sorta, kinda, but not really. Microsoft pretty much bankrolls them.

basically Bungie is now an independent company and not just a branch of microsoft. But Microsoft retains rights to Halo and future bungie projects.

Can "official" and "sorta" be used in the same sentense like this?

I think this is one of the more classy things MS have done in a long time. and it's perfectly in line with what I was predicting when everyone was tossing rumors around.

"This exciting evolution of our relationship with Microsoft will enable us to expand both creatively and organizationally in our mission to create world-class games," said Harold Ryan, studio head for Bungie. "We will continue to develop with our primary focus on Microsoft® platforms; we greatly value our mutually prosperous relationship with our publisher, Microsoft Game Studios; and we look forward to continuing that affiliation through 'Halo' and beyond."

Sounds like a win for both companies. Bungie can expand their portfolio...and MS platforms will probably continue to be their lead platforms.

This is good for both of them. Bungie can work on other stuff and not just focus on Halo, and Microsoft still has Halo, and probably all of Bungie's future games and IPs.

except that theyre not going to make games for other platforms. Microsoft is still getting their games unless they want to do something for the DS, which Microsoft would probably publish like Viva Pinata.

They have a roadmap. They'll probably be able to make more and different kinds of games...publish on other platforms. Maybe DS? PSP? Wii? Who knows. But with MS lining their pockets, I think it's fair to presume that for the forseeable future, Bungie games will be on MS platforms. They've said as much in this press release.

Never for a sony console. Microsoft will let ds games be made, but never anything for a sony console.

^^ I doubt that. It's more like, Microsoft will not let any other console or handheld have Bungie's game. We might see some of their games in different platforms, but for now, they are pretty much for Microsoft only.

They've been doing Halo for like a decade now.... ofcourse they would want to move on.... I know they'll come back to it after a while. It's their baby after all. They just need to not be doing Halo all the time and move on and they'll miss it again years from now and come back.

It needs a break. No more halo-universe games are needed until NextGen. The next game in that universe should be a launch title for the Xbox 720. Nothing until then.

I think this move will let Bungie become a bigger company. They can have a team working on Halo and others working on Different IP's. They could probably also make DS and PSP games to increase overall profits. This seems to be MS's new way of dealing with exclusive content, which seems to be working out for them.

totally agree, the x360 platform already has halo wars and the peter jackson game in the pipeline. I would like to see something new from Bungie and this seems to be the best direction.

From the press release it sounds like Microsft are going to milk the Halo IP for all its worth.

"a new interactive series set in the 'Halo' universe"

"through 'Halo'-related titles and new IP created by Bungie"

My guess is that relinquishing certain rights to the Halo IP was the leverage used by Bungie to become independant.

TC, I think this is a better article to understand the situation:

" As you have no doubt read on the web today, Microsoft Corp. and Bungie Studios, have reached an unprecedented and exciting agreement - starting immediately, Bungie will become an independent company and will retain a long-term publishing agreement with Microsoft Game Studios for "Halo" titles. The new structure became effective on Oct. 1, 2007. The official blurb follows, but since you're a valuable part of our community, we thought we'd sum it up simply and concisely.

Bungie has long been built on creativity, originality and the freedom to pursue ideas. Microsoft agreed, and rather than stifle our imagination, they decided it was in both our best interests to unleash it. We'll continue to make Xbox 360 games, and we'll continue to make amazing games for MGS. In that regard, nothing has changed. All that has changed is that now Bungie Studios is once again, the property of the folks of Bungie Studios. Microsoft is and will continue to be, a brilliant, inventive and creatively collaborative publishing partner. Practically speaking, nothing has changed and you guys won't see much, if any difference, for a while unless you come to work for us, that is - we're hiring at http://www.bungie.net/inside/jobs.aspx"

Let's hope those don't turn into anything playable until at least 2009. Maybe nextGen. Of course we'll see Halo Wars...but Bungie isn't making that.

keep dreaming.. the xbox 360 just made them the biggest pay day in media history, why would they mess around with creating games for other consoles when you cant even call the majority of the owners real gamers... again, what were the sales of MP3 vs halo on the wiis supposed larger install base? Bungie know where the money and the gamers are. If they decide to make halo party.. im sure it will be on wii though.

So Bungie can now develop other games besides halo to other consoles? Its says there independent now so...michael582

Back in the days of the old xbox and before Halo 2; I remember reading about a game Bungie was working on that was said to be set in medieval times but obviously something happened and the project was canceled.

Maybe now they can get back to it :)

Good, we get to see more creativity from Bungie. Microsoft maintains ownership of the Halo IP, and Bungie will still be making titles exclusively for Microsoft for the forseeable future.

The good thing that comes out of this is that gamers will be treated with more variety in both Halo games and in Bungie titles.

again... where are you getting this? Mircosoft has original publishing rights to all bungie games under the agreement. Meaning only in the event bungie created a game, that microsoft just wanted nothing to do with would it end up on another console... i.e. somthing that = crap.

Where do you see that? They said they are continuing their publishing agreement, meaning that Microsoft has agreed to still publish their games, doesn't say anything about Microsft having the rights to publish ALL their games.

"We will continue to develop with our primary focus on Microsoft® platforms"

If there is a primary focus then their is also a secondary focus, meaning they are looking at non-microsoft platforms (cell-phones is all I can think of that isn't another console). I'm sure they have all sorts of non-compete clauses, so I doubt there will be any Bungie FPS on Wii or PS3 anytime soon, but I wouldn't rule it out a couple of years down the line.

Microsoft is still publishing their games. Why would Microsoft publish their games on to another console?

Edit: You people have no idea what sort of contracts are made between Bungie and Microsoft. Microsoft essentially allowed Bungie to become what it is today. I doubt we'll see any Bungie game on either the Wii or PS3.

Well it affects anyone who doesn't own a 360 or gaming PC as Bungie can now produde games for their console. Pretty big news I would think.

Don't get cows or sheep hope up.

"We will continue to develop with our primary focus on Microsoft® platforms; we greatly value our mutually prosperous relationship with our publisher, Microsoft Game Studios; and we look forward to continuing that affiliation through 'Halo' and beyond."

PS: So much for the rumors about Bungie not wanting anything to do with Halo and thats why they were leaving.

Unless something drastic happens, Bungie will never produce for another console, the same way Insomniac will never produce for another console.

The most interesting thing about this to me is the guy that first leaked the news and how he was ridiculed and in the end was completely correct.

"What are they to say, NOW?"

I bet he is having a blast. No one can ever doubt him again.

basically means that bungie will continue making 360 games, but isn't forced to make just halo like M$ wanted them to initially

i'm glad that they can come up with more original games
