A few weeks ago, I asked for information regarding the epic battle betwixt the PS3 and the 360. I wrote this essay for my english 11 final. I am a 360 fanboy, so this essay is written from that point of view. I respect the PS3, but I prefer the 360.

Things are changing. No longer does the American youth's favorite pastime involve running or throwing, at least not in the physical world. The youth are flocking to the virtual world of video gaming. Collinearly, the picture of a typical "gamer" is also changing. One might picture an overweight slacker who dwells in the darkest corners of his parent's basement, pouring hours of his life into dumb games, rather than into a job or a girlfriend. That description may be true for the gamers of yesteryear, but it is very false for the gamer of today. Yes, videogames are innately nerdy. That is very true. Yet, in recent years, videogames have become chic. Videogames are now more accessible and approachable for people of all walks of life.
The console (meaning non-PC and non-handheld gaming device) market is comprised of three companies; Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft. Each of these companies produces and manufactures their own consoles and develops their own first party games. A more accurate explanation is that they pay other game developers to make a game solely for their console. There are also many third party game developers, who develop independently, with one or more consoles specifically in mind. Accessories are developed directly by the owner companies.
The biggest rivalry in the gaming industry right now exists betwixt Sony and Microsoft. Sony's PlayStation 3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360 are considered to be the muscle of this generation of game consoles. Nintendo's Wii is aimed less at hardcore gamers and more at the general market, so it is generally set apart for comparisons.

In a world of bells and whistles, one videogame console stands above all the competitors. This console is Microsoft's Xbox 360. The PlayStation 3, or PS3, is comparable, but far from equal. The PS3 costs more and delivers less. Graphically, the 360 is miles past the PS3. While online gaming is supported by both systems, The 360's Xbox Live is greatly superior then the PlayStation Network, or PSN. The true separation between a good console and a great console is the games. Games are what make or break a videogame system. The Xbox 360 tops the Playstation 3 in that category as well. In most every way the Xbox 360 is greater than The PlayStation 3.

Internally, the Xbox 360 is a stronger system than the PS3. Xenon, 360's central processing unit (or CPU), is based on a custom triple-core PowerPC design by IBM. The Xenon has a floating-point performance but it has a theoretical performance peak of 9.6 billion dot products (binary functions) per second and 115.2 gigaflops. Each of the three CPUs are multithreading capable and are clocked at 3.2 gigahertz. The PS3's CPU, called the Cell also runs at 3.2 GHz but is divided into eight sections (called Power Processing Elements), two of which aren't even used for the game themselves. Game developers are tasked with assigning what each of the PPEs are to do while running a games. This makes developing games for the PS3 notoriously tricky. Hironobu Sakaguchi, creator of the super popular franchise Final Fantasy, was quoted as saying in a recent edition of Electronic Gaming Monthly, "I'm not interested in the PlayStation 3. The machine's architecture is tricky," (Intihar, 38-50) This knock from such a respected entity in the gaming world was a huge blow to the PS3.

In the past, competitive gaming was limited to two or more people sitting next to each other. This left individuals susceptible to face-to-face verbal brutalizing and violent outbreaks by their gaming counterparts. Now, in this day and age, a player can smack talk to someone from across the globe. This is something the Xbox 360 does very well. Xbox Live (XBL) is the near perfect realization of a utopian online community. Using Xbox Live, a player can create his or her online identity. A player can do this by creating a Gamer Tag, which is what is displayed universally through the multiplayer aspect and the non-multiplayer aspects of the Xbox experience. Another feature of Xbox Live is a player's Friends List. The Friends List is a tool that shows what all of your Xbox Live buddies are up to. Playing with people of even skill is quickly achieved when the ability to choose who you play with is added. With Xbox Live, a player can be playing a demo he or she just download for an upcoming game and engaging in a private voice chat with some one who is watching an HD DVD, meanwhile the player is using his or her Windows Live Messenger (which is integrated to your Xbox Live Gamer Tag) to message a friend on to his Windows Live Messenger enabled cell phone. This kind of scenario just isn't possible on the PlayStation Network. Say, a player is playing a game online, and his or her friend sends him or her a message to switch games, so you change disks and join your comrade. One of the problems with the PlayStation Network is that there is not a unified friends list. So say a player meets many people he or she enjoys playing with in one game, and you want to play with them in another game. On Xbox Live, this would be very easy to do, but on the PlayStation Network, a player would have to load the game, check his or her friends list, see what that person is playing, then load the other disk and try to find them. Xbox Live is better in everyway possible compared to the PlayStation Network.

