"Eurogamer writes: "That title. I mean, really. Are they even trying to make sense, or do Japanese RPG developers just shove random English words together these days and hope for the best? Will next year see the release of a 60-hour epic called Melancholy Windsock Concerto? Decoding its semantic tangle, I can only surmise than an "infinite undiscovery" refers a long-winded and fruitless task that feels like it'll never end. And, funnily enough, that's almost the perfect description of this deeply flawed effort from Star Ocean creator tri-Ace.

According to the pre-release hullabaloo, the idea was to create a revolutionary game that would shake up the staid world of JRPG with its bold ideas. What we've ended up with is a game that wallows in the exact same narrative clichés as its peers, while its attempts to break out of the traditions of turn-based combat and linear progression are either non-existent or hopelessly fumbled."

Score 5/10:|

source.

it's nice to seem them complain about the name for 1/3 of the rewview  but they think final fantasy 13 is the best name ever right? personally I would've rated this game 8/10; it's so much better then what people say.

Just like WRPGs right? Except WRPGs are 100 times more shallow than before. (Oblivion/Fallout3/Mass Effect..) It actually has nothing to do with playing like they did 10 years. It's just a bad overall JRPG. If it was on par with the likes of FF7/8/9/Chrono Series.. The reviews scores would of sky rocketed.

Final Fantasy XII did that, and turned what had the potential to be a wonderful experience into something horribly boring IMO. Im happy for JRPGs to stay as they are, at least that way i know what im buying.

Rather a good non-jrpg than a dreadful jrpg.

I enjoy bad games wahoo :D

Only games that I have really enjoy that got 9.0+ have been Orange Box(because of Team Fortress 2) and Halo 3(multiplayer only, felt like I was forcing my waythrough campaign).

Lol you put Mass Effect in there...yeah right oh and haha you put two games from the same exact devs. How desperate to prove you a point. Anyway, he's right, JRPGs are the same ol same ol, just like anime.

Mass Effect is a good original game but it is however a poor RPG no matter which way you throw it.

Oblivion was awesome, Mass Effect was awesome, and Fallout 3 will likely be awesome.

When is the last time a AAA-quality JRPG was released?

The genre is getting stale, and it shows. Hopefully FFXIII turns the trend around.

Awesome? You are making me vomit. Oblivion is the worst RPG I have ever played. After you exit the first dungeon there's not much going for the game. It might as well be called "The Elder Scrolls: The Dark Brotherhood".

"You are making me vomit." Hahaha.

The dude above me really hit the nail on the head. Any game that is very highly rated and sells a bunch will be hated (like FF12.)

Oblivion was an excellent game, the vast majority of critics and consumers agree with me. I've been playing the ES series since Arena, and while I would've preffered the lack of a levelling system as it was in Oblivion and more vairedm environments (like those in Morrowind, Shivering Isles did it right though,) I loved it. "Worst RPG I ever played." Lol.

Oblivion has a leveling system that doesn't quite work well and a story which is beaten by the majority of sidequests, that in my book is one shallow RPG. At least Mass Effect had a decent storyline.

I'm talking about hate in System Wars.

If System Wars had existed during the time of SMB or SMW it would have most certainly got a huge amount of hate, it's the nature of fanboys. There has never been a game in this forum that was exempt from hate, there won't ever be.

A game will always receive flak no matter what, so if you are saying absolutely zero hate then that is impossible. However if you look at the majority then you will realize that the games I listed still stand true.

Like I said, if any of those games were released when System Wars was in full swing they would've got enormous amounts of hate from other fanboy factions.

And NiGHTS, even back in the day, wasn't very good.

The Orange Box has not recieved much hate on SW imo.

I know you can pick out threads. But ALL successful games get hate on SW, it's how much that matters.

The more platforms a game is on, the less hate it receives (because a fanboy is not likely to rag on a game on his "System of choice."

I've seen many threads hating on HL2 and TF2.

First thing that came up when I searched, took 2 seconds. You could find thousands of these types of threads.

The Orange Box has not recieved much hate on SW imo.

I know you can pick out threads. But ALL successful games get hate on SW, it's how much that matters.

That was his point

You know, the funny thing is, the title actually does make sense after a fashion. "Undiscovery" as in the breadth of what is undiscoevered and unknown (yes, it's not a word, but it's not unusual for video game titles to do this and we accept it - Soul Calibur, Mortal Kombat, etc)... And infinite describing the world around us as full of infinite unknown things.

I have no idea whether it makes sense in the context of the game, and I'm pretty sure this guy is dead on and that they did in fact just slap random words together as RPG creators are wont to do (though, some of the more idiotic sounding ones - like Final Fantasy - actually do mean something quite particular in the context of the situation of the people who first came up with the name). Any which way, this game sucks. But the name... Not as idiotic a name as Soul Calibur in my eyes. At least this one *might* mean something.

I freaking told all of you many times this game wouldn't deliver. Tri-Ace just doesn't have it anymore, PERIOD.

Anyone hyping SO4 is simply digging their graves.

ehm, no. the problem is that everybody compares every jrpg with a multi-million-budget series (FF). if people stopped that they wouldn't get dissapointed.

I never get why so many posters consider JRPGs stale when FPSes haven't changed significantly since mouse look was introduced.

Eternal Sonata and TS are proof that not every jrpg game is compared to FF.

That's like saying it's up to Halo to save FPS's... The RPG genre has lots of good games - western and eastern - to have to rely on the equivalent of a Hollywood summer action flick to save it. Both of those games are made to pander to the masses in the most generic, cliched, and saleable ways manageable. Doesn't mean they are bad games, but boy, they aren't saving anything - they're a symptom of gaming's slow march to mass-market swill. They themselves aren't there yet by any stretch at least.
