It's only a rumor, but it seems very specific--and we all know how Microsoft is about keeping things quiet (Halo 3, Elite, Zune, 360, etc). 

I'm hoping it'll be quite substantial -- not $30 or something crap like that. Unless it is, I would very much like to get a bargain bin 60GB PlayStation 3 this year.

I wish there was a price drop in September. I want to pick one up when Halo 3 comes out--but I guess I'll wait until November.

my birthday is mid august

and i don't want to get a console knowing a price drop (or some more efficient, quieter model) is right around the corner 

yet... i want a next gen console mainly for multiplayer games... which it doesn't seem like there are that many on the ps3

this makes my decesion to buy a ps3 a little easier perhaps... until they announce their price drop (or raise)

they were very slick... first they introduced new models with bigger hdds in order to Raise the price before they drop it... brilliant

Now you're talking. That -- along with games like Lost Odyssey, Gears of War, Bioshock, Halo 3, Forza Motorsport 2, Mass Effect and Too Human -- would really seal the deal of an Xbox 360 this year.

They can already sell plenty of consoles on Halo 3's back, a price-drop afterwards would get another surge for the holidays. It's a smart move.

Not going to happen. The Core is MS's driving force. It will impact them in the long run---in a positive way, but in a negative way for us gamers.  

 I wonder if this will steal Wii's thunder, this is an interesting race. This holidays will be interesting indeed, Sony and Nintendo will probably come up with a few surprises as well, although it does look good for the xbox360.

I disagree, a 360 thats less than a Wii = steal! All you need is a $199 core + $40 memory card and you can get your game on.

Nah, it can't. Thats the whole point of the wii when you try to put them shoulder to shoulder with the other systems it doesn't quite add up. MS is doing the smart thing though, gettin as much money off the hardcores with halo and gtaiv bfore the price drop then try for the casuals over the holidays.

I don't think sales will take too much of a hit, but they weren't stellar anyway so that just means more stock to push out when Halo 3 arrives.

My one concern is that the gaming division of MS is bleeding money and it was doing ok, dropping the price...cuttin the chances of making a profit this gen in that division or prolonging the time til when it occurs could do more harm than good to the 360. So Peter Moore...who killed my dream...don't mess it up.

Granted, but $199 for a next-gen, HD ready console is pretty damn good--if true. If a $199 console can play GTAIV and Halo 3, Sony and Nintendo will be in for some trouble.

Crafting a response to this is hard, but I'll try point by point:

MS is in no way stupid, they are an extremely successful company.

You cannot kill the successor to the best selling console in history (PS2) during its launch, it's impossible. Hence why the dip in PS3 sales now is causing all this doom and gloom talk, it was selling well on name alone before. 

The Wii craze would still have occurred, see: PS3 and Wii sales.

Which company isn't greedy.  MS was in the red the first year xbox 360 came out.  But they were not force to drop there price because demand was still good.  Sony on the other hand, will most likely have to drop there prices this fall due to lack of demand and the possibility of MS and nintendo dropping the prices of there console.

I can see them lowering it any less then $100. there is no way it will just get a $50 drop. If PS3 drops $100 it is still a $500 system compared to a $300 360. Even if PS3 does drop price by $100 it would still cost more then the Elite with no price drop at all. So I see Wii and 360 leaving the PS3 in the dust this holiday season.

If the premium drops to $300 USD the Wii's price point may not be as big anymore. Let's hope that SONY announces a price drop relatively soon now.

I think a $50 price drop would make a lot of sense.  The core drops to $249 which puts it at a direct price point with the Wii.  The pro goes to $349, and the elite drops to $429 which is now in direct competition with the PS3.

$429 elite + $179 HD DVD = $598

PS3 = $599

Wi-fi would be *really* nice with the revision, but I could see that pissing some people off.

Maybe they'll go crazy and slash them all by $100.  That would put the X360 in a nearly untouchable place.  I can't see anyone buying a $600 PS3 when you can get a $200 360.

I suppose if 360 price is cut, PS3 would be doomed totally, not that now it does fine, but imagine if that happened
