The NPD Group has published its Games Segmentation report, detailing seven different gamer demographics and habits - revealing, among other things, that only 10 per cent of PlayStation 2 owners also own a PlayStation 3.

In the report, the estimated 174 million gamers are broken down into seven groups: 3 per cent are "Extreme gamers"; nine per cent are "Avid PC gamers"; 17 per cent are "Console gamers"; 14 per cent "Online PC gamers"; 15 percent are "Offline PC gamers"; 22 percent are "Young Heavy gamers"; and 20 percent are "Secondary gamers'.

Young Heavy gamers - the largest group at over 38 million people - play for above average amounts of time on every videogame system but show a strong preference for portable games platforms. Six out of every ten Nintendo DS and PlayStation Portable owners fall into the category of young heavy gamers.

The report also details the cross-platform gaming habits of PlayStation owners. PS3 owners were found to be more likely to own other next-generation consoles when compared to Wii and Xbox 360 owners, however only 10 per cent of PS2 owners also own the PS3. While 45 per cent of PlayStation Portable owners also own a DS, only 21 per cent of DS owners also own a PSP.

The growth of digital distribution is reflected in the report, with 14 per cent of games purchased in the past three months through digital downloads, with Avid PC gamers making 27 per cent of their purchases through digital means.

looks like sony is loosing its fanbase after cuz of the falling PS3.

Statistics =/= fact. Unless they polled every single PS3 owner. Though this is significant. But 10% isn't nothing. It's like 12 million.

No I didn't . I wasn't offered that course at my school. Please explain how they could gather up this information and why I should take it seriously.

Because of math. You don't need to poll everyone, you just need a cross-sample. It's like checking how much oil is in your car: you don't have to drain it out and measure it, you just need to take a cross-sample with your dipstick. A more thorough explanation can be had here.

I'm sure it's probably more like 40% of PS2 owners actually got a PS3, the PS2 has padded numbers everybody I know had to buy at least 2 PS2's and I had to buy 4 of them due to that stupid disc read problem. 100 million PS2's sold, true. All to different people, false.

U know how much 40% of PS2 owners (140 million) are?

10 % sounds about right.

Oh goodie, I'm a statistic.

And is this really surprising? The PS2 is a casual console and the PS3's price alone makes it anything but.

heh. exactly. if 40% of the ps2 owners bought a ps3, it would be the sales leader so far with about 56 million units

Everybody knows that whatever you do a survey on/with there are ways and often reasons to find things looking a certain statistical way. How were people polled and how was the cross section devised? Who wanted this in the first placeand who helps fund it?

In game sports stats are the most inscrutible yet even they give a distorted version of what actually happened on many occasions. Stats are by nop means the clear evidence they may appear and treating them with a level of mistrust is usually advisable when studies don't get done unless a certain result/trend is wanted to appear. Otherwise why all the conflicting stats on the dangers of second hand smoke depending on which lobby group put up the cash for the survey/questionnaire/research.

That's without going into all the variables always missed out-and that people lie a hell of a lot.

And to think stats and surveys are a whole industry-when the people could be doing something worthwhile-like colouring in the yellow stripes to make bees cooler and completely black, or you know making something that's useful to someone.

I have had statistic control classes and unless the samples are from good sources, meaning that the samples would need to be taken from all regions with all the variables put into play. Statistics can be a good indicator if there done with every possible variable added into the figures.

You have to figure that alot of people purchased a PS2 when it was $299 or less. The PS3 has a long way to go before it reaches that price point.

Sony has a way to go to get the other 90% but seeing that Sony plan on supporting the PS3 for 10 years like PS1&2 I am sure the the other 90% will eventually buy a PS3

I owned N64 then PS2 then 360. I switched each generation. I now own a GameCube and PS3 though. Anyway, that is a pretty accurate statistic I'd say.

Ok that makes it sound a lot more believable, when you put it like that.

So far, I've owned all Sony consoles in the past 3 gens, and all Nintendo console in the past 4 generations. Not sure why I'm telling you guys this though..

People are not seriously advocating that because only 10% of the past PS2 demographic have turned themselves on to a PS3..That the PS3 has another 90% under their belt?...Hummm..ok... whatever makes yea sleep better at night...

Fact is Sony is bleeding market share to both NIN and MS...and if anyone truly believes that the PS3 will see the same dominance/market share that the PS2 experienced is setting themselves up for a huge disappointment....
