There has been some confusion over how EA's new Origin service will be integrated into Battlefield 3. Battlelog plays a big part, with the ability to browse servers and join a game directly from the browser. But according to DICE's Daniel Martos, Origin will be required in order to play Battlefield 3 if the game is bought in retail. We don't know whether this is true if the game is downloaded through a digital download service other than Origin, but we suspect Origin will be required no matter what.

bf3blog

It'll take some extra resources to run Origin alongside Battlefield 3. Thoughts? Opinions?

Well if Origin is good then it probably won't be a big deal.

Expected. And I don't mind it. Yeah it uses extra resources, but so does Steam.

Shogun 2 Total War and Empire Total War requires Steam, so does a lot of other games.

Where's the problem?

"Taking it too far"? What about Valve?

Seems like a perfectly understandable thing for me :?

EA is taking it too far now, they're really forcing Origin upon their customers. Plus, as the article stated, it'll take some extra resources to run Origin alongside Battlefield 3. Thoughts? Opinions?

How it that too far when I have to use STEAM to play any VALVE game?.... what the hell like.

They are kinda late to the party. It might improve their situation, but having too many games stretched unto different services might become an issue with consumers.

Same here. That's why I asked. If they didn't require Steam, than I would agree that EA was going to far but since that isn't the case, it just ends up being a good buisness idea for EA.

And personally wouldn't have mattered since I would be buying from retail no matter what, if I was buying the PC version.

That is the big deal. Having only one was fine but more and more companies want you to use their own client. I don't want 5 clients running on the backround. Who will be next, Ubisoft?

I use steam for what little pc games I have... But iv never used origin or had the desire to use origin in the future. Now I'm going to have to be forced to install this random online service for one game. Awesome. Thanx ea.

If you don't want five clients running then close the ones you aren't using. It's not that hard.

This isn't new. Back in the day games actually required GameSpy to be used. Unlike Steam though, you could use GameSpy's browser internally in the game, so you didn't have ot have it running. Even before that there was a program called MPplayer or something like that that games required for online play.

It's not new, but it's definintly not the most convient thing ever. I would rather it all be internal in the game rather than through an external client.

50 mb client is going to eat up your memory? Seriously, it's not a big deal, GTA IV made me use some "Social Club" crap. As long as the game is worth it I will install anything they want really :P

I think a bigger problem is that it segregates communities. I wonder if you will be able to add this game to steam.

I already have a livestream running, two Folding @ Home clients, Steam, Ventrilo, and a game running and I still can't max out my RAM. The resource argument is quite lame. Using Origin is no big deal to me, I'll not miss out on the best FPS to come along this year because of a client. I have Origin installed and it's garbage, but I don't mind having it there to launch one measly game.

Origin takes like 80 mb of ram to run... Compared to the 6 gbs in my system, that's just fine. Even if it's just for one game, who cares.

How many people have 1000 clients for their games? I'm guessing not many.

This is good news for me. My BF3 pre ordered from D2D will have a nice home.

So far I can think of maybe 5 or six if you're really branching out. Hyperbole, much?
