So who is benefiniting frm this?

real45

Both of them. Bungie has more freedom to develop games, while MS doesn't have to deal with the added red tape and paperwork of managing Bungie. This actually makes sense; Microsoft would've wanted to have a tight hold on Bungie while they capitalized on the core Halo series. Now that Halo is over and done with, and Bungie wants to experiment, Microsoft would naturally want to pull back its commitment to Bungie (i.e. reducing control but also reducing risk to MS) without losing the potential profits.

Pretty much everyone I'm guessing.

MS probably just got a whole heap of change from the deal.

Bungie now have much more creative freedom to develop gaes, plus they'll see a big increase in their percentage from games.

Gamers will see a much more diverse porfolio and probably more regular games from Bungie. Of course they will only be available on MS platforms (360 & PC)and possibly the DS as someone mentionned. Not much help for the cows though.

Good news for everybody. Bungie gets to maintain their creative freedom, and still make great games for MS, while MS doesn't have to worry about managing them anymore, and worry about having a disgruntled team.

Bungie has posted up their own comments following theoffical press release issued by Microsoft which stated that the company was to go solo. Bungie took the opportunity to reassure all fans that they will continue to make Xbox 350 games and make amazing games for Microsoft Game Studios so nothing has changed except that they will have more freedom to unleash their creativity.

quote:

As you have no doubt read on the web today, Microsoft Corp. and Bungie Studios, have reached an unprecedented and exciting agreement - starting immediately, Bungie will become an independent company and will retain a long-term publishing agreement with Microsoft Game Studios for "Halo" titles. The new structure became effective on Oct. 1, 2007. The official blurb follows, but since you're a valuable part of our community, we thought we'd sum it up simply and concisely.

Bungie has long been built on creativity, originality and the freedom to pursue ideas. Microsoft agreed, and rather than stifle our imagination, they decided it was in both our best interests to unleash it. We'll continue to make Xbox 360 games, and we'll continue to make amazing games for MGS. In that regard, nothing has changed. All that has changed is that now Bungie Studios is once again, the property of the folks of Bungie Studios. Microsoft is and will continue to be, a brilliant, inventive and creatively collaborative publishing partner. Practically speaking, nothing has changed and you guys won't see much, if any difference, for a while unless you come to work for us, that is - we're hiring at http://www.bungie.net/inside/jobs.aspx

Easy to explain. Bungie is to MS what Insomniac is to Sony. Any questions?DaysAirlines
Kinda but not really. Insomniac has the right to walk away from Sony while Bungie is legally bound to Microsoft.

Halo's not the problem.

It's those that were hired as writers for Halo 3.

As I said, Luke Smith....-sigh-

Halo is a damn fine IP. And I'm really worried Peter Jackson's going to see it's a diamond in the rough.

Microsoft's been making DS games since the DS came out. That's not really any kind of revelation, because MS has no interest in portable gaming. I'm talking about home consoles only.

Bungie has far has I know has not made any DS games...Also if all Bungie games come to the PC and I am not talking 2 years later like the Halo games then there will be less reason for my new customers to buy a 360...and heck who knows maybe we will see a Wii or PS3 game...But I expect more DS and PC games outside of the 360 then anything else

They also have ported most of their games to the PC which makes that one no big deal either.

That's great, there's nothing worse than having a publisher breathing down your neck with strict and sometimes irrational deadlines (like the famous Halo 2 one) and other limitations that restrict creative development. All in all, good for Bungie, I hope they now have the breathing room to create another game or franchise that rivals Halo CE in overall quality.

FASA did not leave M$ closed them down...Which makes me mad because I wanted a Crimson Skies 2 and maybe even more Mech Warrior

I would love to see Rare leave them and go back to Nintendo. I think it was a bad move for Rare to leave Nintendo for MS they would have made a lot more money on the Wii.

They are not allowed to make games for other consoles. Basicly the difference is that before MS could tell them what game too make and now they can't. If MS tells them to make Halo 4 they could say no but what ever they make will be on what ever MS allows it to be on.

It does not say that anywheres it says from Gamespot

Bungie will remain in its current location in Kirkland, Washington, and will retain its primary focus on Microsoft platforms. Harold Ryan, Bungie's studio head, commented, "This... will enable us to expand both creatively and organizationally." Ryan also stated that the studio would continue to work on Halo, and "beyond."

From MS presspass

"We will continue to develop with our primary focus on Microsoft® platforms; we greatly value our mutually prosperous relationship with our publisher, Microsoft Game Studios; and we look forward to continuing that affiliation through 'Halo' and beyond."

