Yes, yes, please yes.
I talked about something like this with my business partner back in the late 90's, but that's all it was: just talk. This guy in the video seems to know his stuff, and I really hope they can pull this off.
I've been skeptical about this for a while, and I still don't think that the internet infrastructure is ready for this just yet. Give us a couple more years to improve the infrastructure and have a better distribution of high-speed internet, and then this might be a good idea.jalexbrownif only america was on the same level as asia and europe....
Cloud gaming doesn't appeal to me because it is a one size fits all experience. If I was willing to sacrifice the freedoms and performance benefits of PC gaming for lower hardware costs and convenience; I'd be a console gamer.
Onlive to me, should it ever actually work, would mostly be as a try before you buy service. Of course that depends on how expensive the subscription fee would be.

What exactly is Onlive? (I'm new to this)
hypoty
It's basically like streaming a game from someone else's computer to your screen. This allows you to play high end PC games without owning a PC.
In other words, it's cloud computering ;) servers got all applications and your device see only output data. I recommend to see Googles Chrome OS presentation to understand this idea.
After watching this session, it's looks like people who like justin.tv gameing might love this sevice
Buddy, that's gonna happen no matter what, slowly but surely. People who buy this clearly aren't you, it's people who like the advantages and don't care about the "disadvantages." I don't pirate, I don't buy used, so it's fine for me.Looks like a gimmick to allow companies to control us more.

Good stuff. I hope for OnLive to be a commercial success so that it garners more support. May Gaikai work as expected as well.

Gaikai will initially launch in Europe so perhaps that's the better way to go.
It's simply not for me. I don't like digital distribution because then I feel like I don't really own the games. I'm not only a gamer but a collector. I want a box and a disc. So OnLive is basically an abomination to me and I hope that it will fall flat on its face.nethernova
You are allowed to have your physical copies so why aren't we allowed to have our digital copies? :?

The whole 'collection thing' is getting much better as well. Just look at cover flow on iTunes. And now they're even adding full liner notes. I used to love collecting CDs (and i still do) but ever since i put all my music on my computer i've really appreciated having it all there in digital form. You can show off your music collection via cover-flow just as you can by having a shelf full of CDs. Only you save a bucketload of space.I dont know if OnLive can really succeed as a platform, seeing as its very likely all the big console makers will be doing this in a few years. Doctor-McNinja
They recently received major funding and OnLive already has developer support as well. Every game released for the PC will also be released on OnLive. At least it would make sense to do so since you don't need to specifically develop a game for the OnLive platform.
I'm interested even though I know I personally won't be able to use it. I'd imagine a 5-10 mb connection is what you'd need, it's essentially like streaming an HD movie on XBL, whilst playing online as well, you're sending all the input and recieving the output. Cool idea I hope it works.bobbetybob
Why not sign up for the beta and try it out yourself? So far they said that you need a 1 Mbps connection for SD gaming and 5 Mbps for HD gaming.
OnLive is a good concept, but for some people like me and in the UK, ISP's in most cases don't give the full advertised speed you pay for. Like i pay for 8mb broadband but rarely get even 3mb, usually 2.5mbps all the time and i live in the city not too far from the servers. This could be a problem for OnLive :|

Why not sign up for the Gaikai beta which will initially launch in Europe and see if such a service actually works?
He speaks as if it would be a good thing to replace all gaming devices with this service. Frankly I don't like the idea and hope it fails. We don't need a company controlling our gaming experience + the bandwidth requirement is a little rediculous. I have 100GB per month up/down and already use up a lot of it, after 100GB I get charged high fees.

Hmm I have a 1mb connection so that could work, I might look into it thanks.
EDIT:Signing up for Gaikai, On Live Beta is US only.
hmm, interesting ,if this works it could be either the greatest, or the worst thing to happen to the industry. Basically this console will cause a monopoly. IF it works as it says it does of course.
Yeah. Let's just wait and see. If it works it'll be amazing and if not I'll just keep using my PS3.I really want to be excited for this..it just seems too good to be true..but if it works then it will be AMAZING :D

It is unlikely that OnLive will replace all gaming devices. It will simply be another platform to game on. If you don't mind consoles, then you won't mind OnLive. If you don't want a company controlling your gaming experience at all, then go for PC gaming.

Thanks for that, i didn't know about Gaikai.
Looks like OnLive may have competition

Good luck with that. I signed up to the Gaikai beta myself. I hope I get accepted.
I signed up for the Beta tester, Im sure I will get it, but how long before Verizon or AT&T buys them out? It truly looks like a homerun.

How would it cause a monopoly?

Such a service hasn't even launched yet and yet competition is already surfacing. Perhaps Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft and even Valve will offer such a service in the future.
