allow me to illustrate. while playing a game a L.O. on the 360 i came to a point where i had to swap a disk. now i counted, and the whole disk swapping time took approx 20-30 sec, counting time for the disc to load up. disc swapping instances are few and far inbetween and i can tolerate them because i know before hand that its going to come although at what point im not entirely certain.

i just bought a new PS3 game the other day and although i havent turned on my PS3 in about a solid month, give or take a few days, i turn the thing on and so i can tell my buddies about my purchase i have to sign in..........im hit with an unexpected 45 minute update. this comes right on the heels of my having to take care of some business. so instead of jumping into a quick gaming session i had to put my ps3 on auto shutoff and play the game at a later date.

PS3 -1

360 +1

what do u guys say??

The only thing that really bothered me is the 30 min it took me to install disc 2 of FF Type 0.

It's not about the disk swapping it's about how the 360 with it's DVD and lack of harddrive have limited this generation.

Seriously? There is one update for PS3 every few months... that's a non-issue. And what internet connection do you have? 56k? My downloads are very fast. If you play a lot on your Xbox 360, you have to swap your discs several times a day. I honestly don't think it's that much of a problem, but I would rate this more annoying than PS3 updating...

I'm a hater of the Playstation 3 updating system. I really hate it. Consoles are suppose to be insert and play devices, no? Kind of dumb when the consoles takes 3 times longer to update so often then my PC does, the very few times it does.

You sound like you have to update your PS3 on a daily or weekly basis, and that these updates are incredibly big. That's simply not the case. Way to blow something out of proportion.

SOL = so out of luck?

and, unless your just playing one game constantly, you probably would have lost the disc anyway. with two discs, you can still play one half of the game if you lose the other disc :P

What I find amusing about this thread is that there are still a LOT of people that complain about the PC because you have to install the games.

Honestly, if people can tolerate one, the other is completely tolerable. The only thing I can think of is disc swapping creates some unessary opportunities to get your DVD's scratched.

If spending 20-30 seconds to swap your disc is no hassle then I can't see why you don't turn your ps3 on every now and then when you aren't using it so it can update. Takes about the same amount of time and then you can just leave it to it. I personally have never experienced a 45 minute update and don't mind them. Start it, go to the kitchen to get something to eat, come back and it's done.

True, hadn't thought of that. I thought TC meant more of installing a full game on the PS3.

No offense to xbox or anything, but this is 2011, not 1997 anymore. 360 updates are indeed faster though, but not all PS3 updates are bad. Some of them only take like 5 or 10 minutes, but yeah I do see your point because I played PS3 games where the updates took FOREVER!

Pretty much this.

Stretching your arm to swap disc is nothing and doing something else while there's an installation is simple.

i wouldnt really call it nitpicking. when im ready to play a game dangit im ready to play a game. not turn the thing on wait for almost an hour to MAYBE play the game and by then have something else entirely take precedence. almost any ps3 owner can say that theyve been in a similar situation...

ok how many times on the 360 do you swap a disk? unless your entire collection is made up of multi disk games i would say thats beyond comparison. also as its a known fact anyone call tell you that the ps3 does not update very fast no matter the connection speed. and for the record my speed is pretty dang fast...

In that case it's not an apt comparison. Compare PS3 update times to 360 update times, not disc swapping.

But yes, I see where you are coming from. I generally ignore the updates if I can.

Gamers are extremely spoiled these days...If I had to swap 30 disks while playing great game 10 years ago I would do it in matter of seconds, with smile on my face. If I had to update system so I can get things to work faster/better I would gladly do it. Whining about those things is stupid IMO.

Thats a fanboy statement. I have road runner broadband extreme and I can say the updates on the ps3 are still long and annoying, especially if you havent played it in awhile like the TC stated. Second of all, how many games are more than 1 disc anyways??? Only a few that I know of. That's a lot less annoying than the ps3 updates.

360 updates are always miles quicker than PS3 updates. Add on the fact that PS3 downloads an update and THEN installs, whereas the 360 seems to so both at the same time (same with demos, xbl trials etc). I think this is probably down to MS's 20+ years experience with PC development.

I agree to a large extent. Some games like GT5 take forever to update. Updates for 360 games are lightning fast in comparison. Then you have to install them *sigh*. I hope Sony resolves the software side of things with the PS4.

considering how many people started playing on consoles probably during the 80 and 90's weve all had to experience disc swapping at some point and i dont consider it that much of an inconvenience. its the same as tolerating the care and maintenence of pc rigs, or ps3 updates. each has its downside that each "side" sees as minor vs major...

