Ive been noticing something on here a lot lately. A lot of people are saying that MGS4 will not move consoles and will not sell well and MGS was never a system seller but yet those same people are hyping Ninja Gaiden 2 as the second coming and claming that Ninja Gaiden 2 will move systems.. Ummm yea, that makes perfect sense. Please explain something to me.. If MGS4 is not a system seller then how is Ninja Gaiden 2.. MGS4 will sell more copies on its first day then Ninja Gaiden 2 will in the first month! Quote me on it.. If MGS4 is not a system seller and doesnt appeal to casuals, what does that make Ninja Gaiden 2?! Ninja Gaiden has NEVER been a system seller and I bet anything that casuals know more about MGS4 then they do about Ninja Gaiden 2..

In a way MGS is a household name for video games. Like Halo or Grand Theft Auto, MGS is also a househould name for video games and it will move a lot of consoles! Ninja Gaiden 2 might sell ok to those that own a 360 but if your expecting people that dont own a 360 already to buy a 360 for ninja gaiden 2... Well you have another thing coming

NG2 will not be a system seller.. BUT it will move alot more units than the previous titles on the XB/PS3 and you can quote me on that..

Also MGS is not a "household" name with games such as Halo and Mario. It will sell a few million but don't expect it to push 10 mil or anything..

People underestimate the name of MGS.. When I go to my local gamestop and just have casual conversation with customers in there, when the PS3 topic comes up, most people's response is something like "I might not want a PS3 now but when that Metal Gear solid comes out you can bet im getting one" noone WILL BUY a 360 for ninja gaiden, the game itself my sell ok to those that already own a 360 but if your thinking it will move consoles to those that dont own a 360 well.. think again.. Because MGS4 will move more consoles than Ninja Gaiden 2 will

NG2 is not a system seller. NG is not a franchise that people see and say...OH I WANT THAT CONSOLE NOW, well it onlyis for a small minority. NG is a game for gamers, who have their consoles etc. Halo 3 is a system seller, look at the marketing and hype. The same is true for MGS as NG.

MGS4 is a system seller, but you cows out there that were silly enough to put MGS4 up with WoW:WOTLK / GTA 4 & Starcraft on first day sales "over a million" were crazy

I mean, MGS games? 6 millionish each right? on an 120 mill install base ... PS3 is 6 million install base .... so how on earth do you expect this to sell as near as much as the fore-mentioned games?

MGS2 probably the most popular game in the series sold 2.3 million units in the U.S (check the-maigcbox.com). It most likely sold a mil or so in Japan so i'll give it 3.5-4 mil total. Halo sold 5+ million in the U.S. Halo 2 sold 6+ Million in the U.S (same site) And I won't even get into mario. So please explain to me again how MGS is a "household name"..

You're right Chris, MGS4 is more of a system seller than Ninja Gaiden. I never even heard of it until I tried the demo for Sigma. And even after the demo, I thought it was crap.

I'ver never said that and I'm aware that MGS4 will sell better; however, Ninja Gaiden 2 will defienetly be the better game to me, and Ninja Gaiden 2 will most likely sell better than its predecesors.

Metal Gear Solid 2 sold about 7 million according to wikipedia, just under Halo 2 sales-wise (8 million). I'll concede that it isn't as popular as it once was, but I would still consider it household name and system seller.

It's a bit more logical to hype Ninja Gaiden over GotP, but the difficulty of the series will probably scare away newcomers. I've already stated NUMEROUS TIMES why MGS4 won't be a system seller and isn't a household name (which, I admit, is a new thing I've heard applied to it).

To be honest, I never heard anyond say NG or NG 2 were system sellers. especially after NG sold poorly on the Xbox...What I have heard is that NG is better than DMC, which I agree with totally.

MGS 1 & 2 both sold around 5.6 million copies World Wide.

MGS 3 sold around 4 million World Wide with a huge installed base.

yeah. It is pretty pointless. As I said earlier, I've heard other things about NG, but I've never heard it being tagged as a system seller. And it certainly isn't a widespread notion. I think this is one of those threads where

A. The TC is full of it

or

B. The TC saw one thread about it and decided that everybody thought this way.

It's the classic straw man argument.

IMO...I think a video game has to be a Casual and Hardcore game at the same time in order to be a system seller.

Halo 3 is aimed at casuals but also appeals to hardcore gamers

The sale numbers of both games lead me to say no for both.

But you cannot argue that Ninja Gaiden 2 teamed up with the rest of the 360's already high-in-quality lineup doesn't have a mighty positive appeal to it. People do complain that the 360's biggest titles are shooters, after all.

Neither of those games are, they are for the hardcore. The only true system sellers in my opinion are Halo, Mario, GTA, GT, and Zelda.

