Everyone has different views and rarely do two people agree, let alone the entire gaming community.
Why? Because hardcore is a dumb sh*t buzz word and nothing more. Its a way of some gamers trying to glorify, or justify their hobby and tastes when at the end of the day they're just playing damn games. Gaming media realized that this was becoming a popular idea among gamers and now they use it as well to cater to these suckers, and massage the ego.
If you must have division between gamers then it goes like this.
CORE - You are that gamer that will invest a lot in the hobby. You spend a good amount of money on it each and every year. You buy multiple platforms, accessories and most importantly tons of games. In other words you are a safe bet for revenue streams. You are outnumbered by the casual gamers, but you spend enough to still get attention from publishers.
CASUAL - Not so invested in the hobby. May buy a new platform on occasion. Rarely buys games. Plays out of boredom, or to simply pass the time. Maybe you pull out that same old party game when friends are around. You dont spend much at all, but there are so many of you that publishers still want a piece of the pie.
That's really it. There is no hardcore.
