Codemasters' elusive war sequel, Operation Flashpoint 2, has reared its head and is looking rather stunning in the pages of the latest PC Gamer UK, on shelves now.

It's looking and sounding very promising indeed. You can find the full issue on newsstands right now, and expect much more on Operation Flashpoint 2 on these pages very soon.

PC Gamer calls Codies' war zone "the most mind-bogglingly vast and mercilessly realistic battlefield gaming has ever known," which couldn't be higher praise if they tried, really.

"Operation Flashpoint 2: Dragon Rising is the sequel to the best soldier sim ever created," says PC Gamer. "It's a game being built to exacting specifications by military obsessives, to simulate the authentic behaviour of battle-hardened troops and push PC's to their limits."

And by the look of these four screenshots we've been supplied, it's going to push our PCs off the side of the desk and out the window.

The full preview in Issue 190 contains eight pages of new info and details on how Codies is pain-stakingly recreating the weapons and manoeuvres of a real soldier, including the beefiest-looking assault rifle we've ever seen.

Yay?

So are they actually keeping all the realism...or are they pulling a rainbow six and saying its realistic when really its not?

I was beggining to think people had forgotten about this game, it's looking really quite good though. I just hope the console versions are to the same quality of the PC version.

The EGO™ Engine, the next generation of the Neon Engine, was build from the ground-up for multi-purpose, so it is not just a converted version of the Colin McRae: Dirt Neon Engine. Last year Codemasters has invested about 84,3 million dollars in game desing and in the technical developement, from what the EGO™ Engine is an essential element. This multiplatform engine makes it possible for Codemasters to develope OFP2 simultaneously for next-gen consoles and for PC. Operation Flashpoint 2: Dragon Rising and Race Driver: GRID will be the first games equipped with the EGO™ Engine.

That dev's screens are always 90% photoshops. They do it so much and to such an extreme that it really borders on false advertisement. Their games look good but nowhere near as good as their bullshots.

I'm curious if they will keep to the original formula of OFP, with a good mission editor and huge map to play in. Im skeptical since it is made by different developers than the original OFP, so until then Armed Assault 2(made by original OFP devs) > OFP2

I loved Operation Flashpoint, even though it was mind bogglingly hard. I hope it keeps the realism though, and has the non-linearity of Crysis.

It was especially awesome when on Veteran difficulty, you didnt have an automap, and had to use compass points and bearing of where to go next.

AAAE confirmed.

This IS the sequel of the generation :)

Operatoin Flashpoint is probably my most played game ever in terms of hours invested. I really enjoyed the "unoffical" sequel Armed Assault, but this is looking great too.

Ill pick this up day 1 no question about it.

Its not exclusive, but the pc version will trouce the other versions no doubt simply because OFP was always a game geared towards pc.

I loved the difficulty of the 1st it really hardened you up making other shooters a breeze. The only thing that bugged me was the saving, not because of difficulty but because when I made my own maps I would do funny things while testing the map and it would be nice to save them to show friends.

O well the game was funny anyways thats probably why being so hard is passible because its not like you get frustrated..unless you're a wuss.:P

Yeah, only 1 save per level, it was hardcore.

And people say Ninja Gaiden is hard....

I think Commandos 1-3 take that crown actually.

I played it, it was definitely one of the hardest games I've ever played, but there were so many missions, I just chose one I could do and kept playing that one over and over, some of the battles could've been more epic though, like Eden Beach, add in about 20 more players and make it so you don't die in 2 shots and that'd be brilliant. Only thing that made RS fair was the fact you had 4 squad mates and it's over a small confined space. With OF don't you only have one player and it's like massive maps.

You have incredibly high standards then.

On topic, I'm not sure Codemasters have the credentials to create a sequel that lives up to expectations.

again, what some are noting in this thread is that the original was made entirely by Bohemia, Codemasters just published it... they decided not to fund BIS making a second game, so BIS tried to make ArmA and ran out of money doing it. now Codemasters is doing 2 on their own, so we really don't know how it'll play relative to the first game yet. it could go either way, honestly though.

I remember playing the Operation Flashpoint demo on PC when I was 11, i loved the amount of depth in the gameplay even if it was on a demo, i loved the fact that you didn't even have to fire a shot for you to win the battle, and the battlefields in the game are absolutely massive, i mean for me it was the most immersive military-war game i had played at the time, i play cod4 now and think how much recognition OFP should have got.

Im still worried about it.

Bohemia - the OFP devs arent making it, and right now ArmA and OFP are still the best war simulations.

Not to mention ArmA2 is due at the end of the year, or next year.

And OFP2 is being developed for cross platform - 360 and PS3. That alone screams 'design simplification'.

Serioulsy I LOVE OFP and im still cynical about OFP2...

If its anything like GRAW or R6Vegas design simplification and arcade shooter wise, im going to be seriously pissed off. And I really expect to be pissed off tbh.

Looks like it's a bit color drained in some weird way.

PC Gamer calls Codies' war zone "the most mind-bogglingly vast and mercilessly realistic battlefield gaming has ever known," which couldn't be higher praise if they tried, really.

Well that's a good thing. I think.

They never pulled the "this is a sim card" with GRID, they merely wanted to establish a prominent position in the genre by appealing to both crowds (Codemasters have had limited success with the Race Driver series in the US). Anyway, how was it a "complete *** of a game" ?

i played both versions (pc and xbox) and i was absolutely glued to it, the game made you feel as if you were part of a real army on a real battlefield, i hope the second one is as good, but then i can't afford to upgrade my pc to run it.

i didnt do pc gaming until after this game was probably dead so i went with battlefield 2 instead. but i've heard this game is so realistic that its crazy hard... and i thought battlefield 2 took time to get into to be decent. i want to get this day one so i have a chance :P i tried day of defeat source after giving up years ago, and i got owned cause everybody who was playing it apparently knew exactly where everything was and where to camp wit those pesky machine guns and snipers :P

This game isnt dead...trust me...the modding community has kept this thing alive for a very long time....they have modded every weapon into the game, and every vehical...and their are 1000's of good singleplayer / coop / multiplayer maps to download.

You can shout blasphemy if you want, but I'm honestly more excited about America's Army 3.0. :P OFP was a great game tho I never really got into it, and the sequel is looking amazing I have to admit. Still, even tho I don't wanna sound like an ass, we have to remember that it's Codemasters were talking about, there's a chance it will play better on the 360 controller than KB/M...
