Is it actually 8/10 or is it just a child reviewer impressed by it?

I've reached grumpy old man stage where I'm suspicious of twenty-somethings who almost certainly haven't played the earlier ones, hmmm....

Can't blame you.

We should have a Zoomer exclusion zone.

I always assumed reviewers would be older than me. Like, I'd be 68 listening to an 83 year old reviewer. I didn't account for the fact that "games reviewer" isn't a real job so they all move on to something else when they hit their 30s...

As a huge fan of RPGs, I get the disappointment. Having said that, I don't think every game has to depend on level grinding. It can be refreshing to know I can simply avoid a battle when I don't have to depend on battling again and again to get stronger.

I'm hoping there are other incentives to participating in battles vs avoiding them to move through an area faster. Who knows? It could be a step in the right direction or a major annoyance. We won't really know until we play it for ourselves.

Is level grinding a relic of 1980s RPGs like the original Dragon Quest? Yes, the only way to get stronger in early RPGs is to level grind and it took me a few weeks to finish Dragon Quest (called Dragon Warrior when released on the NES in 1989) because I got tired after one hour of fighting and defeating the same enemies. No skill involved, as the only way to defeat enemies and bosses is to reach a certain level and be equipped with the best or right weapons, armour, or magic spells.

Playing a RPG without level grinding or the ability to avoid battles is quite refreshing.

Played the first hour of Paper Mario, and so far I really like it. It's incredibly charming and looks fantastic!

Yeah man I hope so... if we get 3D World & the 64/Sunshine/Galaxy bundle, I'll be ecstatic.

I'll be surprised if we get Wind Waker HD on Switch tbh. But one can hope.

Paper Mario 64 and TTYD never had that problem though. You could grind, but it was never a necessity.

A lot of journalists seem to think they're Final Fantasy characters fighting Shinra. Kotaku had a nervous breakdown with half it's staff leaving when they ordered to write about games. Then pretended their boss was the devil, because he told them to do something.

I saw some gameplay. The combat looks nice at first but after like 30 times you would just wanna pay coins to get help (increase time, get more turns, let Toad reshuffle). I played Paper Mario on N64 and Wii and those are just way better than this new release. I never doubt Nintendo's aesthetic and visualistic appeal so usually I just forego those. Wouldn't pay more than $40 currently.

If I had to list one complaint it is how every damn character wants to talk your ear off. Rather than a "hi, how are you" a dissertation is what you get. The visuals of the origami figures, items, trophies, etc.., are extremely appealing. Unless it starts later on, I am thoroughly enjoying not needing stickers and battle cards. That was just a royal p.i.t.a. from the last game(s).

the vocal minority always speaks up about graphics, high production values. hyping AAA games.

nintendo games are usually gameplay focused. its hard to hype gameplay. its easy to hype graphics.

The more I see about Origami King, the more disappointed I get.

I think I've seen enough to know it's not the Mario RPG game I want. I am sad.

@KBFloYd: Nintendo games, the ones with a lot of colors on screen will always attract people that don't even play video games. Bet you 1/3rd of people who got AC haven't even heard of Call of Duty, and you gotta be real out of it to not having heard of this cash cow. When your games attract people who've never even held a controller before, of course you will outsell intense af titles such as TLOU2, a game made for gamers that actually play video games as a hobby. Its like comparing Doom Eternal to your yearly regurgitated POS known as Call of Duty. CoD will obviously outsell it, but to whom? A bunch of dudebro casuals, not actual gamers.

are you serious? last of us 2 is a serious for gamers video game? its just as casual as mario. anybody can play it and beat it.

the only difference between last of us and mario is that last of us has proffesional actors voice acting and motion capturing their characters. and they have a good story writers. and are on a semi powerful console.

the game is more expensive to make but in terms of being for casuals or hardcore gamers its the same thing.

i actually think call of duty multiplayer is a hardcore gamer game. more than any singleplayer game.

singleplayer games now a days is made for casuals. well except souls games.

imo

People have hands and fingers, so they obviously can play and beat TLOU2 like they can beat Animal Crossing. That wasn't the point. The soccer mom playing your average Nintendo game such as Pokemon, Mario or Animal Crossing, do you see her even considering getting into TLOU2? Its not happening. Its not for that crowd, the casual smartphone gamers.

There's this other casual side of gamers, the ones that are into NFL, NBA, yearly CoD, Fortnite and all of this cancer, but they ain't getting TLOU2 either because they have no brains, and they'll be riding that hate train and shit on the game because its popular to do so. The sales this game has gotten is from actual gamers that game as a hobby. TLOU2 is a casual's filter.

The story of it all is that a colorful Nintendo game will attract as many casuals as your F2P cashgrab on smartphones. With this kind of audience, it'll always outperform your standard video games, especially the ones that melt snowflakes like TLOU2.

As much as I love Indies, yeah they need to announce the rest of their 2020 lineup at least. There are some rumors that they'll have a Direct or something next week (supposedly focusing on Mario Anniversary etc), so fingers crossed.

Someone above said it quite well about not being a 1980's rpg where you need to grind just to level up. Nintendo has offered more than enough elements of the genre to satisfy most with this entry and IMO it is leaps and bounds ahead of the last 3ds and Wii U offerings.
