All cows should read this, maybe you guys will understand why RAM is so important.

bottleneck #1 for the Ps3: I it uses the same amount of RAM a 3 year old computer has.

bottleneck #2 for the Ps3: Blue ray may seem pretty cool, but the tranfer rate is so slow, developers hate working with it.

reilo

What? To #1: The PS3 uses 256MB of XDR ram that is FOUR times faster than the RAM in the X360. The second unit of RAM is equivelant to the X360. So I guess, the X360 is also running on old hardware?

i wouldn't call 25gb/s vs 22gb/s 4 times faster plus more ram is more important than how fast it is

The Ps3 only has 256 mbs of ram. Look it up.

RAAM hides under the beds of PS3 owners and will kill them if they turn their PS3 on.

Plus others have been mentioning that the XDR RAM has high timings (latencies). The two systems have their own advantages. The 360 has the better gpu, and the PS3 has the better cpu. In the end, I think that I'll enjoy both consoles very much.

Helllo!!

360 - has 512mb SHARED ram - vram and cpu ram.

PS3 - 256 cpu ram - 256 vram.

ffs can the lemmings stop these stupid threads - both consoles have jack s*** RAM.

Besides the PS3's multiple ( 8 ) cores means that the data stored in the RAM can be processed faster - and more of it.
Only problem is that no one understands how to properly utilise the cores yet :?:
muscrat_01
it doesn't matter how fast the cpu is if it lacks ram you have issues. a amd64 3500+ with 2gb ram and a 7900 would completly kill a core 2 duo e6700 with 512mb ram and a 8800gtx since you would be running of the page file most of the time in new games which would make it panfully slow

*poke* Xbox games can use the HDD to cache data providing its there. Oblivion makes extensive use of it. however. Just because my video card has 512mb of ram it does not mean my PC has 2512 mb of ram. Different types, do different things ;)

Yeh I remember I had to hold A to clear the cache because the game had stored more than 50 of the same file while i was on the xbox treay thing.

Basically it says the SPE's are very complex and developers might not want to spend large amounts of time programming those (the 7 remaining cores). In the end it would take far longer to create a game for the PS3 that looks just as good as a game for the X360. And for time reasons it probably would conclude that PS3 games generally will look less good then X360 games like we see in Gamespot's feature with the graphic comparision where multiplatform games looked better on the X360 then the PS3.

Or so the article says.

Whilst the RAM factor is indeed a big one, the level of ignorance (on both sides) is astounding. And it is just as relevant to examine the surrounding and relevant architecture to assess the performance of the RAM. My take on it is this: Which systems RAM gives greater real world potential? the 360. By much? No However it should be noted that of the 256mb xdr ram on the ps3 64mb (and 32mb GDDR3 ram) must be used for the operating system. This means that the 'cell' can only ever use 192mb (in games) (assuming the gpu isn't trying to get any) compared to the 360 which uses only 32mb from the unified GDDR3 RAM, meaning far more RAM can be accessed by the cpu (sharing with the gpu) if needed. This factor gives the 360 a large advantage over the ps3. Finally. In reference to the topic title, it's actually three words.

Please do any console fanboys, let alone the ones rambling on this thread - and TC himself - please rember one extrememly important peince of information - THAT YOU KEEP FORGETTING!

A good / fast CPU - with multiple cores - can process the Data stored in the ram alot faster - and large multiple blocks of data at once.

So even if the RAM is not that big - the data stored there can be processed quicker - thus freeing up the ram - and avoiding bottlenecks.

Now compare the 3 core 360 cpu - with 512 mb *shared RAM - that is used also for the GPU
and
The 8 core Cell - with 256 mb cpu only* RAM.

I think there is quite a tradeoff.......
muscrat_01
But I still think this is an apple to oranges comparison. I'm pretty sure that the PS3's cpu memory is substantially faster than 360's memory.

The Difference Here is that PS3 uses 256 Dedicated for system, and 256 for Video only. The issue is the same as with dedicated Pixel shaders and Vertex shaders. There are going to be games, like FEAR for instance, that require more System ram than video ram, to calculate the Impressive AI.This results in one side being bogged down and the other is wasted. Sure XDR is 4 times faster, but the problem is that the bandwith isn't.

Example:

You have 2 sinks, one sink can hold 256oz., and the other holds 1024oz.The spouts, however, are only slightly faster for the 1024oz, so when instead of getting 1024 to go down the drain into the CPU, you only get 1/4 of that, because the rate at which they fill is the same.

So 2GB/s of extra bandwith is worth it to you, for $200, when the 360 looks better due to a U.S.A. GPU, and can uses it's ram better anyway.

Also, the PS3 uses 12% of the total ram and CPU power for the OS, while the 360 uses only 3%, so more is left foe games.

And once the data gets to the cell, it doesn't even go as fast as the 360CPU. The 360 has 3 cores, capable of running 2 threads each, or 6 total threads, runing at 3GHz per core, or 1.5GHz per thread, whereas the PS3 uses 6 SPEs, which can handle 1 thread each, which run at 700Mhz each, less than half the power.

