Ah yes, the sure signs that it has become trendy to hate Oblivion and Bethesda are strong in this thread. Coincidentally, also the signs that Bethesda and its games are really popular and aren't going anywhere.Shafftehr

Yeah, having an opinion nowadays is so over-rated.

With that out of the way, it's not a bad game.

Oblivion was absolutely horrible. It was the death of the series for me. What mostly killed it was the level scaling. Almost as bad as that was being dumbed down to be made to accomodate for the consoles. RIP Elder Scolls.

Playing Oblivion is like getting kicked in the balls, you forget how bad it is until it happens again.

So this thread inspires me to give Oblivion another chance, yay.

Ok so I like playing mages, the unarmoured skill has been rendered useless but maybe the spell enchantments mage gear has will make up for it? Oh yeah mage gear has no enchantment advantage over armour. Well maybe I can make my own custom high end mage gear... which is kind of hard since most clothing sets are incomplete or were merged, turning a full set into one enchantment slot. Well unarmoured may not have any perks; but the downsides to armour still give it an advantage, most of which disappear as you train the skills higher. In fact someone in the heaviest armour in the entire game can run as fast as someone wearing clothing at a certain skill level, plus it weighs less than clothing...

Ok... I will role play then! Who needs stats when you can have fun role playing a mage? Oh look a arena advert! It shows all major classes fighting in the arena, including a staff wielding robed mage, I think I'll go... what? Only people wearing armour are allowed in the arena? Right... ok Mage Guild then, if there is anywhere that will give me a mage role playing experience it will be the mage guild. Too bad my abilities as a mage are complete irrelevant within the guild, they even conveniently provide spell scrolls whenever magic is needed, so a none magic user can excel in the Mages Guild...

This game never ceases to crush every ounce of enjoyment I could have had, the whole freaking game is designed in the favour of jack of all trades classes; whose only interest is becoming head of every guild so they have another achievement for the pile. Actually want to role play one of the three major classes in a role playing game? Well **** you!

If anyone knows of any mods that make playing a mage more bearable please do share, I've actually completed the main quest and the Mage Guild as a mage but it is going to take a butt load of mods to make me play this trash again.

I have so many mods for Morrowind and Oblivion now that I honestly can't remember what in the game is from mods and what came with the basic package. It is really nice though having so much stuff in these games. I still find things to do.

I think someone added a sort of combo system for melee in a mod. That sounds like it'd be really fun.

I liked it as normal on the 360... I don't really understand peoples disdain for this game... it's what free roaming rpgs should be striving towards. Could it be better (like in these mods) yes, but very few developers even try now days.FragTycoon

Pray tell, how many free roaming RPGs have you even played? Oblivion happens to be one of the most simplistic and shallow sandbox RPGs out there. Oblivion is just a dumbed down version of Morrowind. Expanding on Daggerfall's style of gameplay should be the true goal of first person sandbox RPGs.
