the technology as a gimmick. There seems to be a line in the sand and an ongoing argument as to what is, and what isnt, possible with the cloud. From a common sense standpoint, there are a lot of applications that seem like they would make good use of cloud computing. Things like matchmaking, stat-tracking, and other information intensive portions of games could definitely benefit from a low cost and efficient constant connection to the internet. But the portion of the argument that has most people disagreeing resides in the realm of graphics, and improving the power of hardware through the cloud. Sonys lead architect on the PlayStation 4 recently came out and explained that the cloud isnt necessarily the best place to boost graphics. Mark Cerny said in a recent interview that there are things that work well in the cloud, and there are things that dont. But that doesnt mean that others arent trying to get these things to work better. And by things, we mean offloading some elements of games graphics to the cloud, and reserving computational power on the hardware itself. One such company is Nvidia, which is working on the Cloudlight System. Detailed in a new research paper out of Williams College (thanks NeoGaf), the Cloudlight system is used for computing indirect lighting in the Cloud to support real-time rendering for interactive 3D applications on a users local device. The developers working on the project explore some of the tradeoffs that working with the cloud actually has, but one thing to garner from this new research, is that it is indeed possible to improve graphics through the cloud, it just might not be the most the efficient way to do things right now. But with the rate that technology increases, we could very well see the cloud become more efficient in the ten years that next-gen consoles are projected to stick around, and most certainly after that. While we might not see better graphics on Xbox One launch titles because of the Xbox Live Cloud, as technology gets better and more efficient it most certainly could happen in the future. For now, well have to keep an eye on how these researchers and developers continue to learn about using this technology. From the sounds of it, the Xbox One cloud might not be so much of a buzzword as it is ahead of its time by a few years.

lock if old.

Edit: watch the video. it absolutely proves the cloud is real.

As a PC gamer, THIS IS a gimmik.

Good luck to anyone with a normal internet connection.

You gonna need 10x the speed to not hit latency issues.

So those who cannot get a good internet connection because of area coverage should miss out?

Yes, I didn't feel sad for people that wanted a X1 but didn't have a Internet connection (pre DRM reversal). Why should we let people who live in a cave dictate the finer things gaming?

Should that hold back progress. Area's with bad or no connectivity need to be updated. Municipalities need to get individuals connected or at least give them an option to connect the internet. That is not technology companies responsibility.

Think about it. This is how technology works. Right now we are all about physical parts inside our computers and consoles. One day we will laugh at physical upgrades and snapping parts in. The cloud will just be the start of greater things to come. Right now if the cloud can just simulate light in a game, then other things will follow.

No no you have it all wrong. Sony purchased Gaikai for $350 million. MS just overhauled ONE of its server hubs for $700 million. It's the difference between a Chevy Cavalier and a Ferrarri F-40.

I doubt people are dismissing the "Cloud" for what it might be one day, they dismiss it due to what it is now, a huge factor in what it is now, is the average I-net connection.

Sorry to burst bubbles, supply and demand is the name of the game. MS tryied to push something farward, at that it is not all that earthshattering, atleast what has been described, yet the average consumer is howling due to the overall poor net-connection most people have. They DO dictate the industry, nothing anyone can do.

When that is said, what MS proposed takes a connection that not even a fraction of people have, and even with the processing power they have sofar, even latency in information travel plays a part people sem all too keen to dismiss. As of now what MS has claimed can be either dismissed, or simply explained as older less fantastic words, such as "Dedicated servers" and "cloud storage". A few attempts to push the tech farwards have been claimed, but as of now we have not seen it run in a practical everyday scenario, rather what we have seen is secured closed off tests, and proof of showing at best.

If those are what people are referring, I ask to direct attention to Online which DID work like it should, in a controlled envioment, but out there in the open, it failed.

So basicly this comes down to "weve seen this before, weve been promised this before, it did not hold up"

Microsoft revamped its server hub because of its overall cloud services like XBL, Office 365 etc. The price Sony bought Gaikai for doesn't include the amount of money they're investing in PSN. Gaikai is going to power PSN in general, not just cloud gaming. Not to mention GRID servers are actually more powerful than Azure servers for gaming related purposes. Microsoft servers are used for a billion different reasons. The fact stands; Sony will be capable of doing anything Microsoft does with the cloud. Sony could even use Amazon cloud services if they wanted to. The cloud isn't some sort of magical card Microsoft has in its hand.

[QUOTE="FoxbatAlpha"] Yes, I didn't feel sad for people that wanted a X1 but didn't have a Internet connection (pre DRM reversal). Why should we let people who live in a cave dictate the finer things gaming?Kjranu

Oh i see, so... a decision should always be correct because it is only appealing to a small amount of people... -____-"

As a PC gamer, THIS IS a gimmik.

Good luck to anyone with a normal internet connection.

You gonna need 10x the speed to not hit latency issues.

AMD655

What's the speed have to do with latency?

At a certain point, speed will over come latency due to raw speed.

Not any time soon mind.

yep, good majority of the world still has speeds of less then 10 mbps, going to take few years before this really starts taking off... you need massive internet connection speeds to have this work well

Latency is how long it takes for the info to go from one place to another. You're basically saying that you can get less ping if you increase your internet speed...

Yes, i am correct.

Once speed hits such a high speed, latency is negated, once the connection is there, latency will be fast over a longer distance due to rapid speed.

Common sense is all you need.

Should that hold back progress. Area's with bad or no connectivity need to be updated. Municipalities need to get individuals connected or at least give them an option to connect the internet. That is not technology companies responsibility.

GravityX

Or perhaps we should own and play the games locally on our own systems, without the need for streaming portions of games because it's profitable to corporations?

Latency will never be negated. A person getting a shitty image will get the same latency as a person getting a great image in the same spot. They aren't going to let people with slow enough speeds that they're going to be downloading the images too slowly - they'll just say it won't work.

This seems like a great way to use cloud computing because lighting you won't really notice if it lags a bit.

So sick of hearing the word "cloud". If I could eliminate one word from the English language, that would certainly be it right now...
