What People Are Saying
You couldn't pay us to play Lair any more than we have already. The game has given me a new respect for the professional reviewer, because when a game like Lair hits their desk, they have no recourse. They must tread, as Dante did, down that scarred staircase and into the greasy throat of hell.

The people behind the solid reinvention of Warhawk chose - in their kindness, and in their wisdom - to let the player decide if they want to wrangle their flight gameplay via Sixaxis or the analog sticks, a move that'll prove prescient. Controls aren't the only problem in Lair, though, so altering the controls wouldn't represent a complete solution. You're using those controls to accomplish frustrating, unimaginative, sometimes enigmatic tasks. People will forgive a good game its indulgences if they feel they're being met halfway, and one never gets that impression here. You may find yourself in disbelief an hour into it, the Electronics Boutique receipt crumpled in your fist, trying to correlate Lair's non-stop torrent of anguish and your missing sixty bucks.

I would never ask you to take my word over your own experience, though, and you'll certainly find those online who will bolster you in your choice to purchase. There are some who derive a kind of perverse superiority from their mastery of the game's ambiguous mechanics. For my part, I don't give a good Goddamn if someone has trained themselves to eat **** and like it. The game is not challenging, it's difficult to play, and it's taken many years but I'm ready to begin making this distinction.

This is an indictment of Lair, and not an indictment of the Playstation 3 as a platform like you might see burst online in some flammable thread. Playstation 3 owners will have plenty to crow about soon enough. Heavenly Sword, well... We'll talk about Heavenly Sword later. But Lair and Sony aren't synonyms, it isn't emblematic of your choice of console. It's just... bad, a raw-feeling launch title that even an additional year could not rescue.

We don't need Lair to be good, and so we don't need to make excuses for it. It has been extremely strange to watch the community react to reviews like the one at IGN, with claims that the site is "known" to be biased against the Playstation 3 - as though a site with IGN's expenses could afford to play such a dangerous game with one of the pillars of the medium. The reality is that IGN delivering a four-point-nine review of a title this anticipated is a sign of their allegiance to the reader. I'm not a fan of the site. IGN.com is not my homepage. But scoring a game this low, so at variance with their average numerics, is the sort of maneuver that should restore faith.

(CW)TB out.

Ok we get it. It flopped. The 4.5 bit has gotten more play than most games.

Summary: The game sucks, but it's not PS3's only game.

The only thing that will keep Lair from being completely forgotten by the game community within 2 years will be if it somehow manages to sell through the roof, which I find highly unlikely seeing as it's been universally panned by critics. Killzone got mixed reviews, but it managed to sell well, so we still talk about it. Lair got terrible reviews, and I expect it will sell poorly, and cast to the wayside of failed videogame hell.

That was well done. I wouldn't have expected that from PA. Either way, he makes a good point at the end. All the conspiracy theorists come out when a game flops this bad. "Gamespot are biased against PS3! Jeff is teh uber lemming!"

I highly doubt LAIR will sell well. News travels fast nowadays...moreso than a few years back. I think it's impossible for it to sell more than 100k. I don't think it'll even hit that.

Yeah, I do feel bad for Factor 5, because obviously A LOT of work went into this game. But they had a mis-guided vision, so it ended up being crap. I hope that Sony gives F5 another chance to make a good game. Rogue Squadron 4, anyone?

Yeah, although I can't believe anybody would try to say GS is biased... I mean, if they gave Warhawk/some other quality game a 4.5, yes, but I haven't heard anybody here say they enjoy playing Lair.

Can't feel bad. They failed and they should have known it. Where were their quality control testers? Where was management demanding alternative control schemes? Where were the producers noticing there was a distinct lack of enjoyment in the game? They failed on just about evey meaningful level.

It's funny now that just about every review site has publicly called out all the freaked out desperate Sony fanboys, basically telling them we are not bias these games suck get over it. Sony fans should have known this was coming the PS3 has been a complete disaster since day one, be angry at Sony not the review sites for calling crap games crap. I know Sony fans must be pissed at spending 500+ for a doorstop of a game console but don't blame the review sites blame Sony for screwing up the PS3.