Again no wheres does it say only.....Not saying it will happen but sometimes with the Press one word is a huge thing

It's a control issue. MS owns them, they say "Do this" and if they don't, they can be fired. Now that is not on the plate.

Microsoft will retain an equity interest in Bungie, at the same time continuing its long-standing publishing agreement between Microsoft Game Studios and Bungie for the Microsoft-owned "Halo" intellectual property as well as other future properties developed by Bungie.

You really think Microsoft would have let them go without securing the rights to their games?

Bungie hasn't left Microsoft - they've just ended exclusivity with them.

Microsoft still owns a part of them and will make money off of their future projects no matter who they make games for.

No, Bungie now gets to make what ever they want. Microsoft can't tell them to make Halo 4 or whatever, the make what they wan't. They are still exclusive to Microsoft.

Bungie could really be a massive developer one day. Right now they are making about one game every 3 years but if they expand they could be as big as some of the developer gaints (Capcom, Konami, Namco ect) one day. Interesting times ahead.

Halo DS, its coming, Believe... :P

But really, what does this event actually mean? I can't really tell, i have read the story, but I don't fully understand what it is saying. Can Bungie now make whatever game they want for any console? Or are they still making games for the Xbox 360 only? Blah, guess we'll find out in a couple of days, i'll wait for the hotspot to break this down for me.

Read the interview is interessting

BIZ: How much does the financial aspect come into play with this move? I'd imagine that as the creators of Halo and as an independent studio, Bungie would be in a better position to negotiate contracts with Microsoft so that the games' success don't simply bankroll MS stockholders.

FO: It works out great for both parties. We get a slightly better deal, we get to loosen up and make the next big thing and Microsoft gets to publish more hopefully great Bungie stuff on Xbox 360.

BIZ: Is it possible that the Halo universe or Bungie's future games could appear on other consoles now?

FO: Right now we're concentrating on the Xbox 360. Which we adore.

I cant believe - no I can in the Halo Ad. & can believe that only on SW a few weeks ago, so many anti fans of Bungie; now salivate at a chance that they could dev. for their system of choice - priceless ! :D

PS: as I stated earlier in the thread; this is inside baseball so to speak & any future Bungie title is not independent but rather dependent on MS to publish - Yeah the report doesn't say explicit that but take it from me; that the fact Jack !

Let it go anti fans.

Bungie is not coming to a system near you but at least now many have seen the mask lifted, and see the fanboys for what they are - shallow! :?

So long as MS retains the rights to any future Bungie products, MS still wins. They just let Bungie do what they want now in terms of what they wish to make.

It is ironic that people want Bungie now (and that they can't read). They can falsely get their hopes up all they want. But too bad for them, MS still owns majority share which means that any Bungie title is likely to be MS published and a 360 exclusive.

Actually MS owns minority share in them. It was right there in the GS article. How much is still up for debate, but I'm guessing it is probably up in the high 40% area. If MS owned the majority, Bungie wouldn't be independent. The relationship doesn't sound like it is going to change much. MS is still their publisher and they retain first right of refusal, but Bungie gets more creative freedom and doesn't have to just do Halo any more.

If MS owned the majority, Bungie wouldn't be independent. The relationship doesn't sound like it is going to change much. MS is still their publisher and they retain first right of refusal, but Bungie gets more creative freedom and doesn't have to just do Halo any more.

So i had everything right but the Majority part...

Heh, semantics. My basic point was that MS and Bungie still have the publishing deal going so, essentially, all Bungie games (provided they have potential) will be published by MS and exclusive to MS. That's all i was pointing out. :)

MS knows and Bungie knows and the CONTRACT sighned is not available for viewing !

That is true, but even MS has said they now own a minority stake in Bungie. If MS still owned the majority, then we would have nothing to talk about. No one, besides MS and Bungie, will ever know how much stake MS now owns of Bungie, but my guess is as much as a minority holder can have which is probably 49%.

Yep. Nothing is changing except for the fact Bungie gets more creative freedom. That is it. Everything else stays the same.

So they're pretty much the Naughty Dog and Insomniac of Microsoft. Interesting.

Yeah fair enough but...

Two things; Minority stock holders ( especially at 49% ) can have great influence ( PAIN ) !

2nd - If Bungie were dealing with Sega is one thing but this is $$ MS $$ !

Plz do the math. ;)

Yea it seems like a good deal for MS. They get the exclusives and Bungie gets the creative freedom. Good deal.

MS also probably got a pretty penny for this deal, like in the hundreds of millions.

I agree. The people who are saying this is like Sony and SE are ignorant. Sony only owns about 15 to 20 percent of SE. MS will own nearly half of Bungie still. If anything you could compare this to the old Nintendo and Rare days.
