I don't think shooters are ever again going to reach the heights that UT2K4 did.
Why compare Overwatch to UT2004 instead of the new Unreal Tournament?
I guess since it hasn't fully been released yet and is still under heavy development, it'd be unfair to compare it to a game that's more polished and fully released. New UT looks and plays great though.

Lol I'm still having a ton of fun with the pre-alpha UT.
UT2004 is my favorite FPS and I'm calling BS on 109 maps out of the box. Maybe now... probably a thousand now. But at launch... nope.
It did, it had alot of content.
The problem was... 90% of that content went unplayed and it was mediocre... people played the same hand full of maps... the massive assault mode was just a gimmick that never really took.
Still its brah being butthurt because doom has flopped for being mediocre.
Not to mention, how much longer it takes to develope games now, and the fact that UT2k4 just took from predocessors and kept adding.
I don't see any modern shooter launching with anywhere near the same ammount of modes/content that the older shooters did.... simply because of production requirements now. That and many are going for the "less is more" approach.
but hey! a check list of content that goes largely ignored is so much more important.
