June US kick-off for PC/Mac streaming service; $14.95 subscription and publisher support; No details on Euro launch yet
Controversial games streaming service OnLive will launch in the US on June 17th backed by Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, Take-Two Interactive, THQ and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, MCV can reveal.
Details for the cloud-based gaming service, which was unveiled amidst much attention at GDC last year, are to be given in a Wednesday keynote this morning at the GamesBeat one-day event at the 2010 Game Developers Conference.
The service launches on PC and Mac, and costs $14.95 a month, the firm told MCV.
That price "provides access to an ever-increasing library of high-end, new release game content and a host of exclusive community feature such as Brag Clips and massive spectating," said COO Mike McGarvey
"Individual titles will be available for purchase or rental on an a la carte basis. Specific game pricing, including rentals, purchases and loyalty programs, will be announced prior to the consumer launch event at E3. We'll also be announcing additional loyalty and discount programs for consumers in the coming months."

Well it was in beta for a while so at least it has a release date now. Not too excited for it personally.
wait, the games stream  ? So that would mean ill need a faster connection no?Fuhgeddabouditt
The connecton requirements are pretty reasonable (I think a minimum of 2.5-5.0mb/s), however it's obviously going to be a limited access model, considering that many places do not even have access to that internet speed.
Hmm, interesting, be fun to see how this pans out, in terms of marketing and if it's actually good.bobbetybobFrom stuff leaked from the beta's it appears to actually work. Thing now is price. I'm not sure if it will work having to pay a fee similar to Gamefly + per game you buy/rent.
[QUOTE="Fuhgeddabouditt"]wait, the games stream  ? So that would mean ill need a faster connection no?Ontainwell you'll need broadband yes. i'd say most ppl that play online games already have this. Yeah but you'll need fast broadband for it too actually run in HD, in full screen.
Seriously  OnLive's gonna flop harder than N-Gage

Maybe not. It's a very interesting concept, allowing for people to play games requiring more powerful systems using their basic PC etc. It could be very popular in countries where consoles and/or PC components are incredibly expensive (though whether they have a sufficient internet connection remains to be een).

You'd save hundreds of dollars on consoles, a gaming PC rig and buying games. ;)lets see $15 a month to (hopefully if your internet connection holds up) play games you dont own at 720p or less witha highly compressed image.
yeah. i really see this taking off.

If $14.95/month gave me access to a Gametap-style library, this news would be win. As it stands, however, that appears to only be the entry fee.
So if I bought a game using their service, I would have to be subscribed - just to play it. An annual subscription being basically a necessity, that's $180 a year?
Meanwhile, PCs are getting more and more console ports, hardware is getting cheaper and system requirements are going down. Building a gaming PC from absolute scratch would still cost less than 4 years of subscription to the service.
I don't know. I suppose it will still find an audience, but I'm disappointed. Onlive could revolutionize PC gaming, someday, but only if it acts as a truly affordable substitute to gaming PCs.

You only pay for individual games if you want to rent, or buy them without paying the subscription fee.

if this takes off it could kill pc gaming. who is going to want to buy a 900 $ rig anymore if you could stream games on max way cheaper .
Just all seems very ahead for its time. Deffaintly something that we could see after the next (not current) gen consoles come out. There isnt enough Broadband bandwidth to support that amount of usage. Then there is the lag between you and the game then you the game and online multiplayer. They must be kidding themselves if they think it will run smoothly all the time.
For $15 a month I could buy 3 more games a year, so I'd say I'm not getting it.
For $15 a month you could buy 3 games or for $15 you can play ALL the games on onlive? No, for $15 a month you get to play demos etc. From the site it appears that you still have to buy all the games from them that you want to play, like Steam. My question is this: if you already own a game, would they let you stream it from them? (I'm guessing the answer is a big fat 'NO!'.So wait you have pay a $14.95 a month subscription PLUS buy the games at full price? Seems a tad pricey when steam is just right there.

If they cant stream video in HD that well what chance do they have to steam a Game? This is not going to work

Have a feeling that controls are going to lag BIG TIME...

Wait, you have to pay the 14.95 monthly subscription as well as rental fees on a game to game basis? Talk about a bummer. :?
I might give it a try if they get a better and more diverse library and some more PC-exclusive titles on there.

Your streaming high quality games to any run of the mill PC with great results, this isnt XBOX live where your paying for features that should be free, that cost goes to the servers which will be streaming you games like crysis at high quality. I myself wont be getting this because i have a PC capable of running any game out there on high settings already, but if this picks up i may consider buying Onlive instead of a new PC next time around.
im gonna try it out for the first month to see how it is...even tho i have a high end pc i still want to give this a shotstereointegrityI'll probably do the same and see how it goes.
