You don't need characters that look like girls to acheive the same result.

What does that have to do with their appearance? Why not be emotional and manly in appearance?

By the way, nice article there. I always thought that the old FF characters made more sense in appearance than the current crop of FF heroes.

good point :D yeah I agree...like Kratos, he is manly and emotional. but i think that the reason the FF characters are more femenine is because the female body is more aesthetically pleasing. When ever I have to do nude model drawings of males, I always give them some femenine features because it makes the picture look better. A rough Marcus Fenix face is all good for games but for artistic reasons, you want the softer "cloud strife' look.

From how you are wording it, you make it seem that being rugged goes hand and hand with emotionless.

If anything, the links and the original intention of this thread is based on appearance, not emotions. The characters shown in the articles are well developed characters to begin with so I don't see what's the issue.

The art direction, story, and charcters in the Final Fantasies have gotten so lame and boring, I don't have any urge to play any of them at all. I absolutely hate FF10, FF10-2, and FF12 because it's gotten so rediculous with character looks.

The manliest one is Auron....he's also the only good character Square Enix has put out since Cloud used to be a dude in the 90s.

The male FF protagonist don't look like females to me at all. Considering the flavor of artistic direction and the actual female protagonist featured in the same titles, I think it's really obvious which is which when it comes to sex.

The fact that so many people act like they look like females kind of worries me more than the subject at hand...

I don't think it's an issue with male characters in FF games being androgynous. If anything, it's an issue where male characters are portrayed as simply being too feminine in appearance. I understand it's a matter of artistic direction but to be quite frank, it just seems too out of place to put characters that look like they walked out of a beauty parlor and put them in a monster slaying setting. However, I will concede that it does work at a certain level.

God, I hope so. I did like FF9 though. It was a lot better than the newer ones. Only a few characters had stupid costumes.

These are fictional worlds, it's not really out of place, b/c the "place" defines itself imho. It's not just FF either it's the vast majority of JRPGs sharing this view on male protagonist, and it really comes down to the art style.

Artstyle argument....well its a really repetitive art-style. (anime that is) Except for a few truly great male protaganists (Guts, Domon Kasshu, Gene Starwind and Spike) they are all emotional wimpy wrecks. and they look the part.

Look at Kratos. as manly as it gets but he evokes emotion definately.

personally I would rather have a character with emotions and character development over a character who is just a mindless killing machine...

What does that have to do with their appearance? Why not be emotional and manly in appearance?

By the way, nice article there. I always thought that the old FF characters made more sense in appearance than the current crop of FF heroes.

The art direction, story, and charcters in the Final Fantasies have gotten so lame and boring, I don't have any urge to play any of them at all. I absolutely hate FF10, FF10-2, and FF12 because it's gotten so rediculous with character looks.

You sir speak the truth.... I couldt agree with you any more.   Everything after FF7 to me has been trash, and as a PS3 owner I don't have much hope for square changing there characters for FF13 so....

well if it makes you any happier, the main character in ffxiii really is a girl.

God, I hope so. I did like FF9 though. It was a lot better than the newer ones. Only a few characters had stupid costumes.

check out the trailers, it stars a girl named lightning(or thunder, i forget). it looks like square took a new approach: instead of starring a femanine dude, star a girl.

The male FF protagonist don't look like females to me at all. Considering the flavor of artistic direction and the actual female protagonist featured in the same titles, I think it's really obvious which is which when it comes to sex.

I did state that it works on a certain level but, as I said, there are people who think and believe that strong monsters should be killed by equally able people. While the setting of FF (And 99% of other JRPGS) justify the existence of feminine males killing giant monsters, it still doesn't mean that the majority of people playing these games can take it as seriously. Hell, I don't take it seriously. Then again, I don't play games to be serious.

If you like it that's fine, I admit it's part of the art style, but to me, impractical clothing is impractical. No way around it. I could understand more if they weren't fighting, but comon. I love anime, but I can't stand the clothing, for either gender. Royalty don't wear pink miniskirts and warriors don't not wear armor. Sorry, but that's just me. And overdone hairstyles are annoying.

I found this part of somebody's comment for part 1...

"A friend told me in Japan the guy that looks the most like a girl is considered cool."

Have you ever noticed how girls like to hang out with guys that look like girls? Its like a college fad or something. I suppose thats what Metro means.

OK, so I don't have to worry about being attracted to what I think is a woman then learn it has a penis

What and some of the art style found in western RPGs isn't repetitive? That's a horrid way to approach this topic.

Another horrid way to approach this topic is to make some massive generalization that they're all "emotional wimpy wrecks".

metro =/= androgynous.

metro guys can be manly.

androgynous guys are never manly.

America, I'm glad to say hasn't followed Japan's suit. Women here still like men (majority) Which I think is good, because I don't want to have to make myself appear like an estrogen-pumped sucker.

Western artstyle has no one fixed 'style' its far more varied than anime so yes. Western art is nowhere near as repetitive.

Practical to what? This isn't reality, it's a fictional world created by people as they see fit. Your practicality isn't part of the design. It's fine they you don't like it, I never expect everyone to like it.

Overdone and over the top presentation is just part of manga style art, you either take it or leave it. Your choice.

don't most 18-25 males look like girlish  all skinny looking and without the good looks these days (except for me). So whats the problem?
