fact is....theywere the causeone of my fav consoles stop died before its time. (sega dreamcast)

it took a lot for me to buy a ps2. my friend got one and then i tried some of his games and after a few more months of trying to get through my betraying feelings for sega i finally broke down and bought a ps2. but i do stil have my original dreamcast though.

Focus on the present, and not on the past. Only will one find nirvana in System Wars.

People really need to get over the Dreamcast dying. It was more Sega's fault that it died. Are yall seriously going to be mad at Sony for selling their product better than Sega?

I really don't like the dreamcast only because people wasted their precious money on a console only to survive two years before no new games were produced.

You hate the Dreamcast because nobody had a crystal ball to tell them the console would die in 2 years?

The Dreamcasts games were better than everything last gen, the system was the best. I don't think many people knew about the console just like everything else Sega made besides the Genesis.

The Dreamcast was Sega's love letter to video gamers. It truly was, and Sega was not thanked for it.

 Not it wasn't the best. It is so overrated. It was a good system with good games but the PS2 destroyed it. It has better games, better hardware. It was better in aevery way. Also this was last gen. Care about this gen.

I also liked the Dreamcast, but feel no bitter feelings toward Sony for its death. I do remember being a little aggravated with people for not giving it a proper chance, though.

they stopped making consoles because sony included the dvd player in their console whereas sega did not. back in that time dvd players werent that big in japan so having a gaming console plus a dvd player sold it in japan wich ultimatly meant the demise of the system since it wasnt as popular in america. sega had already spent tons of money on the consoles wich were at first sellign like hotcakes then all of a sudden........nothing. and in any industry nothing=death. so like i said...selling their console wasnt the problem they were selling like crazy but...they couldnt compete with the inclusion of the dvd player. its strange....but sony always seems to get a leg up on the competition because of something OTHER that what has to do with gaming. (well i guess to a certain degree it does, but still)

Because the dreamcast library was better right? Oh wait, no it was killed before it was given a chance to shine and all of its best games were ported, including Code Veronica to PS2.

Because the hardware was superior right? Oh wait, no the PS2 was more powerful and could play DVDs.

Wait....

Your blaming Sony because the Dreamcast died early?

The Dreamcast died because Sega launched it while they were in the red and all the idiotic decisions during the Saturn era and all the Genesis add-ons (CD, 32X, etc). Its hardly Sony's fault.

well hell of course the playstation was more powerful it had a chance to evaluate the dreamcast and come out with something better since it came out at a later date. MY point was sega had MUCH more creativity than sony wich meant BETTER GAMES. and thats what its all about right? and if the dreamcast actually had a 10 year lifespan like sony im sure the playstation wouldnt have done NEARLY as good as it did last gen. and to be honest what average american family didnt already have at least one dvd player in the house? so who really benefitted from that? aside from the kids that didnt have on in their own personal rooms

How was sega more creative than sony?

*blinks*

Sony has produced a lot of highly creative games, especially in the PS2 era.

To be honest, I'd rather see Sega still alive rather than microsoft, but you can't blame the PS2 for being competent competition. It was sega's fault that they lost. Cutting the saturn short and producing the Dreamcast early was a huge mistake.

Oh, btw the PS2 was my family's first DVD player.

Okay, I take that back. I should have phrased it more accurately.

The Dreamcast's first two years were great but it wasn't given a chance to build up to a point where its a library that's worth buying the system again for if you don't already own PS2 and gamecube. I bought the dreamcast to play some obscure survival horror games ... and honestly, I consider buying the system a mistake.

That was one of the mistakes they made was releasing it early, but even I never even knew the Dreamcast existed for a year or so after it launched. Maybe someone brought it up every now and again. I actually didn't even know the Saturn existed until maybe 2002-2003? Or even Sega's handheld the Nomad.

I don't remember seeing a single advertisement for Sega's stuff.

I too would prefer if Sega was in the console business over Microsoft though. The Dreamcast did everything right for me as a gamer. Great games, awesome controller, upped the graphics from the previous gen. It was a masterpiece imo.

were talking abotu redzones this and sales that. true sega did make some marketing blunders during the sega saturn age wich i still have that too. still a good console and the 32x and sega cd and saturn werent as popular as they should have been...well to be honest the only ones i supported was the genesis, saturn, and dreamcast personaly. but the only creativitty i see in sony is adding the "video" to the gaming. (i.e. dvd last gen and blu ray this gen) and thats where it stops. sega had online gaming before sony execs were competent of how to evne pull it off. online chat through keyboard (console) peripheral true 3d gaming the list goes on

It's Sega's own fault that their console died off. Just like it's Sony's fault that the PS3 is slowly doing the same.

segas fault for making crappy peripherals...32x and sega cd. (well the latter was actually its own console) but whenn they actually did turn out and do something good for the gaming world...sony changes it up by simply adding the dvd player to the mix. someone please explain it to me still as to why sonys only leg up this gen and last was adding video players to its console instead of doing something truely creative with their console. and it turned into a creativity thread when sega was called out for making wacksauce software. a lot of it was...but then a ton of it wasnt.....an dyes sega did fail the saturn with no marketing at all. in fact its an even sadder story of how the saturn went....

You're wrong.

Sony knew that if they were going to compete with nintendo they had to do something different, so they decided to push the market from one that was regardedly largely as children's toy to one that was targeted towards young adults - the "19" campaign.