Well I d say thats difficult to define are the GTAs system sellers I mean sure people will definatlely pick up consoles the day GTA 4 is released but think about last gen each GTA sold about 15 million copies per game on the PS2 well thats great but that means that at least a 100 million PS2 owners didnt pick up a copy as well. So i would agrue that no game a syetem seller by itself

Anyway I digress will MGS4 sell consoles? I think so. If it doent go mutliplatform then I personally definately willhave to pick up a PS3 at some point. However I personally dont think its in the primer league so to speak. Its defintely not up there with the GTAs, Halos, Final Fantasys and Gran Turismos of this world

Ninja Gaiden 2 definately not based on previous sales as far as I am aware no edition of it has sold over a million copies. So might make some people pick up a 360 here and there but I d definately say that most people who want ninja gaiden 2 have already got a 360

neither is a system seller. sure they might cause a few more units to shift but nothing spectacular.

if ure looking for system sellers then heres a few examples.

halo 1 (said to have sold a million xboxes all by itself)

wii sports

gran turismo

grand theft auto

pokemon

these are games that appeal to big demographics in the market. the actual quality of the title has little to do with its system seller status (which is unfortunate). MGS, in comparison, does not appeal to a huge market and thus is not a system seller. im sure itll be a great game though (doesent have to sell systems to be great, many greats dont sell systems and sometimes sell badly themselves though MGS wont suffer from that problem).

They're not even comparable franchises, in terms of sales.

NG struggles to break a million, whereas the debut MGS on every Playstation platform sells 6 million+.

Yes, MGS3 was an exception, but it still sold 4 million.

A game doesn't have to appeal to a mass market to be a system seller.

It just has to appeal to a huge fan base.

I don't have a bad thing to say about NG, especially after buying all 3 versions of it already.

I will say I don't expect 360 to change it's current performance in Japan because of the release of NG 2.

MGS USE to be a system seller... Some how after MGS2, the series lost steam(sales wise). It's still a popular game series and I'm sure there are plenty of people who still buy systems for MGS. But none of the MGS games have gotten' near the power MGS2 and 1 did. 2 sold over 7 mill. 3 only sold over 3 mill. And I'm sure most of those 3 mill already had MGS2. Did you see sales go up on the PSP when MGS PO came out? Did sales go up on Gamecubes when the Twin Snakes came out?

Now Im not saying MGS is bad(its among my three favorite game series actually), but the series has lost steam. And the fact that 4 will be a PS3 exclusive isn't helping it. Im sure it'll sell a decent amount, but not enough to call it an actual system seller. And I can garentee you it's not going to sell th 1 mill on day one that Konami needs it to.

But as for the Ninja Gaiden argument, your right about that. Ninja Gaiden is not a system seller. Maybe in Japan it helped, but internationally, it really makes no difference. It sells well, but it has made no impact on the X-box other than being a good, well selling game. But MGS stomps it sales wise.

[QUOTE="King_of_Sorrow"]System War really need to define what isa system seller. I think we should vote to determine what is a system seller? Personally, I think both MGS and NG are system sellers.JiveT

I offered mine a long time ago.

System Wars just has short-term memory.

Yeah but I destroyed your argument and that was just about MGS not what defines a system seller.

 please.

The series lost its steam?

By selling 4 million copies of MGS3 and by getting 14 million hits on the MGS4 page on gametrailers?

Let's assume these numbers are true.

No Sony fanboy has yet to be able to explain why 1.5 million people who bought MGS2 said "no thanks" to MGS3.

Yellow_Rose

Simple.

MGS3 came out late in the PS2's life cycle, and therefore was no longer a graphical showcase for the system. The debut footage of MGS3 garnered nowhere near the amount of hype that MGS1, MGS2, and MGS4's debuts garnered.

Furthermore, MGS3 had archaic and complex control design, which turned off a lot of potential consumers (the same way NG's difficulty turned off potential buyers).

MGS4 remedies these two issues by: 1) being a graphical showcase for the PS3; and 2) making the control scheme more user-friendly for a broader audience.

If MGS4 wasn't a system seller then it would not have constant rumours surrounding it which are created by fan-boys.

MGS4 is the most anticipated game for PS3 and the most anticipated exclusive of 08. Now NG2 is a great game but like the previous NG games it will not be a system seller considering the previous NG games failed to sell ove a million. Also consider the fact that the highest selling games on the 360 are mostly all shooters.

So what it sounds like you're saying is that people hated MGS2 so much, that they wouldn't give MGS3 a chance, right?

Because the only way your argument has validity is if GTA:VC didn't sell better than GTA3, and GTA:SA didn't sell better than VC.

Needless to say they weren't graphical showcases.

You're right Chris, MGS4 is more of a system seller than Ninja Gaiden. I never even heard of it until I tried the demo for Sigma. And even after the demo, I thought it was crap.AIH_PSP
