This has been discussed so many times please just stop with these threads. The only way Microsoft owns the market is because 95% of computers have Windows as an operation system. The only way really real way is like with Games for Windows thing but even then they don't really own the market.

trix5817

They don't even make money off of Games For Windows games. They have to pay the publisher to put that on their game's box. You think they'd have to do that for a 360 game?

Exactly! MS owns the 360, so every game for it has to have the white bar, green case, and Xbox 360 written on it. The PC however is an open platform, and the publishers can put whatever they want on it. If MS owned the PC gaming market, EVERY game would have GfW on the top, but they don't because MS doesn't own the market.

Just because most games are played on Windows....doesn't mean MS owns PC gaming market.

MS just produces one of the many parts required to game on PCs. They don't make money off PC games sold, they just make money of each OS copy sold, just like Intel or AMD or Nvidia make money when one of their product is sold.

MS owns PC gaming market....is like saying IBM owns X360 and PS3 gaming market cos they make processors for both of them.

Why does this matter? Bottom line it is good none the less because you need windows to play these games. So in some way shape or form Microsoft benefits from this.

Even though DirectX is a closed source software, DirectX runtime and software development kit are available free of charge

Your point? They also befefit from thousands upon thousands of other businesses, but not directly. They don't own PC gaming, sorry. By your logic, the electrical companies own console gaming because you can't play a console without plugging that machine into an outlet, correct?

I find it amusing that Lemmings are actually agreeing that the 360 isn't worth anything if pc gaming is compared to it.

Even though DirectX is a closed source software, DirectX runtime and software development kit are available free of charge

So your telling me that a game licensed for Windows that uses directx technology doesn't have to pay Microsoft anything?

What would be the point in Microsoft investing in directx in the first place if not to make money?

Without Directx you wouldn't need windows to play games. So people would be free to use whatever they want, that is the reason why it's free (to hold their marketshare).

MS doesn't see a dime from any Windows software, and this includes games. DirectX is very free, you can go download the SDK off the website right now if you'd like.

The point of DirectX is to get developers to use an SDK that locks them into the windows platform. If a studio uses OpenGL then all the graphics code is cross-platform compatible, but with DirectX its only good on Windows (or the 360).

Dude.....Are you actually serious about your argument....I mean if developers had to pay MS to use DirectX, why on earth would they use DX in the first place when thereis a open sourcealternative available for them to develop games on?

Exactly. I really don't see how this is such a hard concept for some people to understand. It's not rocket science.

Oh so its about DirectX? Guess what hoss, All Windows APIs are totally royalty free. A game developer doesn't pay Microsoft jack to use DirectX.
