now i know some of you are like wtf are you talking about. well let me get to the point. I am very confused , i am a pc gamer who buy games that come in DVD format, and then im a 360 gamer who buy games in dvd format. now what im very confused about is MS. For instance, games that are PC /360 , why does MS have the right to charge 60.00 when i can buy the game for 50.00. Both using the same format, both are made by the same dev team.

now i know fanboys are going so say well the dev teams needs to get paid for more poly count , HD resolution, sound etc(which makes no sense since pc games been having that for years). So does MS really have a excuse for this? the answer is no. but oh well the fanboys wil find some excuse for them, even thougt the games like bioshock, alan wake, oblivion are the exact same thing for the pc and 360. just pc you get to have mods that are free.

so what are your thoughts?

Because Xbox owners have given MS the green light to be able to charge that amount of games and still sell well.

Oh, and renting games isnt helping to lower that price either.

They suck. Nintendo is making profit... they can afford to take a few hits for the sake of user saisfaction, but no.. they have to charge up to 10 bucks for games it costs them very little to make on VC.

But fear not lems, i'm sure that once their "GFW" label takes over, they'll have no problem raising the price of pc games and charge for mods, maps etc... :)

They have the " right " to charge 60.00 as the consumer has the " right " to refuse.

This is probably a thread in reaction to the Overlord topic, so I will be the first to state it again ; the extra cost is royalties. MS has just as much a right to charge $60 as Sony, or Nintendo.

You pay more to get a good gaming pc than a console, but the games are more expensive. Hasn't that bin the case with all consoles for quite some time now?

They're called licensing fees. Third parties have to pay them to Sony, Nintendo and MS to make games for their platform. That's the main reason why games cost more on consoles than PC's. The cost of a Blu Ray disc is only about 5 cents more (maybe slightly more, I could be wrong) than a DVD 9, which makes the disc production cost negligible at best.

The DVD/Blu-Ray manufacturing costs arent a real issue for factoring the price of the games.

MS doesn't make PC's. Hence they have no right to royalties. In fact, Microsoft pays publishers to put their "Games for Windows" banner on the box.

Well Shadowrun is the exception to that rule. I have no clue why MS is charging you more for the 360 edition.

Third Parties pay the licensing fees as an investment. If things go well and the game takes off, that initial investment would've paid off in a big way for them. And yes, Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft would want developers making games on their platforms, but you've got to remember that, in the end, the developers and publishers are the ones really benefitting from the sales of the gameand the hardware manufacturers want a small piece of the action.

Instead of the $10 royalty being built into the standard $50 price structure, they are just hitting the consumer up for more on top of that, just like they do with microtransacions. There's simply just too many suckers out there.

all 3 consoles are guilty of having more expensive games than PC. it comes with the territority. when buying a game, ure not just paying for the disc, ure paying for a licence to use ythe game (u dont actually own the game technically). this covers the costs of making it. this applies to PC also.

however there are extra costs that console games have. a publisher has to pay a pretty hefty licencing fee too sony/MS/ninty to have the right to make the game on a console. a dev cant just go ahead and make something, they have to get a green light from the mmanufacturer. devs also have to buy special dev kits from the manufacturers to make and test games for the console. testing also has to be more rigerous to meet a higher standard compared to PC games. consoles are usually at below cost price (the exception being ninty). this is not a charity, the manufacturers want there money back and make it through every game sold.

Economics says something is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. So in essence, yes. If people stopped buing the games at $60, MS would have no choice but to lower the price.

It's Microsoft. They like money. Since they don't control the PC gaming industry, they cannot charge what they think they can get away with for their games. Most PC games are around 30 USD/40 CAD when they come out... most 360 games are 60 USD/70 CAD. It is disgusting. This along with poor hardware and paying for online gaming is what has me still on the fence about the 360.

Why's everyone complaining about $50-60? Ten years ago, we were paying $60-80 for a game, and the dollar bought more than than it does now. Want to blame someone, blame Sony for establishing the trend of a price cap that doesn't keep up with inflation.

Yes, damn Microsoft. Those money grubbing bastards!

Nevermind the fact that Sony is also charging you $59 for Oblivion, Spiderman 3, Need for Speed Carbon, Splinter Cell Double Agent, and other games that can befound on the PC for much cheaper. And lets all forget that the Blu Ray discs are only about 5 cents more to produce than a DVD, negating that cost. Yes, Microsoft is the only one to blame here!

MS has been charging $50 for their first party games. Halo 3 will be $60 base.

It's the greedy Dev's to blame... Not MS.

From what I read MS gets about 10% of the profits a game sells. Thats$5 for$50 and $6 for a $60.

A $10 increase in 1 gen = Greedy Dev's. This does not just effect 360... It also effects PS3.

Do you even know what "Games for Windows" is? MS PAYS the publisher just to have that label put on their game and have a 360 controller be usable for that game.

Well, considering that Microsoft don't live in some sort of protectionist centralized economy, yes, they do have the right to charge whatever the hell they want for their product.

Truth_Hurts_U

Indeed...

And on a related sidenote, Microsoft charges $50 a year for P2P multiplayer. Ironically there are dedicated servers for Motorstorms (and others I'm sure) free multiplayer. Microsoft also does not allow certain thid party accessories. Wireless controller and force feedback wheel for instance.

How are you gonna excuse away that?

because that's where they make money :) COsts of designing new console, then market is are huge. And most consoles are sold below the manufacturing costs for a year or two. Without fees console manufacturers would be loosing money.

I don't think you understand how the industry works.

The reason they charge more for console software is because they have to.

Microsoft loses money on the 360 hardware, the most was lost early in its lifespan.... they recoup the expenses through software sales, arcade downloads, etc.

The PC market works completely differently. PC hardware manufacturers make profit right from the get go, so PC developers aren't bound by license contracts from PC manufacturers (since the PC manufacturers aren't as involved in the software side of sales, they don't need to be - they make their bread from seeling hardware. Microsoft loses money on hardware in the hopes of making it back, and more, on software.)

It's the greedy Dev's to blame... Not MS.

Indeed...

And on a related sidenote, Microsoft charges $50 a year for P2P multiplayer. Ironically there are dedicated servers for Motorstorms (and others I'm sure) freemultiplayer. Microsoft also does not allow certain thid party accessories. Wireless controller and force feedback wheel for instance.

How are you gonna excuse away that?

InsaneBasura

It's been well over 4 games that been $50. MS does not set the game price. Dev's do.

Who ever thinks Microsoft sets game prices don't know what there talking about.

Plus it's a % Microsoft charges... Not a flat rate. It's to make it fair for the budget games.

P.S.

When did XBL get brought up in this?

Exactly... Dev's were the ones saying it costs more to make games. They wanted the price increase. They got it.

Then why are games still the same price on the Wii?

The same reason why PS2 games are the same price. They are not "next gen". There for costs less to make.

Because they don't cost as much to make.

Ask the Dev's don't ask me. They were the ones crying about how much it costs to make games, on the next gen systems.

Except they are sitting in a much more powerful position than us. Our "right" means nothing because if I refuse to pay that price, I'm basically not gonna be playing games.