Sony's playstation was also the first console to do true 3D. The reason why the sega console was so strange at the time was because in response to sony's 3D console, sega overpowered their saturn so it could handle 3D to some extent (albeit poorly) overcomplicating the structure and making it very expensive.

In fact, its funny that you mention "video" to gaming because if you look at the Japanese library thats largely what the saturn set out to do, rather than the Playstation, because it wasn't as good at 3D.

Sony also pioneered the handle style controller that future systems mimicked just like playstation and saturn mimicked the snes button arrangement to some extent. It's controller was 3D in comparison with Saturn's archaic flat pad design.

Sony has also a long history of highly creative games on the PS2, such as Ico, Rule of Rose, Siren, and Shadow of the Collossus.

You can't blame Sony for adding a format to their console because they aren't only in video games unlike Sega. Dreamcast did everything right but you can't fully blame Sony for Sega's fall. A lot of it came from past mistakes Sega made that happened to catch up to them at that time.

I wish they were still here as well:(

i dont know where i should begin to dismember your arguement so ill just start where it seems to fit. sega already had the audience that was more "mature" than nintendo so no sony did not originate that idea, they capitalized off of it sure. but originat.....far from it. if you want to name titles i can but we'd be going all night with this back and forth thing. segas console has always been geared towards the more adult crowd over nintendo. and no sony was NOT the first console to do true 3d...if im correct sega did have the first 3d game on a console by creating the "virtua games"go back if you cant remember the times....and no sega did not intendo to do anything "video" with gaming. sega concentrated on making a console and pushing it to the know limits by adding and doing the most with the tech that was in their hands and to be quite honest for that time, yes they did do a much better time than sony. the fact is sony had a much longer time to "perfect their technique" than sega. and no sony did not pioneer the forst handle style controller take a look at the first gen saturn controler, is when handles were starting to be found to be more confort. then came the dreamcast wich had a controller soley contoured to the form of your hand. (unless you had little sissy girly hands because it was big) ill give you the fact that sony does have some creative minds behind their games now...and after the saturn died they started with creativity. ico didnt come about until 4 years after the ps2s launch though. but seaman....if anyone remembers that game was creative too...of course there was others but like i said we could go back and forth on that issue all night

Sega didn't actively seek a more mature audience, they simply tolerated violence and sex more liberally than nintendo (the later in Japan).

I'm not saying that sony did the first 3D, i'm saying PS1 was the first console intended for 3D gaming. Saturn was not.

Did much better than sony? The sega saturn was a complete mess. It had two hitachi processors in an attempt to make it more powerful, but they didn't cooperate well and it was extremely difficult to program for. Learn your history please.

Sony had a lot longer to perfect their technique? Sega had been in the industry for quite some time, while Sony simply was left on their own after being abandoned by nintendo. The two systems were released a month apart (Japan).

There were no handles on the first gen saturn controller, i own one. It's a curved shaped pad. The dreamcast followed in the footsteps of the PS1 controller, which also fit in your hand. Both are very comfortable, although the Dreamcast one was excessively large in order to accomodate the vmu.

Yes, I know what seaman is.

I want to note that I do appreciate sega and actually enjoy the sega saturn very much. But I'm not blind to the reality of the situation.

People really need to get over the Dreamcast dying. It was more Sega's fault that it died. Are yall seriously going to be mad at Sony for selling their product better than Sega?

Ragnarok1051

i think people are more mad about sony's tactics to beat the dreamcast. their lie after lie before the PS2 was released and telling consumers to wait for the PS2 because it had 1 million pixel capabilities i think they stated? something absurd like that. I doubt people would mind if sony was "fair" about beating the dreamcast. you can't deny this.

I hate sony (the company), their business practices are deplorable, the fact that they never fix any of their mistakes without lolsuits first is sickening, they put out the most annoyingly conceited press releases, and overall they do a lot of harm to many different technological industrys....

With that said, I love my PS3 :)

[QUOTE="Justinge3"]I really don't like the dreamcast only because people wasted their precious money on a console only to survive two years before no new games were produced.treedoor

It truly was, and Sega was not thanked for it.

you must be dreaming...

fact is....theywere the causeone of my fav consoles stop died before its time. (sega dreamcast)

it took a lot for me to buy a ps2. my friend got one and then i tried some of his games and after a few more months of trying to get through my betraying feelings for sega i finally broke down and bought a ps2. but i do stil have my original dreamcast though.

slvrraven9

What?

Ok 1, Its not sony fault the DC got snuffed, its sega's. Sony just won fair and square, they didnt touch sega, it was the consumers who killed the DC, they liked the PS2 better.

And to those who think DC was better than the PS2...the PS2 had better games, more games, better hardware and...better everything...

Sounds like you should be angry at Sega, they were too inept to compete.

Sega knew the Dreamcast was doomed before they released it. They were in a horrible financial situation thanks to their insane Atari-esque experimentaton with hardware in the mid 90's. Despite this they invested a hell of a lot of money in games like Shenmue (80 million, I believe). Infact, they spent so much money on it, the only way they could make money from it was if EVERY Dreamcast owner bought the game TWICE. That right there is the insanity of Sega.

However, I do agree that Sony didn't play a fair game. They promised things they would never be able to deliver (toy story quality graphics etc) but by doing that they simply hastened the inevitable.