Yeah, the PS3 had to use 5-10 GB of RAM on HDD to make it run faster loading times. Which is kind of embarrassing. 5 GB? That's a lot.

WTF were you doing necroing this five month old thread?

P.S. Actually thats a swap file and its not really RAM and oh...get me a link to those statistics. Kthnxbye!

The PS3 has 512 mbs of ram, just like the 360. Unlike the 360 the PS3 has a standard HDD that can be used to cache files that appear often in a game, freeing up ram to store data that is used more frequently.Wasdie

And don't forget that the PS3 uses a different type of RAM that can we written as well as read at the same time, meaning if used effectively it's like having a whole GB of RAM, and the 360 can not do that. But, to be unbiased, I must say that half of the PS3's RAM is used on the XMB.

looking at games coming out for the ps3 doesnt look like ram is a problem. you just have to look at the graphics and scale of some of the games on the way to understand it has enough as far as im aware the ps3 is a streaming beast which means amount of isnt as important please correct me if im wrong

PS3: The PS3 has 512mb of RAM total. It's readily partition in half for both the CPU and the GPU, meaning 256mb of RAM each. The CPU RAM is clocked at 3.2ghz, and the GPU RAM is clocked at 700mhz.

360: The Xbox 360 also has 512mb of RAM, clock in at 700mhz overall. Microsoft has left the partitioning up to the developers, so they may do what they want with it.

Its 3 words........ Random Access Memory. Self OWNED. PS3 has dedicated memory to both the GPU and CPU. If th e360 has 512mb of Ram, does it mean that it has no Vram?

I would like to point out that the PS3's OS uses less and less RAM, because firmware updates sometimes modify the RAM cache. The OS currently uses only 52mb, so some more RAM has been made available to games. Sony can trim it down even further as time goes by.

But I have to agree, both consoles have sh** RAM. The PS3 could have had 512/512, seeing as it was finalized in 2006, but NOOOO! It's too much!

Well, as you said, the OS is using less RAM, so not so much RAM is needed. Of course, more RAM is better, but the time it takes to stream data off the disc to take advantage of the RAM might prove too much. The future is really in the HDD in my opinion, unless there's some super update, and a new component is brought out. That, and if Bill Gates fixes the internet.

Finally. In reference to the topic title, it's actually three words.TheWinds

Yeah they have actually lowered the ram that the Os needs for the Ps3 through their firmware updates, So it basicaly itsa null point and i can see Ms and Sony bringing down what the Os needs in terms of ram for both systems.

http://computer.howstuffworks.com/ram.htm

All cows should read this, maybe you guys will understand why RAM is so important.

bottleneck #1 for the Ps3: I it uses the same amount of RAM a 3 year old computer has.

bottleneck #2 for the Ps3: Blue ray may seem pretty cool, but the tranfer rate is so slow, developers hate working with it.

Hey dude, watch your mouth. My computer is 3 years old and it has more RAM than PS3.

Needs moar RAM.

because XDR ram is soooo much slower than ddr3.... yea go look it up. its something like 3x the speed of ddr3. the only thing is that it is harder to allocate the ram usage since they are separated. glhf!

[QUOTE="HeavenlySword75"][QUOTE="-GeordiLaForge-"][QUOTE="HeavenlySword75"]Why do most PS3 games have farther Draw Distances? And why does Gears of War choke on Cut Scenes and have horrible Draw Distance, same with Oblivion. These are Ram related. Why does GT:HD and F1 Championship and Motorstorm look so great? PS3 has 512 Ram and it has XDR ram that 360 does not have.-GeordiLaForge-
The 360 has the MUCH better gpu and internal architecture. The XDR memory doesn't mean much if alot of the info is in a pagefile because the RAM is being used for the OS. Pagefiles are pathetically slow btw. The 360 uses patented procedural synthesis techniques to fit gigs worth of info into its RAM, which is much faster. Plus, this adds an extra bonus. Since the bandwidth is so large between the gpu and cpu, and since the cpu is feeding the gpu so much of its info, the Xenos stays almost 100% fed at all times...

So far it does not show in the Games. Were looking at the games here and im not seeing any superiority in the GPU. Or is Xenon bottlenecking Xenos. Either way I havent see anything like F1 or GT:HD on 360 yet and its been out over 1 year. Gears of War is nothing special because of the horrible draw distance.

Those games use real pictures as textures, which is the only reason that they look good. But walls, floors, and most other surfaces in PS3 games consist of flat planes with blurry textures attached. 360 LAUNCH games on the other hand had tiny little 3d details on every surface.

good ol' PDZ :D

The N64 not only had more RAM than the PS1 but it was just an all around more powerful system, but what made developers able to produce better graphics on the PS was the space that CD's provided over cartridges. (sound familiar? blu-ray, DVD)

Nah. Riddick last gen was a prime example of this.

Riddick looked great on Xbox with 64mb of ram.

For a slight upgrade on the PC it took 512mb.

RAM must be different from PC and consoles.