One of the biggest deciding factors for a consumer who is purchasing a videogame console is the price. For fairness, the most expensive retail configurations will be examined. The PlayStation is currently offered in one model. This model comes with a 60 GB hard drive. The Xbox 360 is offered in three retail configurations, but the upper most tier model, called the Xbox 360 Elite, comes with a 120 GB hard drive. Judging from the size of the hard drives, one would assume that the Xbox 360 Elite would cost nearly double then the PlayStation. That is not true. The Xbox 360 Elite costs $479.99. A high price, but seems cheap compared to the 60 GB hard drive PlayStations that costs $600 (www.bestbuy.com). Why would anyone pay over $100 more for an inferior system? It is simply fiscally irresponsible to buy a PlayStation 3. The Xbox 360 has a 51% percent share of the current generation. The PlayStation has only 15%, according to www.NexGenWars.com. The Xbox 360 has more than nearly 11.000,00 units sold, while the PlayStation has a measly 3,000,000 (www.nexgenwars.com).

One thing that the PS3 has that the 360 does not is High Definition movie playback capabilities. The PS3 disks are on the Blu-Ray format, while the 360 disks are on the HD DVD format. The PS3 has a Blu-Ray player built in, which means that a player can play Blu-Ray movies on it as well as games. The Xbox 360 is not burdened with an HD DVD player, but has one available as an add-on. Peter Moore, Vice President of the Interactive Entertainment Devices Division of Microsoft, recently told Electronic Gaming Monthly that it's all about games. "We're not forcing movie technology on game players...It's about games, not movies." (Hsu 12-20) The PlayStation forces a High Definition movie player onto everyone who purchases one, when only a small percentage of people have High Definition TVs. The Xbox 360 lets the consumer choose wither or not to go for High Definition movie playback.
Online gaming and graphics do not mean anything if the player does not have games to take of advantage of them. Good games are what move consoles, and the Xbox 360 has quite the library of "Killer Apps". Games that are exclusive to one console only are very important to a consoles success. A shining example of an amazing exclusive is Gears of War. Gears was released in the fourth quarter of 2006, and its sale boosted the 360s sales deep into the black. In the third quarter of 2006, only 0.9 million 360s were shipped, but in the fourth quarter, 4.4 million units were shipped (www.xbox.com). That shows how powerful the Holiday Season and how important exclusive titles are. In recent months, the PS3 has lost many of its exclusives. Just recently, one of Sony's most beloved franchises went multiplatform. Metal Gear Solid 4 was just announced to be coming to the 360 with exclusive content aimed for the 360.
Later this year, September 25 to be exact, the Xbox 360 will burry the PlayStation 3 for good, when the long awaited AAA title, Halo 3 is released. The first game set in the "Haloverse" was a launch title for the original Xbox, back in 2001. Many hold that Halo: Combat Evolved saved the Xbox from certain peril. Halo:CE is still held as one of the most perfect First Person Shooters ever made. Halo 2, released in November of 2004, sold 1.25 million copies in its first day, making the most grossing entertainment opening ever. It remained the most played Xbox Live title for 2 years, until it was usurped by Gears of War. Halo 2 revolutionized the way people thought about competitive and online gaming. Now Halo 3 is fixing to do the same. Halo 3 is reported to already have an astounding 6 million preorders. It will go multi-platinum within minutes of its release. The PS3 does not have any exclusives that can compete with H3. It will truly be the PS3 killer.
The Xbox 360 is a shining example of what a next generation gaming console truly should be. Although the Playstation is an adequate example, Microsoft's behemoth is far above Sony's little toy. From the multiplayer experience to the user interface, the Xbox 360 is simply the better machine. Many people made the incorrect choice of investing into the inferior system, but many more made the correct choice.

Being overly biased in a forum is the way it works, but your not supposed to be biased when writing a paper, and you'll probably get a low grade for that, maybe for just being so biased :|

Personally, I would have never written a paper on videogames or videogame consoles. However, this paper could've been pretty interesting if it were on the sociology of videogames and their impact on North American culture, et cetera. The reader, presumably your highschool/middleschool teacher, probably doesn't care much about how Xbox Live is better than Playstation Network.

step out side guys, holy s***. Yeah videogames are more popular than before, but the average guy is still going outside to play sports, go to movies, and watch MTV all day rather than play videogames. And news flash, gamers are still seen as complete losers (most of them are actually) and the average guy will play some Halo or Madden maybe once every 2 weeks.

i have to disagree about ure info regarding the performance of both machines. which one is more powerful is very debateable. the figures u have quoted (which i assume come from MS and sony) are both complete and utter rubbish. in a real world app (like a game), both consoles would be lucky to reach 1/5th of those figures. u know the saying of lies, dam lies and statistics? also any gap between them is not likely going to be massive.

i do agree that the 360 has the best games at the mo though.

also the FF guy wasnt exactly very happy with MS either due to their complete failure to compete in japan. not exactly a positive response.

also did u mention that Xbox live costs money to use (unless ure a silver user of course) while the PS service is completly free? i honestly cant say which is better since i dont use either service but its an important point.

i find it strange that you argue that video games are now chic and are more accessible and approachable for ppl of all walks of life but then discount the wii which epitomizes this the best. if anything the 360/ps3 have made gaming less accessible and approachable.

