[QUOTE="ianuilliam"]But $15 a month + $5-7 per 5 day rental is WAY more than $10/month with unlimited rentals from somewhere like Gamefly. So far, almost all of the 15 or so games offered are multiplats, so you could rent all those same games, plus hundreds more for way less with a console, without having to worry about needing a 12+ meg internet service just to make the games run as smoothly as the console counterpart. So even as a rental service, it is a horrible option.

True, however for now it is free for a year : )

I'm still not seeing this $15 a month thing. After the first free year, if I choose to stick with OnLive I only pay $4.95 a month. That's $10 cheaper a month ($120 a year) then this magical number I keep reading. Where's the link showing that?

The first year free, followed by $5 a month is a special promotional price, referred to as the 'Founding Members'. The promotion is sponsored by AT&T, and lasts until July 15th, 2010. As in, anyone who joins the service by that date, gets their subscription locked in at that promotional price. The site currently doesn't list what the fee will be for people that join after the 15th, but prior to the service launching and the 'Founding Members' promotion starting, they had announced a $15/month pricepoint.

Only for people who join in the next 2 weeks or so.

Onlive will not suddenly start charging $15 in July. I guarantee it.

Besides, they plan on releasing a free version without a subscription fee that offers rentals. Why do people ignore this and only talk about the subscription service?

"The OnLive Game Portal is for gamers looking for direct access to OnLive games without being required to subscribe to the features of the full OnLive Game Service. Through the OnLive Game Portal, gamers will be able to play select games directly on a rental basis as well as game demos for free; subject to available OnLive service capacity and whatever usage limits are associated with each given demo. Rentals will be priced on a per-game basis. There is no service fee for the OnLive Game Portal."

The service already only offers like 15 games or so, this free Game Portal that offers rentals on 'select games' and demos sounds like it's probably only going to offer a handful of games, probably ones that aren't very popular, and only if they have servers not being used. if one of the paying subscribers wants to play they'll boot you right off. Basically, it sounds as if this service is being offered so you can experience the way the system works in order to try to get you to subscribe.

okay....thanks. :) I'm sure they'll reconsider their obscene pricing after seeing how this first year goes. Even though I'm a "founding member" (kinda lame if you ask me) I do not EVER intend on purchasing a game on their service because I do consider it a rip off.

I dont fully understand the world needs to develop a better internet connection argument. I lived in a 3rd world country for some odd 8 years. They will take years to reach development that other countries surpassed a decade ago. Onlive is available in places where the required internet connection is quite acceptable. It would be quite alright for most of Europe, Canada and many Asian countries. That is a very big potential market. So no, its not to early, there is no need to limit potential on behalf of world equality.designer-

Ummm... Canada has terrible internet dude.... its 1 of the most expensive places, and 1 of the slowest to boot. I love my country, but dang, the internet is teh SUXORZ!

I currently live in South Korea... my internet here is crazy fast... I downloaded a 66MB file in 2 sec... yeah thats TWO SECONDS! crazy.

But there will be plenty of people who do. They give the first year away, and make the second year cheap for early adopters so that you buy a ton of games. Then, when the price goes up to $15 a month, you're stuck begrudgingly paying it, because people are extremely bad at grasping the concept of sunk costs. Before you know it, you have all of these poor saps paying $180 a year just to keep accessing games they don't even own. After July 15th, OnLIVE will be OFFICIALLY the biggest ripoff on the planet, until then it's actually just a scam.

Now we're just making assumptions, frankly, assuming the worst. Until we know what the free service is actually like, or how reliably it performs, I don't see why people are jumping to conclusions about its utility as a rental service.

By the way, Gamefly is definitely not $10/month. It's $16 - minimum - and perhaps most importantly, requires you to own the particular console of the game you're renting and can't play PC games.

1) They need to fix the pricing scheme. $14.95 a month plus $60 for a game is way too much. Yes, you don't have to buy a $400 console but you don't own any of this stuff. You are basically leasing it. And nobody wants to pay that much for leasing. Even the $60 game you buy is only available to you for 2 years. The also offer it for rent, which is a little bit more reasonable.

LP4EVA2005

and this is why Onlive Fails

Actually I spoke with OnLive earlier on the phone and they informed me that they lowered the monthly price to 4.95 per month because people weren't happy with the 14.95 price. I mean whats a measely 5 bucks a month?? On top of that the first year is FREE! I was also talking with them about giving us a subscription based service where we could pay a few dollars extra and rent like 3 a month as much as we want. Kind of like gamefly or gamemine.

Right you are. I've never had a reason to check, but Gamefly's advertised price of 8.95 is, in fact, a cheap ploy to get you to try it.

I'm not a believer, in fact, I'm sure it'll fail.

I played it at my friends house (who has a 12mbps connection with comcast) and when things started moving around it started to look like a youtube video. It was horrid. There was also SLIGHT lag. Not as much as KZ2 but still it was noticeable. Another thing, my friend has a fast connection, but my area, which is just 3 miles away, has only ISPs that give up to 1.5mbps connection.

Note, I live in the 11th largest city in the US.

It's a pretty horrible alternative, considering the pricing system and internet connection needed.
