[QUOTE="OhhSnap50893"]HD DVD is dead? lol. You're reliable.fuzzysquash

New York Times: "The high-definition DVD war is all but over." source

I may be misunderstanding the quote but wouldn't that mean the format war ISN'T over?

"All but" means "for all intents and purposes."

So yes, the format is war is technically still continuing. I went to Best Buy today and the HD DVD section was still there. But that section won't last through the end of the year.

Oh ok. I haven't watched a blu ray movie yet so i can't comment on the quality jump from HD-DVD. Although i can say this. Sony is a smart company, and i would honestly doubt they would piss away TONS of money into something that they didn't think was a smart move. Even if bluray fails, im sure they have a back up plan, like all companies.

Doesn't matter to me much, for i have only a Wii. Just give me SSBB already and ill be happy.

[QUOTE="ChristopherM81"]

I think sony is really on the verge to making one of the biggest and fastest comebacks in video game history.. I mean WOW, i still cant get over this news. For the last year critics and media have been saying that sony needs to win the format war or else and BAM, Just 4 days into 2008 and sony manages to make history by winning the format war in just one day! Now that the format war is over sony will now move on to plan B. Make great games and win back the gaming war that belongs to them..

there are times i had my doubts about the PS3 even though ive always been a hardcore PS3 fan but I honestly think we are about to witness a comeback of epic proportions. You may think that sony winning the format war has nothing to do with gaming but i say it does.. More people now will be more inclined to buy the PS3, you have to think that Devs are now starting to second guess, thinking the PS3 is here to stay and blu ray is needed afterall.. Sony has put MS in one of the hardest positions.. A. either MS creates a format of their own for the next xbox much like the Dreamcast did with GD-roms. or B.swallow that pride and adopt blu ray as the drive for the next xbox either way sony will still have the upper hand.

As time goes on, MS is getting weaker slowly but surely.. HD-DVD is now dead, 360 is failing hard in Japan, PS3 outselling 360 in japan by large margins and is starting to outsell it in Europe, All the Heavy hitting PS3 games for this year are a lot better than 360s games, Xbox live getting sued recently over network problems and ofcourse the RROD. As someone said previously, the 360 is built on quick sand.. PS3 is built on solid ground.

By the way, i would love a copy of that issue of EGM with the cover called "Battle station" which shows a tomato being thrown at the PS3, that will be a good thing to keep for history sake when sony makes the biggest comeback ever!

Ottozero

Hey fanboy chill... IDC. This is my last Console Generation. Been gaming since the 2600 and believe me the PS3 is my last system. But the 360 is not dead. They have sold about 17 million units and they only suck in Japan. PS3 has less then 5 million units sold and have since changed their SKU about 5 million times :-).. Oh yeah this is my last Generation of gaming ..... I guess only one Game could bring me back for one more Generation and that game might never be made...SHENMUE 3 WHERE R U !!!!!!!!!!

do people even think when they type anymore?

this will be big for the ps3. You cannot underestimate how something like this will make sony find new markets that are closed to the 360 in a similar way that the wii finds new markets who will be introduced to video games. Any gamer would like to have a ps3 for the games, sure, but a movie buff would probably pick up a video game once and a while, and really, there are a lot of people who want the best of everything and that is exactly what the ps3 is right now, even if it doesn't have that many games atm.

edit: still though, in general the 360 is the seasoned gamer's console of choice

Because we can believe everything NYTimes posts.

No, because we can believe what that particular NYT article is reporting--namely, that Warner has gone blu. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand the consequences of that decision.

if this is true....then i would love to see the concequences you are talking about? if movies is going to affect how well a gaming console does.......then it would be just quite sad, not only that, but the PS3 will have to go against the wii and 360...which are both way ahead of the ps3.....

yes in fact. Sony has more money to spend of everything including game development. Also sony can focus less on pushing the blu-ray standard and put more foucus on pushing the ps3's games development.

HD-DVD has cancled ther CES press confrince because they have no good news... they are dead

I don't understand what people are talking about when they say the ps3 has no good games. The first 8 months were slow but it has good games out now and the line-up is looking good. So, whether or not the ps3 starts to dominate (and I hope it does) I have been happy with it, both as a game console and a blu-ray player.

being a manticore, i cant care less what happens

i just think you're dead wrong. just going by the people i know, they all have or want a 360/wii. and almost none have any interest in a ps3 at this time. though "at this time" is probably the key phrase

REforever101

If you want the Playstation brand to fail then you are hardly a Manticore. And personal experince means nothing. I know more people that got a PS3 this christmas then any other console. Not to mention almost everyone that doesnt ownone wants one There just wating for the titles they really want( MGS4, FF13 etc.)

I find it funny how nobody relizes how devestating it would be to the console industry if the leader of the industry over the past decade failed this generation .

i just never understood the whole "sony is dead" thing. I don't know if it's cause a lot of people are too young on this board to check sony's history, or are just too blind to see, but they ALWAYS start off slow. The original playstation went against the saturn which was from an established company, nobody thought that sony would last. Then when the ps2 came out they were getting blasted by the dreamcast before they finally turned it around. I don't understand why people think this time is going to be different. Sony + Video game systems = success. It's inevitable. It's only been a year, RELAX.sixringz1

Well actually, the announcement of the ps2 pretty much killed the dreamcast, and the saturn never stood a chance against the playstation.

[QUOTE="Dante2710"] if this will help the ps3 do better, it will once again prove that the ps3 is being looked at as a blu-ray player rather than a gaming console....
fuzzysquash

That's a false dichotomy.

The PS3 is both: a blu-ray player and a videogame console.

If it is looked at both ways, that's an advantage, not a disadvantage.

Again, leave your ethical considerations out of this. We're talking business: and if the PS3 can be seen as offering high def DVD playback and high def gaming capability, that just means its perceived value goes up.

would u mind telling me why games do not sell as well as they do on the 360? im talking about exclusives games and 3rd party games, this might help move some consoles,. but it will most likely hurt those third parties since their games do not sell as well as they do on the 360

...and why would blu-ray playback hurt the ability of third parties to sell games on the Playstation 3? :?

I think there are quite a lot of people who bought a PS3 because its a cheap Blu-ray. They didn't want it as a gaming system. The attach rates of PS3 games show it. There are only 2 PS3 games that have sold at least a million and both are published by SCEA. MotorStorm only managed to be a million seller by being bundled.

Do you know why the wii in the number one console? Because it reached beyond the harcore and entertained the casual.

I guarantee you 95% of casual homeowners don't have a clue what Blu-Ray is nor do they give a ****
