How about a custom built one?

pre-builts are always more expensive and give less performance.

Desktop : custom built of course

Laptop: Thinkpads. By far the best keyboards on the market, the best energonomy, they have trackpoints, tough built and they are one of the few laptops that don't look goofy and flashy.

for a sec there i thought we were talking PC types.....so i voted IBM. oops :P the best crowd i have ever had build a PC for me was a crowd called CyperPower. they built the PC very well, cables tidied very nicely and all that and they delivered a good PC. when i suspected i had a problem with the GPU their technical support was also very good (turns out the GPU was also fine).

Definately custom built computers. By far the best bang for buck around.

I prefer DIY. At the very least, I would've preferred a true clone with off-the-shelf parts like one from cyberpowerpc.com

Custom built for me, but with a slight preference toward Nvidia, my recent GPU history: 7900GT>8800GT>GTX460. Feature wise Nvidia wins, how ever if AMD would put out something better for the buck I would switch in a heart beat.

OEMS sucks all over priced low end systems with ungly cases . Customs are good when some one spends real money and time into them. I hate seeing a 450$ pc where the owner acts like its the most amazing thing ever when it has junk hardware in it .

Desktop PCs- custom build Laptops- Apple, well built, reliable, and it's OS is extremely efficient in terms of resource usage.

For a gaming laptop, I'd go with either Asus or MSI.

 Apple for laptops :? That some sort of joke? They're junk for the price you pay. There is no reason for their laptops to be 2 to 3 times more expensive then a windows laptop of similar specs. As for reliability and quality you would go with ASUS. If you want the best portability (light weight, small, long battery life) while maintaining functionality you might consider a Vaio Z.

*Slams head against the keyboard* Mac OSX is a PC OS, no matter how much marketing they do to say otherwise. Apple computers use the same components and the same software (For the most part). Hell, Apple and Microsoft (Add in IBM for hardware) were the ones who brought the PC to the mainstream. If Mac OSX isn't a PC OS, then Linux isn't as well.

Dell is now the best...they offer Steam installed at the factory.

HP is prejudiced against nVidia GPUs...if you order a PC from them with nVidia, then you can't have a sound card...if you want a sound card, they force you to buy only ATI, and that's just bad marketing, imo.

Dell? Is the poll results serious? Anyway, to get anything else than custom built is dumb. Especially since there are stores that put everything together for you, if you have no idea how a computer works.

This made me laugh. Like others have said, custom PCs are the best. The real war in PC gaming is nVidia vs. AMD and Intel vs. AMD among a few smaller battles in other types of hardware.

Why? It doesn't day in the OP that we were only including name brand, and even if it did name brand sucks compared to custom and costs more.