I agree, I hate the POS3, I have had one since launch, the updates are annoying and take a hell of alot longer then the xbox updates, and you cannot install all of the ps3 games leading to long load times. I personally think it is overrated garbage. Would have sold it already if it wasnt my bluray player. I also think most of the exclusives have been overrated, I have enjoyed my 360 alot more this gen and it think it has 10 times the play time, ps3 usually gets the inferior version of Multiplait games etc.... it really is a joke for supposedly being the more powerful console.

my mama always said, stupid is as stupid does. i dont mind swaping discs....i know why im doing it and i understand the situation at hand. on the other hand, why am i waiting for almost an hour to play my game while the system updates. certainly it isnt so that it can work better since it was fine to begin with. its not like a game update where we have to sit through an update to fix bug issues AND before the update i didnt read ANYWHERE of what this update contained or was correcting.....or adding for that matter......... all of this wait time is not including install time might i add, just downloading. :\ some things are acceptable and some things are not. and i disagree, its not a matter of being spoiled....ive grown up with some of the worst issues in gaming. ive witnessed the fall of gaming after the atari era and the rise of nintendo, blown on nintendo catriges, had rickety 3rd party controllers, extremely short lived consoles you name it. but as technology advances so does our expectations....

You do realize that the effective speed of a download depends on various factors, not only on the theoretical speed of your connection? Server performance, routing, settings of your network hardware... Maybe speed is a problem in your region, with your isp and the servers you get routed to. I live in Germany (100Mbit/s) and have no issues, speed is fine and to repeat myself, nowhere near the 45min mark.

I don't mind disc swapping. In fact, it can be exercise if you have to walk to the 360 to change the disc. The PSN updates are way too annoying and long, plus the bonus "installing" that comes after the downloading.

As long as you put your discs back in the case you can bet the disc will be safe. On disc swapping. I for one have never had a problem with disc swapping as it takes..what 5 seconds? The truth is it's what fanboys use to bash the other platform and find a weakness to harp on about.

the ps3 has always been inconvenient if you are in a hurry.

it seems like everytime i hang out with a friend and they rent a game it is a huge hassle to get it going.

it is always a 20 min 5 gig mandatory install or a 10 min update or a patch or something.

now the moment i get to my buddys house the first thing i say is put in whatever you rented because if we don't we are going to be sitting around when we finally get around to seeing whatever it is you picked up from blockbuster.

it's not a huge dealbreaker or anything but it is annoying and it affects me all the time.

it is literally a running joke where we make fun of it everytime i go over to his house.

disc swapping happens once in a blue moon, the ps3 being slow and clunky is almost every freaking game.

Neither are that bothersome. I do wonder why it takes the PS3 much longer to update than the 360? Either way, if updating is making the experience better, by fixing bug, glitches, etc., then I'll gladly wait .

seriously i do not belive you. no matter the region...THE PS3 JUST DOESNT UPDATE FAST AT ALL. it has nothing to do with dl speeds or isp traffic, server location etc. (even though to some degree im sure it plays a minute part in the situation) every, EVERY other device updates faster than the ps3......even the wii.

i just bought a new PS3 game the other day and although i havent turned on my PS3 in about a solid month, give or take a few days, i turn the thing on and so i can tell my buddies about my purchase i have to sign in..........im hit with an unexpected 45 minute update. this comes right on the heels of my having to take care of some business. so instead of jumping into a quick gaming session i had to put my ps3 on auto shutoff and play the game at a later date.

PS3 -1

360 +1

what do u guys say??

45 minutes update are you on 256Kb.? It takes like 5 or 6 minutes on my connection and is 5 MB.

i can assure you that my connection is much MUCH faster than yours so no, thats not the issue. i seriously wonder how you all claim that these updates last only a couple minutes....i mean sure ive had a few that were like maybe a few to 10 minutes but if you are saying that you have never witnessed an extreme update on the PS3 than i seriously doubt that youre telling the truth.

Quite easy next time you update, record it with a timer so we can all see how it takes 45 minutes on your connection,i will do the same and we can compare. I did get low update speed back in 2007,but now that is a thing of the past,my PS3 download things as fast as my PC does, but files speed depend on what you are downloading, don't compare Mega Man on wii which was 19MB vs a COD update which is more than 1GB long, like one dude did on another thread.
