Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter has expressed concern over the future of Sony's long-rumoured PSP2 handheld, stating that the manufacturer has missed its opportunity.

In a NowGamer interview, Pachter explained that Sony may find it hard to keep up with the rest of the handheld market going forward.

"I'm not sure Sony are going to keep up," Pachter explained, "they may have missed their opportunity. They went down the portable music player route 30 years ago, and they've now conceded that market completely to Apple. When Sony went from a television and portable music company, to being a console company, they should have seen the market for a handheld, and they pretty much conceded that market to Nintendo when the Gameboy came out."

"Someone should give them a time machine to go back and fix all of this."

Pachter continued, "I think Sony has carved out a niche for themselves, that isn't as big as they originally thought, which is the over 13 crowd. They've given up the young end of the market to Nintendo and the middle part of the market to iPhone and iPod Touch. I just don't know if there is a market for a pure gaming device anymore. Someone should give them a time machine to go back and fix all of this before it happened."

I don't see much going for the PSP2 unless Sony does something radically different and price it cheaper than the 3DS. Link.

Its all in the software. You can't just make hard to see hard to hear PS2 games.

You need true portable software.

Looks that way. We know that Pachter always predicts the opposite of what happens. PSP2 will have a great future ahead of it. :P

Patcher has prooven to be reliable at guessing things amiright guys? :p Seriously I think Sony has as much chance with the PSP2 as they did with the PSP, as long as they give it the proper support and don't pidgen hole themselves wasting cash and a useless disc format bring there A game to the handheld market I can't see there being enough room for both PSP2 and 3DS to thrive. It's going to come down to alot of factors besides hardware and software. Price and timing are going to be huge as well, they come out sooner they have to deal with what they can tech out at that time, if they come out later they better be able to shove the 3DS to the side when it comes to quality and cost.

just bring a psp2+phone and it would bring a whole new door for Sony.

that would give the iphone and the 3DS a run for their money.

The PSP2 will still be a hit... Sure it won't reach 3Ds status but it will put up solid numbers i'm sure.

Did he just say that Sony messed up in the gaming market when the gameboy came out?! People listen to this guy? . Anyway, I think Sony could pull it off, but they need to announce it soon and have it out by next fall at the latest.

To be honest I really feel that the PSP2 will be integrated with Android and will be a phone as well. Google and Sony are buddies, and it will allow the PSN to be on a phone i.e. Live on Windows phone 7

So they're at fault because they didn't compete with the gameboy when it came out? Correct me if I'm wrong, but the technology wasn't quite ...

If the rumor proves true and it comes packaged with android as the OS then the 3DS is done. UNLESS the phone companies dont want that product nowhere on their servers and it comes locked to a paticular carrier. In that case then the 3DS will own them (even with that high price point). Speaking of price point how does a handheld cost as much as a console (if the pricing stays the same with the conversion)

what did you think would happen

even if sony did a handheld

theres no way it would win the war

to all who claim psp 2 would be better then 3ds , or looking bright -referin to 2nd poster ahead of tc

--- why dont you take a look at history

the history has repeated it self on many occasions

1 -handhelds --nintendo came first dominated set the standard -not the graphics or the well fancy stuff they just dedicated to games

price was always cheaper then compititors

battery life was always higher

if a black and white gameboy can beat a color not to mention 32 bit/vs 8 bit gg

it can do anything

sony didnt miss any oppertunities because that wont ever happen just because sony was able to take nintendo for a few yrs prior to wii

dont mean they can just come in and steal a market nintendo has dominated since 90s

, for psp to even take off ---it needs unique games not just console ports , and remakes

it needs somthing like what ds offers -variety for all audiences

fpses dont really seam to take off on handhelds

pretty much because those are played by consoles most of the time

and thats why they made tetris nintendogs electrplankton pokemon trauma center -which was made for wii lateron

also hotel dusk from dawn elite beat agents , all these unique titles for one brand to go along with monopoly uno etc stuff which you hardly find on consoles

,,

sony dont offer much different

not to mention making many mistakes past compitors made before they should have learned but i guess you can not teach an old dog new tricks

you dont believe me

why did gg fail-low battery life and pricing more then the gb-psp-lower battery life higher pricing then ds at launch still is for the psp go which i will refuse to get into the big mistake there

games library has to be different then that of the consoles -again game gear mostly had genesis titles/sms titles

psp has at least 1-3 iterations from a series started on the playstation 2 and 3

many being remakes

so yes i believe sony should stick to trying to get their console back on their feet before doing another handheld

-or stick to psp at least its got some sales in , you dont want to make another mistake and make more people leave

patcher should rephrase that, its not because of oppertunity was there

its really the matter of nintendo doing what the know best

not like they been bad at consoles looking at nes snes and wii ,, and the fact that they were never last in a console generation dispite gc low sales

and again history repeated it self for consoles

graphics took a back seat ! the most powerful console-ps3 is dead last atm

the least powerful is out front by 40 million or more-wii

so ya ! sony should take my advice or their own i should say they practically put the ball in nintendos hands

by teaching them that power is not gonna sell a console

dreamcast failed to pass it and xbox barely escaped

-lets look at the chart

for consoles

gen 3-

nintendo

sms

atari 2600

gen 4

snes

genesis

jaguar

tg16

gen 5-start of ps1

ps1

n64

saturn

gen 6-last gen

ps2

xbox

gc

dreamcast

gen 7 so far

1-wii

2 360

3 ps3

handhelds

gen 3 was the first handheld release

gameboy

game gear-thats the main competitor there is 11 others that failed withint the gb gbc gba and ds years

gbc

-im not sure of the competitor withthis one

gba

ngage

zodiac tapwave

ds

psp

next gen 3ds is coming

no announcment of a psp 2

so ya, right now nintendos got a good future for handhelds and a nice pick up of co nsole market ahead of them

Has Patcher ever been right?

I wonder if Sony's going to design this behemoth (tech-wise) again with a huge price tag. They really can't afford the 3DS' price :P

If sony makes a pure gaming handheld with good support from devs at a reasonable price then I will be getting it. This dude doesn't know what he is talking about.

Well what ever the Psp 2 is I can not wait to see the design on this baby. Ive always been behind sony, and if the psp2 makes great strides then I will for sure be getting it. Im just hoping they finally take into account 2 analog stick that function more smoothly.

What i don't get is why Sony doesn't release a cellphone, by Ericsson, which can be connected with a portable hardware to play games (just name this the PSP2).

The phone would only have to be a screen, much like the iPhone, while the portable hardware that you put that into would have the other features (D-Pad, analogs, all sorts of buttons and memory stick plugs, etc).

The Cell processor could be used for that since it scales greatly with added processors and is strong enough. So the Ericsson phone would probably use one Cell, the portable hardware would have another (if necessary, maybe 1 Cell is enough for a portable game device).

Of course that it should be sold in a package with both the cellphone and the portable PSP2 hardware. The challenge would be how to make this machine small and not too expensive... but it would be a strong portable console (way stronger than the PS2 at least), wouldn't be a nuisance because it only plays games, and you could alternate between phone mode and game mode by just plugging the cellphone inside it.
