PC if you like every genre of gaming, and huge quantities of games.
Get a console if you must have their ever-shortening list of exclusives
I say PC, because I have never gamed as much as I have since I switched to PC.

That might be a bad thing =0 :P
Addressing TC I think PC gaming will always be a given... it's just a matter of what console (if any), will be worth the time/money. I found trying to own it all and play it all a tad bit overrated this gen. That said I'm still a sucker and will probably buy the Vita, Wii U and next Playstation.

I will say PC, but it will cost you a lot of money to do it right, and it will require a little bit more work on your part to keep things running smoothly, especially if you want a nice living room set up, a dedicated gaming pc that is hooked up to your hdtv and audio equipment. This is not the kind of thing you buy at the store and give as a present under the Christmas tree, and its not the kind of device that you can swap games with your friends, or take with you on a vacation, or rent games from the local Red Box.
I am going to try the PC/Wii U combo for the next generation. My pc is decked out and i dont see how the next gen ps4/next box can compete technically, so i dont see a need for those consoles. The Wii U is in a catagory all by itself and will satisfy my needs on a different level.
The answer is easy
I will go with all consoles, which will cost me lower than a good PC and will last 5 years longer and give me 90% more games i want, which are usually console exclusive (JRPGs, Fable, Zelda, Halo, Alan Wake etc)
And above all consoles have single player game forcus and i never game online
All my top wanted next gen games like Bravely Default, Fable 4, Witcher 3, Lost Odyssey 2, FF15 Agnes etc are only on consoles

Still think decent PCs cost 10 grand, eh? Just proves indisputably that you've never owned one. I use a 3 year old laptop that I paid just over $1000 when it was new, and it plays all multiplatform games at high enough settings to look noticeably better than the console versions. I know. I compare them side by side with my roommate and his PS3, constantly.

I count all PC hardware i would have paid for since xbox 1 days
PC would be at least 2.000$ + 1500$ + 1500$ + 1500$ for all those years, to stay somewhat relevant with medium range PCs
All consoles for all those generations plus the next one would cost below 1000$ combined

However, you forgot having to replace the average red ring you'd end up spending well over $10k annually. And judging how cheaply the consoles will have to be made next gen I'd expect far more than 3RRoD a month.

Still more evidence that you've never owned one. A competent gaming PC doesn't require anywhere near $2000 to start, or anywhere near $1500 a year in upgrades. Also, learn to do math. You're saying an xbox 1, ps2, gamecube, 360, ps3, and wii, are less than $1000 combined? Maybe if you don't buy any of them until they're 6 years old, and dirt cheap. But then you're missing out on all those great games, all those years.

A console is called a waste of money where as a PC is called an investment. Get with the times bro. What I'll do next-gen : er, I'm already there, I have a gaming PC.
I'll keep on enjoying it, and probably get a WiiU because I love Nintendo first party. NextBox is a big fat "No" for me, since I can't think of a single game on the 360 I like that isn't a multiplat. PS4 maybe, depending on the quality of Sony's first party in a couple of years.

Don't forget to include the price of the PCs you bought anyway because I doubt you'd be posting here on any of those consoles. I game and post here on the same PC plus do all other productive work.
Since 2001, I've had 3 gaming PCs. These are the real-world prices I paid for them:
2001: AMD Athlon XP 1700+ (mid-range) = $850 + $172 for midlife video card upgrade = $1022
2005: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ (first dualcore PC; near the very top) = $1500 + $120 for midlife video card = $1620
2009 - current: AMD Phenom II X3 720BE (mid-range) = $760 + $219 for video card midlife upgrade = $979
My cost for 3 PCs: $3621
If I went console gaming only, my real-world price would be:
XBox ($300) + GC ($200) + Non-gaming PC ($500) = $1000
360 ($300 for low-end stripped down) + PS3 ($500 for low-end) + Wii ($250) + Newer non-gaming PC ($400) = $1630
My cost for gaming on consoles only = $2630 which doesn't include prices for 360 upgrades from the crappy core version, XBLGold (since 2002), or a new PS3 hard drive (20gb isn't going to cut it over time)
Add $100 for an upgraded 360 + $500 for XBLG + $80 for a new PS3 hard drive
Add:
1. That's just last and current-gen. A Wii U? That's another $300
2. If I went with the least common denominator for graphics (1280x720) or even the Wii's sub-HD, I can get rid of all the midlife video card upgrades for the PC.
3. I forgot to add the PS2 which should be in the list because it's the same gen as the XBox.
A decent gaming pc will last you for a long time + infinite backward compatibility. But you still need console to enjoy good exclusives.rjdofu
A top of the top PC will last you 3-4 years top
A 5000$ PC with a 7800GTX SLI of 2005 cant even play Witcher 2 at all, while xbox 360 does it with much better lighting than PC
PC is a waste of time, especially now that all major games are on consoles also and PC misses nearly all console exclusives
If you're in the market right now, go PC. It'll get the serious multiplats and PC exclusives you won't get on consoles and the console exclusives aren't going to flesh out for another year or two for the next-gen systems. This way you can allow yourself time to evaluate which system has the best exclusives for you and when you do decide to purchase a console (or if you decide to), many of those games will be less expensive than their initial launch MSRP.

You have not really played Witcher 2 on xbox 360, so how do you even know how it is
Digital Foundry has confirmed much better lighting on xbox 360, why do you think a random forum user that has never compared the two versions has a say in the matter ?
The only question really is if someone wants a single good game on PC every 4-5 years or 15+ amazing exclusives per year on consoles AND all the best PC has to offer
Why don't you get a proper gaming PC, then later on get a next generation console. It's not like your income/parent's income will cease to exist. With patience, you can have both.
Lucianu
Wait, so people still get paid after they die?! Is that where SSecurity went???
OT: I agree with this. It's not like purchasing the slim model of what ever console down the line will keep you from playing any games released prior to the new console model.
