Ok! OK! sorry. I thought Oblivion was phenomenal at first too, but once you play the game you see the various flaws, boring repetitive dungeons, and the level scaling. Its also pretty shallow and behind the great graphics there isn't much there. I admire the presentation of missions - makes them seem varied when they are pretty much identical in their premise (killing). I haven't played it in ages so I can't go into more detail.

oblivion is not even the former shadow of marrowind........it clearly wasnt even a challenge, while it does look alot better than marrowind.....it has too many glitches, bugs, and the gameplay gets boring after a while......i loved it at first, but it slowly got too repetitive for my taste.....

QFT. The only game I ever liked that Bethesda made was Redguard. Needless to say, when they took over the Fallout franchise, you can guess what I was thinking how they would effect a once good PRG series.

I had trouble enjoying Oblivion at first but the more i played it the more i enjoyed it, now i really love it.

It's one of those games you either love or you dont at all.

It's as much a rpg as any other rpg if not even more so in alot of aspects.

Oblivion is amazing, but it does get old it's true. Keep the word Shallow out of Oblivion, it's GTA 4 that deserves the Shallow Crown.

Yeah I really loved Oblivion and the reason is firstly because I'm pretty ignorant of rpg's since I hadn't played many, and I just treated it as a game, not anything that needs to confine to a genre, but just as a good and fun gaming experience. With that mindset I had a great time.

But GTA IV is an action game (or at least I think) whereas Oblivion is a RPG. For an action game GTA IV packs a lot of content and replay value, Oblivion has a pretty linear story BUT i still think its a great game.

Yes! Pretty graphics, lackluster gameplay with little to no rpg mechanics. Morrowind was actually a lot better than Oblivion imo.

Oblivion is a dumbed down version of The Elder Scrolls. I don't like TES in general, and still didn't like Oblivion. But I thought it was better because I had much less glitches than I did with Morrowind. Best game this generation for me is GTA IV. Spent the most time on, and had the most fun on it. :)

Bah, okay, ready?

Negatives:

-The main quest was one short cliche

-The weapons/armor made almost no difference, since enemies levelled with you

-The dungeons were almost all identical, some with a slight change in colour

-The steath bonuses were overpowered, meaning you could kill even the best enemy with a couple shots

-The good RPG aspects from Morrowind were removed

-The guilds made no sense, as you could be a bloodthirsty swordsman murder...who joins the mage guild

-There was absolutely no consiquence to your actions, especially with the theives guild there (not saying why that mattered, if you've played the game, you'll know)

-There was no character building, since your character was given no real identity, and you could join every guild, no matter what

-The voice acting was TERMINAL, people changed voices in mid-conversation depending on what you asked, the old beggar lady suddenly sounded like a bleedin blue blood princess if you asked certain questions, then went right back to old lady, this was annoying because it would happen in mission critical conversations quite often

-The difficulty level was a joke, if you figured out the way with each type of character, nothing could touch you

-The guild rewards for your 20+ hours of work were often just awful, one guild (not saying which), had a reward that made guards attack you ad-nausium...wunderbar

-Levelling and character growth was inconsiquential, it gave you no advantage, enemies levelled with you

-But if you didn't level, you'd face an onslaught of nothing but weak weak enemies...good times

Positives:

-Pick the wrong combination (like a fighting style as a main style) and you level all screwed up, and end up as a high level with weak stats, making the game *slightly* harder

-You actually have to do things to level them up

-Lots to do

-The dark brotherhood flat out rules

-The ending FMV, okay, not "the end" of the game, the end of the main quest's video is awesome, you'll see.

That is all.

So, those are my reasons why it's not the best game this generation.

I still find it odd the Bethesda managed to make such a bland RPG after Morrowind. I mean it did have alot of improvements gameplay wise. But they dumbed down and stripped out so much they did right with morrowind.

Morrow Wind put Oblivion to shame... I mean really, Oblivion was so limited in scope and the whole "everything adjusts to your level" crap made the game so pointless, it made leveling up so pointless. Redo Morrow Wind for current generation please.

Oh yea Oblivion was small as hell, like the size of my two bedroom apartment small.

I honestly find it odd that most of the negatives you listed (and not just you, but many people who claim to like Morrowind over Oblivion), were features from Daggerfall, which many ES fanboys tend to think of as the best game in the series. Just make Oblivion even more generic, and about 8000x larger, and you pretty much have an updated version of Daggerfall.

What role playing does it offer though? Since there is absolutely no need to specialise your character because they can do everything within the game world, coupled with the fact that there are no meaningful choices/consequences presented in the game and thus nothing you do affects the game world.

The Assassins guild was the best part of the game.

What he said - loved the game when measured as playing it a few years ago - did all side quest but I absolutely Hated never feeling really bad ass in the game b/c of the level scaling which really takes away a huge part of feeling godly after all the extra things done in the game to level up only makes the enemies harder as well - felt like a " catch up mode " in a racing game. :?

Fallout 3 had better not repeat this stupid stuff.

I don't think it's the best game of the generation, but you argumented your point very well. My favourite gameof tha generation is Gears of War, but agreed, it's too short.

Mario Galaxy was, for me, the only game I couldn't say "it's good but..." I simply loved it.

Even though Oblivion does have flaws, I can't simply throw it out as a bad game. Most of you probably fault it for not being like Morrowind, but it does improve some things (mostly the combat). Oblivion was a superb free roaming action/adventure, if not a good RPG. I spent hours of my life creating spells, and gathering items to enchant my armor to create the best character. Lved enemies don't even matter once you get 100 in destruction spells. I still agree mostly with the TC for this being one of the best games this gen.

I whole-heartedly agree. When Mass Effect came out, I was like "This is goin to be the one to supplant Oblivion", but it wasn't. Great game and all, just not nearly as rich and satisfying as Oblivion.

Sounds like someone didn't understand the RPG system. If you didn't like Oblivion, I blame YOU, not Bethesda. For example, I don't like melee combat, and as a result, I only used my bow (which I poisoned with alchemy). Oblivion let's you create the experience you want with more specificity than any other game I've ever played... if that's not role-playing, I don't know what is.

Mastered it ? WTH you talking about ?

There is no mastering it - it is what it is, a gimmick that prevents the player from achieving what we seek in a game; level up ( do more then required ) and become stronger then the enemy.

That does not happen in Oblivion since the enemy is always, no matter what, is made to be equal the player regardless of how much extra leveling the player does !

Like I said, feels just like a A.I. catch up mode in cheap racing games.

Not cool !

Lving up your skills did make you stronger. It wasn't so much lving up my character to become stronger than the enemy as it was improving your skills and acquiring the best enchanted equipment to become stronger than your enemies.

If you didn't like Oblivion, I blame YOU, not Bethesda.donalbane

I agree. The terribly written dialogue, repetitive side quests, lack of choices/consequences, copy/paste dungeons, awful Oblivion Gates, bland voice acting, psychic guards, "Radiant" AI, non-killable NPCs, lack of NPCs with personality, level scaling and complete disregard for logic are totally my fault.

EDIT: I'll probably be asked to elaborate on that, so I'll just chuck in the rpgcodex review

Oblivion is one of the best games out there and it is so far my favorite for this gen since I've spent the most time on it.
