I lol'd. There are probably netbooks out there that would fair better playing some MMO's online... and giving you a complete PC platform... for less money that its probably worth.
This is definately intersting news and gives me some hope on the state of the gaming industry as a whole really.
Panasonic obviously percieves that the video games market, particularly the handheld gaming market has not reached a saturation point(This is on the faith that this hardware really is not vapoureware) that another player can enter into it and provide a device to compete with Nintendo, Sony and Apple, or to a lesser extend an alternative or complimentary device.
Has Linux support so that is a plus for many here who would prefer it over Apple and Microsoft's offerings.
Panasonic may show the same level of vigour as Sony and Microsoft when they entered the games industry with aggresive prices, wooing publishers with games support etc..

Apparently Panasonic has been working itself into a frenzy over a new handheld video game console designed solely around the concept of taking MMORPGs with you everywhere you go -- like you weren't already wasting too much of your life. The makers of the ill-fated 3DO are returning to the gaming world with a portable system dubbed "The Jungle."The clamshell device will allegedly sport a super high-resolution display, features a full QWERTY keyboard along with what looks like a touch sensitive d-pad and button arrangement, and may run atop a custom Linux build. The Jungle will also apparently sport a mini HDMI port, a micro USB port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. To our eyes, the system looks a little on the clunky side, with a definite air of something out of Nokia's N-Gage line -- not a good thing for a 2010 device. Alongside the system itself, Panasonic will launch a Battlestar Galactica title for the device, and a web show called Online Underground.
We're digging up more details right now, but the company (actually an offshoot of Panasonic called Panasonic Cloud Entertainment) has already set up shop with a site and a few teaser videos. Check out the mysterious new handheld in another pic and some videos after the break (including a look at the Battlestar Galactica title), and stay tuned as we unearth the full story on the Jungle.
We'd heard rumblings that the console would make its way to an MTV show, and sure enough, the Jungle has shown up on Rob Dyrdek's Fantasy Factory. Rob apparently is making a "jingle" for the unreleased device, which looks rather huge in the hands of the skateboarder. Obviously Panasonic is desperately trying to create some viral hype around the device (leaks to a few blogs and this MTV appearance), but we're pretty unimpressed thus far. Maybe the jingle will convince us. If you've got video -- send it our way!mythrol
not to sound excited but........
remember that zelda game that panasonic made
Vader993
That was Philips, not Panasonic. That was CD-i, not 3DO.
Now most importantly....WHAT GAMES WILL THIS HAVE
Awe, I hope it doesn't fail miserably.
They got the clamshell. They should've made it dual screen.
LovePotionNo9
No thanks.
Idiots. Pitting a brand new handheld against even just the frickin PSP, Sony would wreck Panasonic... but that's in a world where Nintendo, who owns approximately 70% of the handheld market doesn't exist. In the world where they do exist, Sony gets wrecked and Panasonic will get wrecked even harder.
Poor choice by them.

About 10 years ago if you said to someone another handheld will take 30% of the market share from Nintendo handhelds they will say you are crazy after how Nintendo handhelds slaughtered SEGA, Bandai, SNK and NOKIA handhelds with more than 99% of the market share :P so you should show some respect to PSP :P.
They have recovered from the 3DO, it seemz.
waltefmoney
some companies have known to recover from some unsuccessful ventures and products.
Nintendo didn't do so well with the GameCube.
Early on many Apple products flopped and didn't sell well and really hurt them financially
Sony with their BetaMax, and PSPGO:P
Microsoft also made some not so popular products- Vista(Personally I like it)
If these companies can expand the userbase and market of Video Games by possibly getting more demographs interested like what Apple and Nintendo are doing then that's great.
mah boi lool, the videos on you tube are greatremember that zelda game that panasonic made

Damn, I mixed them up. Anyway Nintendo seriously needs to hire the people that made Faces of Evil.
its got a diffrent aim than the other handhelds so i wouldnt rule it out.Panasonic are smart they aint directly competing with the competition IF they could potentially pull someone like Blizzard into bringing WoW out on it then potentially it has a good chance in being a sucess.
All they need is backing off one of the bigger MMO's and it could be a good shot at getting a market none of the others tried to take.If its smaller than a laptop and can fit in your pocket it has potential for the people like me who wouldnt mind playing MMO's but just cant cause they are busy doing other things and could potentially bring outa new userbase who never thought of handhelds.
Does anyone know if an say HP Mini could pass the WoW test?I lol'd. There are probably netbooks out there that would fair better playing some MMO's online... and giving you a complete PC platform... for less money that its probably worth.
foxhound_fox
A handheld designed for MMOs? Isn't this a bit weird? If I'm home I rather play my MMOs on a computer. So the only excuse for it to exist is to have it instead of a notebook. But even then, since it's made for MMOs, I need an abo of some mobile phone provider to be able to go online oO No need for that, sorry oO

[QUOTE="dercoo"]
Yes, now the PSP2 can't be in last place this handheld gen:P
dercoo
LOL guess SONY is the only one benefiting from this :P
And SW
Now lemmings, cows, sheeps, and hermits can unit in the basing of 1 pathetic system.
UNITED BY HATE8)
I thought worms were our main enemy.that is one ugly machine, people normally go out to net cafe's or stay home and play mmo's, that genre is one were you need to speed a lot of time to get benefits, its not a pick up and play format, like a handheld is supposed to be. This will fail within a week. Panasonic should just bring out a next gen console system earlier than the rest if they want to be a serious contender, not that thing.
I see this working more with diablo style RPG's than WoWbecause lack of mouse means this will not play WoW (unlessa mouse addon is avaiible) However there is something i see i like, and that is teh 2 analogue sticks (or are they D-pads?) if soo, i say drop the keyboard part, and make it more controler like and that way you can have game slike CS:S or or GeoW on the go (obviously not those titles). Then that would make it more popular in the west, and have lots of JRPG's for it in the east.
As a MMO-only device it could work. I mean there are gazillions of MMO gamers who don't have time for other games at all.
However, MMO's aren't very handheld friendly if I recall correctly.
Miyamoto's reaction when he saw the picture of it:
misiufraggle
Now how bout Iwata's and Regies reaction? LOL
A 99USD price point, and free 3g connectivity, plus a whole host of potential casual MMO titles, and maybe... it'll break 100 units sold...musicalmac
Yeah right. If it was $99 and free 3G I'd buy one. Who WOULDN"T buy one at that price... forget about games just to have free 3G and a mobile device.
The reality is it will surely be $200, and probably more like $400. Plus the compatibility of PC games will probably be a joke. I wonder if it will have any platform specific games at all besides access to MMO's. It won't have any other multiplats. Who in their right minds is going to develop a game specifically for somethng called "The Jungle". LOL.
This is not the way for Panasonic to get back into gaming. The 3D0 was a flop. But it could have succeeded if markketed properly and if not for Sony Playstation. This thing is just doomed from the start.
