I said it.

"Hardcore gaming" doesn't mean "best graphics and M-rated", it means good skill at playing games.

One could be playing Angry Birds and if he were great at it he would be a "hardcore player".

Likewise, "casual gaming" doesn't mean "easy to pick up and play".

It means that you game for no real challange or achievement (i.e. for fun).

People should really stop using these terms all the time if they have zero clue about what either stands for (my opinion).

This is my personal definition about them two:-

Casual gamers are the guys who likes Nintendogs, Barbie games, and enjoy jumping and waving in front of their Kinect like an idiot.

Hardcore gamers are the guys who likes Uncharted, Killzone, God of War and sit on their ass with a controller in their hands and game like a real man.

People have different opinions on what it means. For me, core gamers buy plenty of niche games (on purpose) while casuals usually only buy mainstream games.

I think the bigger problem is not that the definition of "hardcore" and "casual" are really vague and dependent on the individual, but rather that so many people online obsess over being labelled one thing or the other.

Your opinion doesn't make sense to me. There have to be "another" term for being different. That's hardcore and casual. My definition makes sense.

Maybe there should be something in the middle of the two terms for a gamer who does a hybrid of both. To me, it seems that you're a hybrid.

I always figured a casual was someone who didn't game very often and only on occasion, and a hardcare was someone who gamed all the time, particuarly hard games as well.

"Hardcore" sounds really bad when compared to casual. Casual is pretty good since it doesn't sound like anyone is trying to be a BA. Hardcore sounds like something a try-hard wannabe would say.

"Hardcore gamer" is just a joke, as Dr Delta mentioned, who is more hardcore? The guy who plays Mario Kart every day religiously or the guy that plays Halo or Demon's Souls on occasion during his down time? There is no such thing as hardcore gamer, it's just a joke. There are only gamers, no gamer is more hardcore than another.

And btw, Mario Kart >>> Halo and Demon's Souls. Mario Kart kicks ass, I could play that all day....

Core gamer actually just means the main fanbase of a system or game, core does not mean "hardcore". "Hardcore" is just a joke term that super nerdy D-bags use to look down on others so they can try and justify the lack of sex in their lives. Core simply means main fanbase, like 360 core audience are Halo fans, PS3 core audience are Uncharted fans, Wii core audience are Mario and Zelda fans ect...

Core does not mean hardcore. People get that confused. Hardcore doens't exist, core just main fanbase. No one in real life cares about wether a game is main stream or not.

Everyone has different views and rarely do two people agree, let alone the entire gaming community.

Why? Because hardcore is a dumb sh*t buzz word and nothing more. Its a way of some gamers trying to glorify, or justify their hobby and tastes when at the end of the day they're just playing damn games. Gaming media realized that this was becoming a popular idea among gamers and now they use it as well to cater to these suckers, and massage the ego.

If you must have division between gamers then it goes like this.

CORE - You are that gamer that will invest a lot in the hobby. You spend a good amount of money on it each and every year. You buy multiple platforms, accessories and most importantly tons of games. In other words you are a safe bet for revenue streams. You are outnumbered by the casual gamers, but you spend enough to still get attention from publishers.

CASUAL - Not so invested in the hobby. May buy a new platform on occasion. Rarely buys games. Plays out of boredom, or to simply pass the time. Maybe you pull out that same old party game when friends are around. You dont spend much at all, but there are so many of you that publishers still want a piece of the pie.

That's really it. There is no hardcore.

I don't get why people don't like these terms and the word "Hardcore". They make sense. Casual gamers are people who don't play games very much and they tend to avoid technical games like Killzone, Gears of War, Uncharted, etc and play simple games from the Wii and Kinect. Hardcore are people like me who regularly play games and enjoy technical games.

Of course, there is a thing as "hardcore". I explained it clearly above. I know everybody are "gamers" and I'm a gamer too but if you think technically, you can describe them in a specific way such as "casual" and "hardcore".

Exactly. That defines casual gamers. Hardcore, on the other hand, are like people on this forums and are willing to pursue gaming news.

I really don't know what's up with these people who said "there's no such thing as hardcore and casual"... and even some who thinks people who say they are hardcore to make them look "tough". :? Not true.

hardcore, at least to me, has to do with time, dedication and skill

It doesn't matter if you play killzone or farmville, if you only do it every once in a while, or just for fun then you're not hardcore, out of every user I've met on gamespot, I could count the hardcore gamers on two hands

Why people even bother with labels (for anything) is beyond me. If you have to self-identify with an arbitrary identifier in order to feel special... rather than just enjoying things for what they are, then you aren't doin' it right.