Obviously it was a persuasive essay, thus, it need to be biased. And omg, I mistyped 'wrote'. I should be shot directly in the face. I got a 94 on this paper btw. verde622
That defies logic. Not that your essay isn't opinionated and decently written for high school level, but it reads more like an article on 1up.com than an educational essay. I wouldn't have dared to hand in something like this when I was in school. I guess your teacher appreciated the risk.

In the past, competitive gaming was limited to two or more people sitting next to each other. This left individuals susceptible to face-to-face verbal brutalizing and violent outbreaks by their gaming counterparts.

People getting attacked by their gaming buddies? You come from a violent part of the world my friend, very violent.

I found the statisics from wikipedia. Of course I used stats that would make the 360 look better, that was the whole point for the paper. I excluded the Wii from comparison because it was only a 6 page paper. The assingment we were given was to write a 1250 word research paper on any topic we wanted, so instead of doing on some tired topic I decided to talk about video games. Sorry if you don't like it, but try to understand that I am not trying to insult anyone. Like I said, I like the PS3, its fun as hell, but I needed to take a stand for my paper and I like the 360 more.

lol, your first two points contradict each other.  First you say kids now sit around in dark rooms playing games instead of running around having fun, and then you say today's gamer is no longer a guy who sits in a dark room and plays video games instead of getting a job or girlfriend.  B at best

Like the word "betwixt" huh?

This article was VERY biased. Since when is the 360 "MILES ahead of the PlayStation 3 graphically"?

Also, the technical jargon you tried to spew was completely bull. Even ignoring all the numerical errors, you said that the Cell consists of 8 PPEs. This is false. It has one PPE, and 8 additional SPEs, one of which is dedicated to the OS and one of which has been disabled to increase manufacturing yields.

There are many other errors in this article as well, but I won't cover all of them. You leave out the fact that Sakaguchi's lastest games are being published by MS, which would make any comment that is supportive of the ps3 an obvious conflict of interest, and you ignore the fact that he is one of the only devs who have spoken against the ps3 in an area other than sales/price.

reread that particular passage. I create the image of the alienated gamer only to introduce the new hip gamer.

Sometimes its better to not be outright mean. The essay isn't written extremely well, but its not garbage either. However we usually refrain from personal insults on these forums. Or at least that's the aspiration, heh

And then you say MGS4 is going to the 360 with exclusive content? That's an outright lie.

I assume you meant GTAIV, but this is a composition paper. Mistakes should not be made.

I find it very hard to believe he received anything more then a D level area grade. I mean, it's structure is okay, but what a wonkey subject matter. I would have been sent to the principal's office for thirty lashing had I turned in such un-orthodox essay.

I think you need to organize your thoughts better. in the first paragraphs you need to state your view and the reasons for your view. In the following paragraphs you should present facts and arguements that support these reasons. instead it seems like there's not clear structure. you hope from topic to topic without a clear central theme.

Don't worry about these guys man. They'll criticize your paper all day long, but I'd love to see an example of their writing. Such is the nature of the internet. It took courage to post your essay up here. And I think you're completely nuts for writing a paper about this, but in a good way. Haha.

Ok...i cant believe someone would wright a paper on videogames for a FINAL but i guess originality counts. But your essay has so many flaws, your wrighting an opinionated essay so your giving your opinion, correct? With opinionated essay's your supposed to pursuade the reader with vaild points in an arguement or in this case a comparision and thats were your essay falls flat on its face. Basicaly, it hold no water, talking about specs and how powerful a system is is borring, you instantly lost a readers attention right there not only that but your not giving any strong arguements for both sides (since your writing about the ps3 vs x-box 360) With a topic like this you shoulda had fun with it, used sarcasm, humour, and non-technical facts and it would have been fine. With that said i hope you get a decent grade.

I could very well see the bias. It was okay, but not always exactly true. Not that it matters, your english teacher probably couldn't care less.

Yes, its harder to be serious for a not so strong topic than to be sarcastic, ever read a Modest Proposal? Its a famous essay thatt was written along time ago...but the point is he uses sarcasm to get point across to the reader and doesnt hammer them with facts about proverty and starvation (which is what he is trying to get across).

It was alright but the your bias opinion is so obvious. I understand you want it to be persuasive but you should come with more actual facts to make the argument persuasive. It would be persuasive for someone who doesn't know gaming but for someone who does it comes off as extremely bias and misinformed.

But good job with the grade on it.

Nice parenthetical documentation :P

Admittedly, I've done essays for school regarding video games also... I did my thesis paper in Civics on the debate of "Is video game violence affecting children?" and an English paper on Shigeru Miyamoto's life and achievements. Your essay seems well written, even if I don't necessarily agree with every single aspect, hope you get/got a good grade on it.
