All those arguments about PC owners never starting the graphical comparisons seems to flush down the toilet whenver these pro-PC graphics threads come up.
Still, I do love mods.
:( Its dissapointing that the amount and quality of mods is dropping in the last 3 years.... there was a time that there were amazing mods like half life mods but now? I might as well skip the whole thing.dakan45
You shouldn't fell disappointed or offended(not assuming you are either). Almost every mod requires lots of time and devotion to work properly. You may not like it now, but the quality of mods you are used to could return in a few years.
I'm not seeing how this is a graphics thread. All those arguments about PC owners never starting the graphical comparisons seems to flush down the toilet whenver these pro-PC graphics threads come up.

It's always nice seeing some consolites say "lol mods r all crap made by amateurs" when they're the first to fawn over any console game's "user-generated content".Cherokee_Jack
I'm gonna go with this. LBP a platformer with arguably mediocre platforming is one of the best games this gen basically because of this, but oh noes! When you are talking about the PC doing something similar or superior, it sucks.:(

Mods are a huge benefit. Not only do they make mediocre games great (and great games even better), they can add virtually limitless replay value. I've gone through Fallout 3, Oblivion, The Witcher, STALKER, Crysis, etc., done everything there was to do, and mods keep me coming back for more. While a game like Oblivion or Dragon Age may get boring on consoles, it'll keep being updated on PC with both enhancements and content until a sequel is released, keeping it ahead of many newer titles.
I would post screens, but that doesn't show the sheer depth some of these mods allow you to have in gameplay.
Here's another- Mechwarrior: Living Legends (finally a real Mechwarrior game; currently only multiplayer is planned, total conversion mod for Crysis).
Actually that along with Dino crysis are my most anticipated mods
they are making a new mechwarrior, so if this has any material from that or similarities, i'm sure lawsuits will be flying out, it happend with an avp mod for a game ( can't remember which game)Black mesa source is a joke. That mod has been in production for so long that I'm surprised it hasn't been swept under the rug yet. PC gaming has been in a drought for the last year and a half or so. 2010 doesn't look to be anything special either with the exception of Alien vs. Predator and Starcraft 2 (which isn't my kind of game anyway). All this powerful hardware and no games take advantage it... that's the state of PC gaming right now.TheDuffman26yes, true if drought means getting the maximum amount of 8+ exclusives
Didn't the TC knows all mods are crap and lame unless they come to consoles :P Seriously speaking, Mods do have a lot uses :- * sometimes they are better in some ways than the original game (like Fall from Heaven 2 is better than Civilization 4 in many ways and Civilizatio n4 itself got a 9.3 something here, so how could any one who like 4X games pass it up just because it is a mod ? ) * they improve the aspects of the original mod (I remember Equilibrius mod of HoMM IV which greatly balanced all the races and made the game much more fun ) * they give you a taste of game which you liked but didn't had a chance to play something similar again (like Nameless Mod for Deus Ex, the thief mods etc) * those which enhance the original experience by minor amounts by minor amounts like graphics, UI tweaks etc * they allow you to play the game as you want and not as the "developer intends you too". A developer makes a game level design decision based on all the audience and based on the fact it wil appeal to a wider audience. These changes may or may not appeal to you , so you can use mods , if there, to play game as you want and not as the "developer wants" (like the level scaling removal mods for Oblivion) etc .. etc ...naval*most of the time they are buggy and break the game, incomplete, or just model changes that have no real effect on anything. The only things through most of my years as a pc gamer i have liked are community map packs, but very rarely did a real good mod or TC ever came out that did other then change a few things so some stuff looked cooler. Or maybe tweaked a few settings to help balance stuff.

Many of which are overlooked, and there have been some stunning releases this year.

Plenty of games take advantage of the more powerful hardware, hence things like superior multiplats running at higher resolutions, with better framerates.
We have just had no Crysis calibre hardware stressing games. Which isn't a big deal, considering the fact there have been plenty of games on PC released in the last year, amongst it's exclusives.
No mention of The Nameless Mod for Deus Ex in a mod thread?!
I know its an old game but it takes more than 10 hours to complete just one story line in it!
you know, now that i think about it, the biggest annoyance about mods is that
a) there are so many, that it is quite hard to sort through so much, especially when their creators make each of them sound so awesome
b) little mods that make you apply each one XP but can work simultaneously... gar
c) sometimes, the directions on which directories to copy files into are a little vague... hard for someone like me that has only applied mods to like 5 games.
EDIT: and by mods, i also mean skins, textrues bla bla bla along with full conversions though full conversions from my experience are usually easier cause they install themselves :D
b) little mods that make you apply each one XP but can work simultaneously... garbionicle_loverIt''s usually not too hard to merge files involved. I've done it quite a few times with Stalker mods.

Next time I read "PC gamers are arrogant" I'm going to crawl into the corner, curl up in a ball, and cry myself to sleep. This is really horrible, I don't know how someone could say this, honestly, looking at the OP. None of this stuff is worth your scorn, it's legitimate hard work and it's legitimate entertainment that increases the replay value of the product substantially.*yawn*TheOwnerOner

These modders do these wonderfull things, in their own time and for no money. What could be negative about it? I guess its better to release 4 maps and charge for it!Completely free standalone game mods for freespace 2 you should look out for if you are a BSG fan:
Diaspora:
Beyond the Red Line: (Demo out for two years)

I have played red line mod to the death and i like it more than the original game Also about diaspora mod didnt knew about that but after checking out it does look amazing ( actually reinstalling Frespace 2 again now )
Also about some console users that say most mods are crap and worthless guess what there is a site called MODDB where there is a a rating and reviews for each mod so that you dont download the "crappy" ones ( but i guess they will find a way to make something free and often great like mods a negative think yet paying $10 for 4maps is better than having lets say 800maps available for free for a game like crysis over at crymod )
Sureee? while DLC that you paid is good BTW those games are AAA and game of the year, shooter of the year and RTS of the year[QUOTE="adamosmaki"][QUOTE="3sFan"]
There is no need to have mods unless the game is bad or short. Like the games mentioned above.
3sFan
NFS: Shift has no chance against Gran Turismo 5. Black Mesa isn't coming out for a while. Crysis is overrated. That RTS has no chance against Starcraft 2. And theres no point buying games that will be receiving DLC anytime soon as you can just wait for the GOTY editions. Gears 2, Oblivion, Fallout 3, etc.
that is not NFS:Shift.
Soulja Boy doesn't play PC, he plays consoles. Something to think about.

Soulja Boy, you say?
*smashes PC to bits*

And Soulja Boy chickened out from a challenge he set on the internet which was accepted by Screwattack. COOL KID AMIRITE.
MEIN GOTT.The Dear Esther update is looking fantastic!
The original mod is more of an interactive narrative than a game, truly a work of art. It's being redone by a former DICE employee. I can hardly wait for the end result.
hypoty
*thankyou* for bringing this update to my attention.
Dear Esther was amazing, but this is spectacular.
Yeah mods are pretty damn great. I'd say the best ones are mods that fix games and make them more enjoyable in their original form than those that add new content or features.
STALKER becomes not just a great game but a FREAKIN amazing game with OL 2.2. Mods are good.
Biggest advantage of PC?
Consoles are toys
As a young adult, I would find it embarrassing for a young adult to continue to play console games when you can go out and socialize, party, work, buy new gadgets, have family time, etc etc.
Much easier for me to pass off playing some casual games on my laptop on a layover flight than playing call of duty cooped up at home.
