@Krelian-co:
There you are.... I was wondering when you would show up..... :)
@jg4xchamp: I disagree with that assessment. Mechanics are the single most important factor in any game played in real time. The 3D Zelda games have poor combat mechanics and I can understand why many do not like them. To me, their saving grace is that they aren't really built around combat so much as environmental puzzle solving. They also have a lot of charm and you can breeze through the crap. I would take Ninja Gaiden 2 over any of the Souls games. I'd probably take Ninja Gaiden 3.
I guess I would agree that the Souls series does combat better than most (maybe all) 1st or 3rd person action RPGs, though. It's just a genre that I don't like much. AI tends to be abysmal, and the choices you get in character design tend to limit your choices in combat.
I didn't say mechanics aren't important, but they aren't the only thing that dictates great gameplay.
Resident Evil 4's mechanics are inherently silly: stopping and shooting over free movement? On the other hand it has more gameplay ideas in one game, than entire shooter franchises have in all their games combined (Uncharted, Halo, Gears). It's gameplay is nothing short of superb because the mechanics are complimented with how the enemies behave, how the bosses behave, how the game is paced, what scenarios are made for those mechanics. Regardless the actual mechanics for the Souls games are terrific, simple, elegant, and effective. The animations/audio give the game an overall great feel on a basic level. That's something you can't really say for Zelda's combat or even something like God of War where Kratos's blades are feathery as shit.
Ninja Gaiden 3 doesn't exist.
Actually, stopping to shoot is just realistic. It's not all that fun, though. I enjoyed RE4, but I eventually stopped playing it before beating it, so I must not have enjoyed it that much.
@PurpleMan5000:
Exactly..... however I think Stopping to shot in a Co-Op does serve another purpose besides realism.... I think it promotes better Cooperation...... the game would be pretty awkward if the mechanics allowed you to do things so much better that it negates the need for a partner.....
Hence why President Evil 5 creams 4 and 6
A lot of old games get a bad rap from a visual standpoint, imo. I hear a lot of people rag on snes Starfox and many N64 games. Old consoles greatly relied on good displays for optimal picture quality.

Anything in 3D prior to the launch of the Dreamcast is completely unplayable to me today. I have no idea how I played those games back then, because they give me a headache now.
(Aged well) MGS1 - I don't understand why some people think that MGS1 has 'aged' the worst because personally, its simplistic controls, 2D top down perspective, B grade action flick / anime hybrid story, brilliant music, memorable bosses, suprisingly good performance (little to no framerate issues and camera issues) and actually good voice acting make it a fantastic experience. What, is the graphics?
I'm pretty sure I'm gonna start a shitstorm by saying this, but MGS1 aged badly because MGS2's mechanics were just better. More specifically--sigh, here we go--because Twin Snake exists.
MGS2 is technically much better, and that's about it for me. I don't appreciate the direction of this sequel, and overall MGS1 was a better game to experience; i vastly prefered the soundtrack, the boss battles (the bosses themselfs) and the story (which was a pleasant amalgam of 80s action flicks and japanese anime) over MGS2. As for its gameplay, well, it's as simple as it gets. There was nothing serious that i couldn't get accustomed to.
Haven't played Twin Snakes, so i dunno. I don't have much free time, so i haven't decided if its worth playing yet..
It's basically MGS1 with MGS2's gameplay. And crazy cutscenes. Which in MGS lore, doesn't mean shit.
So I'm on NG+ and this time my goal is simply..... get the Lord Vessel as fast as possible....
In just over an hour I rang both Bells.... I only killed bosses.... nothing else and finally made it to Ornstein and Fatso..... so Ornstein leans foward in his legendary "Im gonna shove this up your ass" stance in preperation of the Ultimate Lunge, and me being the clever sexy fox that I am... position my self so that Smough Blocks Ornstein...... and lo and behold.... it worked.... Ornstein lunge was cancelled by Smoughs fat ass.....or atleast thats would have happened in any other properly designed game.....
but this Dark Souls so
Heres what happened.... l Ornstein did actually stop when he colided with Smough then he leaps into the air to do the jumping thrust but before he can even finnish.... he teleports back to the ground already in motion charging towards me to finnish the lunge that Smough Cancelled.....
Teleporting thing is nothing new.... in DarK Root Garden the Ents flat out dissapear and reappear when you cross the bridges.... in New Londo the Dark Wraiths teleport to the entrance of that large room where the steps are......
And according to Steven and Tony they Crystal Soul Speared a Batwing Demon so hard that it didn't even get a chance to die.... it just vanished into thin air..... this is the bloody game with 89 on Metacritic.....
Also I just learned you can't parry the Dark Wraith's 4 hit flurry...... Harsh but fair my Fat Ass !
