Oh oh i gotta say what everyone been saying about Steam sure is true, after getting a new PC i thought i'd look at Steam for once and i was blown away by the collection of the games in there and the prices, some of the games there were pretty cheap. i got Portal and Left for Dead 2. cant believe this but i think im going play on my PC from now on.. so its both PS3 and PC now! :o... this may sound more of a blog material i know :P but to make it intresting which you guys think is faster in terms of downloading games.. Steam or PSN? after donwloading from Steam it feels like Steam is much slower than PSN...also im loving the idea of how you can send a game to a friend as a gift

Any suggestions? any recomendation for someone new to Steam?

Gamer on PS3 and PC 8)

Well, most of the games on steam are 6+ GB. Most of the games on PSN are under 1 GB. Naturally, it would take longer to download a full fledged game.

But yes, Steam is quite nice. Personally, i think one of the best features of steam is never needing a disc to put it. Its nice to just press one button and launch a game.

Steam is so much faster man downloading games, it's kind of ridiculous. I can download a 6 gb game within a hour on Steam while on PSN just 1 gb could sometimes take me over a hour. Steam download speeds is just way much faster especially when you compare how big the games are. Yeah I don't know why PSN or XBLA doesn't let you gift games. I mean even the Wii lets you gift games.

I belive Steam just recently upgraded it's servers ahead of the holiday sale.

Good on them.

And don't forget to setup your Steam community stuff too. And join some groups!

really? oh the idea of sending games as a gift via network is seriously new to me :P. would have been great if PSN has this.

I don't know if I should consider you lucky or misfortunate for missing the Christmas sale, but welcome to PC gaming!

Now go buy Amnesia.

Edit: For speed, both seem the same to me, though Steam fluctuates more. Then again, there's not a crazy sale going on in PSN when I download from there.

Yeah a friend of mine told me about how i missed the big sales. i'll keep an eye on the next patch of sales. do they have sales more often? PSN does it every week and they had a big one dring the holidays tho i missed the PSN sales as well

Steam has sales most days. but the relaly big sales usually happen along a holiday or some type of theme. Like last year there were great summer sales, but the fourht of july sales (it ws the whole week) were awesome!

Steam is legendary. It's like having all of your console games preloaded and ready to start on demand without disk swaps.

Just one of the many reason to convert to PC gaming.

Now that you're in PC gaming you should learn what fps and Anti-Aliasing is Butters. :P

As far as PSN vs Steam speeds, I get 2-3 mbps on Steam, don't know how fast PSN goes for some people.

I hate Steam. Its the serpent with an apple. Its the devil in a red dress. She walks over to you all sexy, sticks her hand in your pants, grabs your wallet, and leaves you standing there hopelessly naked. Yea something like that.

Apparently so is plugging an HDMI cable from the PC to a TV with the way so many console gamers go "I prefer playing games on my 60" TV!"

If you were intending to game on a TV I presume you would have checked this out. Of course some people like to poop on PC gaming without knowing much about it, I hope you're not one of them ;)

The PC is a second-rate console in the living room. No local multiplayer, no buying movies and games with the same account, and it also gets skipped on some major exclusives like Red Dead Redemption and the EA Sports series.

which you guys think is faster in terms of downloading games.. Steam or PSN?

finalstar2007

For me it's Steam. PSN sucks on my connection, it can honestly take twenty minutes to download a 16 Mb patch sometimes. It's bizarre. With Steam, I'd say my average download rate is probably 1.8 Mb/s.

I'm a person who play games on the computer but I can tell you I do not care much for Steam. Steam is just one of the many digital download game portals available on the internet. Sometime Steam is cheaper than the competition, most of the time it isn't. Instead of blindly praising steam, check out the other sites such as GamerGates.com (I downloaded my Mass Effect 2 Dux edition here), GOG.COM, Direct2drive.com, implusedriven.com and boatload of other sites. This winter holiday, Amazon had many games available for download that beats Steam prices and without Steam's heavy DRM.

Going by your posting history I can recommend you Recettear and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 along with Vietnam.

I wish I could recommend you more, but I dont know you as well as you know yourself

  1. What genres do you like?
  2. How important is accessability to you?
  3. Would you enjoy playing a highly flawed/buggy game that is otherwise a lot of fun?
  4. How important are graphics to you?
  5. Any genres you havent tried yet, like mmorpgs and tbs's?

By the way welcome to PC gaming :) Oh and if you want to add some fellow gamespotters so you can see what we are playing and what games we have recommended. There is also a spreadsheet that allows you to see any PC games that have scored above a 7 on gamespot.

The annoying thing is, though, it doesn't do that all the time. Like it was fine downloading the Gran Turismo 5 patches when they came out, but the other day my brother goes to play Burnout Paradise and it took about a half hour to download a 23 Mb patch. :|

Well, it depends where you are, and apparently how many squirrels are partying in your backyard at the time...

