As we continue to hear from more and more brand new Xbox One owners who say their disc drives don't work, Microsoft's solution remains the same: contact customer service.

Microsoft Has No Clear Solution For Xbox One Disc Drive Issues

If you got an Xbox One today and your disc drive isn't working, Microsoft has no answer for you yet--they say to contact their customer service. That's unfortunate news for affected gamers who thought there could be a DIY fix for what we're calling, for lack of a catchier name, the "Disc Drive of Doom," which prevents Xbox One Blu-ray drives from reading discs. People with faulty units have found themselves greeted by a horrid grinding noise when they attempt to insert games or movies.

I first wrote about the issue yesterday morning, and over the past two days, I've received roughly 150 e-mails from people who say their systems were affected. Some sent videos; others just echoed what we've been seeing since the console launched on Friday. Some complained that they'd had to spend hours on the phone waiting for someone from Microsoft customer service to answer.

I don't wish anyone a faulty console but beware lems!

That's less than 1% of all consoles. What's the point here? Both of the consoles have had launch issues.

Not that it's an ideal solution but at least you could download a game and at least still get use out of the console until the process of sending it in for replacement/repair is available. I hope all the PS4 and One buyers got an extended warranty this gen. After the last gen I'm not risking it and got it for both my new systems. Didn't get one with my WiiU though.

Oh, so the PS4 is in trouble too? I've seen videos of its disc drive doing the same thing as the X1s on top of all the overheating issues. Guess what, its a piece of technology, shit breaks for no reason.

Sony got the pick of the yield when the BR drives were ordered, seeing as though they are Sony.

MS on the other hand got Sony's sloppy leftovers.

I have worked on this former hypothesis since early Friday morning, gathering clues, following hot leads and trails that went nowhere. I have now reviewed all documents, of course wearing my prescription fanboy goggles, and proven my proposition as fact based on the overwhelming evidence at hand.

The fact that none of you had figured this out earlier is rather surprising and leaves me a bit disappointed. Also, I hereby grant permission to anyone that needs to link to this GS forum post as proof in any future argument or debate. Just remember where you heard it first. NeoGaf who?

Shame on you System Warriors, shame on you.

beware lems...over a million sold world wide so far and only 150 cases of bad drives? Pretty good numbers actually.. A little better then Sony's. I sit here and worry about my PS4, I don;t worry about my X1 one bit.

No the Xbone with the disk issue that is mentioned in the OP. I stated back in Juneboth consoles would have issues and I was ok with that, just like all new electronics.

After the PS4 launched it was made to appear that Sony rushed their console to market and the Xbone would be a tank since each part was hand vetted(lol) and we saw thread, after thread of each issue. Where were you when that was going on?

Oh I know... Go ahead and carry on with your deflection and denial.

This happened to the 360.

When I first got my Xbox 360 the disc drive barely played Halo ODST and it slowed all the way down to the point it couldn't read the game anymore.

I know there are problems with the PS4 and expected them. There will be more problems too, just like there will be with the Xbone,

When the PS4 launched every issue a new thread was made. I asked if they didn't think shit was going to happen with PS4. Nope, just ZOMG BROKEN PS4'S EVERYWHERE, LAUNCH IS A DISASTER!!!11

You didn't give a **** when that was going on for some reason. Why?

This is only people who report to guy on Kotaku, plus having to wait so long on phone. Means there are many more. Guess MS does not learn from lesson. They continue history of faulty hardware. Shame.

Sucks that both platforms have bad eggs. But that's a launch for ya. :\

some quick math

the difference between the percent of 1 star users vs 5 star users

xb1: 46% is the number of 1 star users you get when you compare the total number of 5 star users on XB1

PS4: 34% is the number of 1 star users you get when you compare the total number of 5 star users on PS4

it's not just about showing the number of negative reports on a product, it's about how many of those products are actually being compared.

Even with this link showing more total negative 1 star users for PS4, it actually has more than a 10% lower 1 star user rating than the xbox 1. More systems sold will always show more satisfied or unsatisfied users but that doesn't tell you much. The ratio of satisfied to unsatisfied customers that really tells the story....and the ratio of 1 star unsatisfied customers customers on xbone is almost at %50!

another way to look at it is if we take the total number of both 1 and 5 star ratings and see what percent of those are not satisfied it would be:

34% no satisfied with PS4

46% no satisfied with XB1.

@casharmy: yea but the xbox 1 star reviews are 90% troll reviews, as sony fans were butthurt over their hardware issues and apparently felt that was the best method to express that.

if you compare only verified reviews xbox has a way better ratio than ps4.

that said the drive issues are far too common and ms needs to address the cause of the problem, because unlike cows i dont wanna get stuck with a bricked console out of warranty because im too busy running damage control.

Yeah, I understand that lol. The percentage is high for Xbone. But what I was clarifying in my last post is that I'm not sure how many of those are verified , wish they had a way to sort.

doesn't look like 90% troll reviews lol, more like 10-15% trolls judging by flipping through the pages. There's a lot of verified complaints, just like the PS4 reviews as well.

that said the drive issues are far too common and ms needs to address the cause of the problem, because unlike cows i dont wanna get stuck with a bricked console out of warranty because im too busy running damage control.

doesn't look like 90% troll reviews lol, more like 10-15% trolls judging by flipping through the pages. There's a lot of verified complaints, just like the PS4 reviews as well.

84/283 Xbox One 1 star reviews verified.
vs
700+/829 PS4 1 star reviews verified.

DOA, DOA, RROD, Why microsoft always make low quality product. I had to go thru 5 360s. Now this crap came out again. Will return to Walmart tomorrow

The console turns on but I don't get any display, tried different hdmi cables, different ports, and different televisions but nothing. I know Amazon isn't at fault here just sharing. :(

Yeah this is legitimately pathetic, it's the same as all the dislikes on every single Xbox video. I find it funny when people go on about the "12 year olds on Xbox Live" when it's clear that a lot of Sony fanboys are incredibly fucking childish. The sad thing is though they're not 12, they should know better.

150 is a drop in the ocean. Though I really don't understand why people buy launch consoles. You're spending more for fewer games and less reliable hardware.

This. I've been saying the same thing over a year now. Only idiots buy consoles on day one.

As time goes on, unfortunately I see more 1 star reviews coming for the xbone. I give it a week.

Sucks that both platforms have bad eggs. But that's a launch for ya. :\

If you read reviews on amazon like i do you would notice that alot of the people who post bad reviews have never even used the product there reviewing. they give it a bad review because of the company who sent them the product or because of the customer service of the company who was supposed to send the product to them

Look at the official US playstation forums, the PS4 also has a disc drive problem and a probably more than 150 just there , the main issue is 66 forum pages filled with Blue blinking lights probs though and then there are other topics with different problems .

The pain from early adopters is felt in both camps .

Cows acting like that the PS4 didn't have disk drive issues. Hardware, fan, and software issues.

Wow, the Xbone is in trouble. Playstation 4 didn't have this much issue during launch. Whats up with Microsoft? I hope they're doing something to Fix the Xbone. I'm going to inform all my 1,578 friends on facebook about Xbone hardware issue and inform them that Playstation 4 hardware is doing fine.

Sony fanboys are trying really hard to make it look like the XBO is having as many problems as the PS4. It's not even close. Keep trying though.

The only positive about this is that we know it is a drive malfunction which is NOT a console design problem like RROD was. If it becomes a big problem MS can find another BluRay drive supplier like they did with the DVD drives in the OG Xbox switching from Philips to Thompson's then finally to the more reliable BenQ drives.
