The PS2 had some great horror games, but this gen the consoles have not had many great or even good horror games. PC has had many great horror games with the Penumbra series, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: SoC, Amnesia, The Path, and others have all delivered a true horror feel, and not action such as Dead Space (still a great game though) and RE5 (meh...).

Mods though, have really stepped up their game for horror. I remember The Worry of Newport mod for Crysis (http://www.moddb.com/mods/the-worry-of-newport) was great. One of the latest ones is Cry of Fear:

http://www.moddb.com/mods/cry-of-fear/downloads/cry-of-fear-version-10

and it isn't too bad. It is a total conversion mod for Half-Life (not HL2) so the graphics are not that great, but that is where mods get a little boost, I think, for horror games. That lower budget feeling they have adds to the atmosphere a bit.

So SWs, for those that dislike mods because they 'only wish to play the game the developers intended', do these total conversion mods tickle your fancy? They are free games and have no ties to the original games except that they use the same engine.

To bad I can't find those games on disk (most of them). I hate buying games from steam :/. But yes pc is indeed the place for horror games.

Yeah, horror games weren't big on consoles this gen, which is a shame. There were some great ones in the past.

You don't have to buy them from steam and you can burn it to a disk.

Paranoia mod for Half-Life 1 has a really uneasy atmosphere akin to STALKER and Metro 2033 (it was made by Russians after all). The final version came out in 2008 and another group, with some help of the original modders, even ported it over to the Dreamcast running on the unreleased Half-Life Dreamcast engine.

Cry of Fear looks good though, I'll be sure to check it out.

paranoia was great but the ending was awful. a helicopter final boss... really.

cry of fear is fantastic, the only thing that sucks about it I find is the dual wield system is a pain the ass, having to mess around your inventory while not that painful, really hurts the flow for me.

story is fairly interesting also. atmosphere is great, monsters are disturbing.

the garbage bag children are just plain fcked up.

Not sure why you talk about having to buy something on Steam. Pretty sure you can still find disks of HL1 on many sites not to mention Ebay. Once you get a game via DD means, you can burn them onto a disk.

Lower budget feeling adds to the atmosphere? What? I love PC games and all of the horror mods/games we get, but that's just a stupid thing to say.

Not surprising. The best genre for horror has always been adventure. On consoles that genre never became popular, so when devs even try horror they do it mostly in action genre, exceptions like Fatal Frame are unfortunatelly very rare. And by having your game be an action game, you immiedietely shoot yourself in the foot as far as horror goes and its just hard to recover after that.

If you are a horror fan, and don't have a PC, then you should reconsider calling yourself a horror fan.

idk, homecoming didn't feel that emo, it just felt like more of an action game and less silent hill, exploring, etc.

Can't really disagree.

Mainstream horror is rather crappy and the good horror and survival games I've played all came from mod games like The Killing Floor and just a really amazing games like Amnesia: The Dark Descent.

Here is another first person survival horror game that will be coming out on the PC and this one will also be free when released, this only shows the trailer and it will likely be late 2012 before anything good releases from it.

http://www.indiegamemag.com/free-first-person-survival-horror-black-seed-gets-a-creepy-teaser/

Maybe you guys can help me. What is that one first person horror game that the beta/demo has been out for a few months. There are some firearms but it is mostly hand-to-hand type of combat. The early part of the demo has you going down some streets with a gas mask on. I can't remember the name of it.

AdrianWerner

Consoles are full of horror adventure games. Even RE used to fundamentally be an adventure game, before being an action game.

Nope. Alone in the Dark was adventure game with few action elements thrown in. Resident Evil has reversed that. It always has been action game with few adventure elements spicing things up.

Oh..and Zelda isn't an adventure game either :)

I disagree. The progression in RE has always been adventure based (prior to 4). You progress by solving puzzles and monsters are largely obstacles, outside of boss fights. Some boss fights don't even require you to defeat, letting you grab the item you need rather than bothering with the boss, like the snake. There are many horror adventure games on consoles last gen. Siren, Siren 2, Silent Hill, Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill 3, Silent Hill 4, Clock Tower 2, Clock Tower Ghost Head Clock Tower 3, Haunting Ground, Rule of Rose, etc.

Don't really see how Fatal Frame is all that different from RE. They're both puzzle/exploration based with a combat system that's based on "shooting" your enemy and limited inventory. The only difference is that in Fatal Frame you'll probably find yourself taking on enemies more frequently than you avoid them.

I like it. Got a bit furious with the trial and error when taking on the smokey guys (it tells you to counter at first, but not until you've died again does it tell you how to counter...where is the logic in that...

Talking about Black Death btw.

I disagree. The progression in RE has always been adventure based (prior to 4). You progress by solving puzzles and monsters are largely obstacleshakanakumono

You spend more time fighting monsters than you do solving puzzles. The ammount of action is that pushes games like RE or Silent Hill out of adventure genre and into action-adventure one.

Any ammount of action beyond few short mini games throws the game out of adventure genre

Yeah, the whole budget increase and push into the mainstream has nuked a good deal of horror titles for the mass market. So it's no surprise on a platform that can support much more of a niche audience it thrives. Which is a shame, though there are some excellent horror games still remaining on consoles.

Try to stay on topic. I am talking about this current gen of consoles. In my OP, I mention that previous gen, PS2, had some great horror titles, but this gen, they are very, very rare.

Does anyone recommends Corrosion: Cold Winter Waiting? I'm quite interested in this horror adventure game that was recently released. But unfortunatelly there isn't much information about it.