My cable internet can potentially get around 1mbps download speed, but I think the squirrels in my backyard use the neighborhood cable box (conveniently located in my backyard) as a dance club, and it can drop down to around half that speed, or less occassionally :(

You did just miss the HUMUNGOUS sales though... :( The next time they do sales that big is the Summer sale, so stay tuned for that 8)

But each week they usually do the Midweek Madness, and then the Weekend Deal as well, but those are usually just one or two games. :)

Steam can slow down to a crawl during sales, but normally I get the max speed. Don't have complains about PSN either when it comes to downloading full games, but the updates are noticably slower there.

PSN is definitely the slowest of the three for me. XBL is usually pretty darn fast. Its hard to judge really cause I dont know if you can check latency on XBL. I never have.

LOL, What?

You have heard of Amazon on demand, Netflix, HULU, Cinemanow, Youtube, right?

A PC can be your Blu-ray player, your gaming console, your DVR, your internet stream portal all in one.

And unlike consoles it'll be playing at true 1080p 60+ fPS and better graphics overall.

Welcome to the light. Enjoy your stay. ;) Seriously though, there's certainly a lot to enjoy on steam and with PC gaming in general. I hope you get your money's worth from all the fantastic titles on offer. Be sure to check out a few mods too.

The PS3 is certainly the console that compliments a nice PC best, I feel. 'Tis the combination I have myself and I couldn't be happier.

I own BC2 on PS3 and kinda regret buying it for full price, i only played that game for like a few games then before i know it i was back to Call of Duty, thing is all my friends play call of duty :P tho i will look around and see about Recettear as for your questions:

  1. Im into everything now, i used to only like JRPGs but after owning the PS3 for a couple of years now it pretty much changed my taste, i play everything now from FPS's to platformers to anything.
  2. A bit important
  3. Sure no problem at all, i mean MW2 was too buggy but i still played that for so long
  4. Not important
  5. have yet to play an mmo and a wrpg

Thanks and will check it out

Steam is great, but people shouldn't forget that there are a multitude of digital retailers. I myself enjoy GOG a lot for example.

I'd recommend the witcher as a decent starting point for a recent WRPG, Dragon Age on the PC might be a bit overwhelming but its definately worth it (and a far superior experience, although tougher, than the console version).

EDIT and the Witcher (enhanced) is only $20 but if you wait and watch it will prob go on sale at some point (not sure if the wait is worth saving $5 though)

I often get more than 1MB/sec and up to 2.4MB/sec on steam. On PSN I'm lucky to get over 100KB/sec.

Mass effect 1 is also a good start for a WRPG. Did you get Oblivion on the console? If not, or even if you did and liked the game, the PC version + mods is an ENTIRELY new experience. Definitely give that a shot.

And I'd lik eto second the suggesiton above about other download services. Love Steam but don't forget about Impulse (Great strategy games), GOG.com (Good old games. Lots of amazing old school games avialable there for a great price), and Driect2drive.com. I tend not to pick them over Steam in most cases, but they usually get some games from EA first (or exclusively, like the Sims).

have yet to play an mmo and a wrpg

finalstar2007

I'd recommend the witcher as a decent starting point for a recent WRPG, Dragon Age on the PC might be a bit overwhelming but its definately worth it (and a far superior experience, although tougher, than the console version).

EDIT and the Witcher (enhanced) is only $20 but if you wait and watch it will prob go on sale at some point (not sure if the wait is worth saving $5 though)

tbh i was thinking about making Mass Effect 2 ( PS3 ) as my very first wrpg to play.

I wouldn't recommend that. Mass Effect is a trilogy, and stumbling into 2, even with a recap of the story for 1 is just not the same thing as experiencing the story for yourself. Since ME1 is not available on the PS3, AND the PC version of ME1 is by far the best, I'd strongly recommend you play it on your PC. It's super chepa on Steam :) This way you can experience the awesomeness of ME1, AND keep your saved game to transfer to ME2. ME2 will read your saved game and transfer all of your decisions from ME1, only adding to the awesomeness that is that gaming universe.

Now that you're in PC gaming you should learn what fps and Anti-Aliasing is Butters. :P

As far as PSN vs Steam speeds, I get 2-3 mbps on Steam, don't know how fast PSN goes for some people.

I donwload from steam with 3.1 MB/s. For me my steam download seems to max my connection speed, and PSN doesn't. PSN speed fluctuates a lot but usually downloads around 700 kB/s i think.

The Steam holiday sales were crazy this year, you are both fortunate and unfortunate to have missed them.

how fast you download games from steam is completely reliant on how close you are to the server and how busy it is. so it may be faster than PSN/xbox live at points, or it could be slower. during the christmas sale, i witnessed my download speeds werent at max just because of how populated the servers were and how they didnt have the amount of bandwidth to give me that max speed, but i dont care at all; just using that as an example.