COWS, and who are the lamers with pitch forks and a mob mentality going after every review site that disses a PS3 game, COWS. The article was directed at COWS telling them to calm the hell down and deal with that fact that the recent batch of PS3 exclusives have sucked. Reviews sites aren't bias COWS just need to realize that the PS3 has a horrible game library now.

They said a lot of good things in there. Especially about the fanboy reactions to IGN's score orvery low scores in general. Also the opposing fanboy reactions that Lair somehow defines the ps3 and that the ps3 is trash because of Lair.

Didn't care much for the comic part though.

Game spot is bias i mean how can a game not get a perfect 10 when its powered by the Awesome Cell Processor and Blue Ray.the Ps3 is gaming perfection. Devs areto lazy to use its true power and the six axis is the gaming innovation of the century moo moo.

How long is the demo? From what I've read, the game gets aggravatingly repetitive. So depending on how long the demo is, you may or may not have run into the big problem of the game.

Lair was a nice idea just extremely poor executed, first off the controls i dont think using sixaxis will fit very good on this game if you use it on games like Folklore (not saying it will score good but the use of sixaxis is awsome) Also the camra was extremely poor which could have been fixed, also the way missions play with how to get gold and timing is sort of ridicoulous. All im saying it was a good idea just badly done. Also just becuase one game fails doesent mean the rest will.

I don't understand people like him, it's like he's trying to make me feel bad for enjoying my PS3 games. I currently have Resistance, Motorstorm, NBA 2k7, Ninja Gaiden and Warhawk. Have any of these games been recieved 'horribly' by the gaming media? No - am I enjoying them? Yes. So I can't wrap my head around his "COWS just need to realize that the PS3 has a horrible game library now."

I guess it's nice that those guys are trying to be fair by pointing out that lair does not mean the PS3 sucks, but the problem with that is that Lair is not the exception to the rule here but another dissappointment in a long line of them.

Thank god for Warhawk, It may be mostly broken but at least it's fun and patches can fix it, you can't patch what Lair is.

[QUOTE="PennyArcade"] What People Are Saying

[QUOTE="leejohnson7"]Does anybody else ever feel sorry for developers? I just feel that if they had tried something else with the gameplay it may have been a must buy.Dreams-Visions

Yeah, I do feel bad for Factor 5, because obviously A LOT of work went into this game. But they had a mis-guided vision, so it ended up being crap. I hope that Sony gives F5 another chance to make a good game. Rogue Squadron 4, anyone?

Can't feel bad. They failed and they should have known it. Where were their quality control testers? Where was management demanding alternative control schemes? Where were the producers noticing there was a distinct lack of enjoyment in the game? They failed on just about evey meaningful level.

There should have been a pre-release demo (there was meant to be one in July but it never materialised). The Heavenly Sword demo gave Ninja Theory a great deal of user feedback, and later they claimed that many of the complaints had been addressed. Factor-5 could have benefited from this kind of community/developer interaction had they been really serious about the game.

At the end of the day though, I feel that the gameplay was a mere recycling of Rogue Squadron's gameplay, but with dragons, rubbish tilt support and a dodgy camera. Community feedback could have helped slightly, but I think Factor-5's aims were already on the table from the start; they just wanted to re-use what they thought was a tried and trusted formula, but handled it all with disastrous results..

The difference is, Penny-Arcade and critics are ANGRY that Lair sucks, because they wanted it to be good. Lemmings and sheep however are laughing about it, because they wanted it to be bad, and they got their wish.

What I don't understand about all of this negativity surrounding hyping of a game is that if you read the previews of these games a lot of the time thy hype the game up with hands on impressions. Most people are forming an opinion of the game based on what sites like this write.

Read this and then tell me that this is a preview for a 4.5 game.

I think these sites need to give more objective previews of games rather than fluff like this. Oh I wonder why this game was hyped.

The whole point of my post is that it is a stupid endevour to bash someone who was optomistic about this game. Most people base opinions on games based on what they read in previews or from screenshots fed to us by these sites. Its all positive and then the review comes out and its a complete 180. This has never sat well with me and now I don't trust the previews of games. In turn the opposite effect of what you described has happened. I won't even read them because they hold no weight.

Instead of killing it in the womb they kill it at birth.
