I'd like you to take a look as the second to last paragraph in your statement. That's what I was referring to. You essentially download your team to the servers, and compete that way. I admit it's not the true experience, cause you and your opponent will not be controlled by each other but you fight his A.I. and he fights you through A.I. but it's still random battles with other people, albeit not true to something ike Mario Kart races.yoshi_64

Still, make a very hard team, and it could be that the trainers will have a rough time trying to beat your team if they encounter them...

Actually how the friend code-less battles work is by players of the game to upload their team of 6 pokemon to the Nintendo servers. Then you are matched with another players team randomly. The other player team is not controlled by the player but by the AI. So in essence you aren't really battling another player just the team that player uses that will be controlled by AI. I think the reason they did this is beacue of Pokemon Battle Rev and the fact that you can battle against other random people in real time in that game and if they had it in D&P they probably felt no one would buy Battle Rev.
