It doesnt determine quality, it doesnt benefit us as gamers.

But it benefits us as fanboys.

Its basically a way to say "My console of choice performs better then yours in the real world" and "In the real world, not a place (forum) populated by a vocal minority, is where my console of choice is more popular and preferred".

As for this gen, total sales matter, and as for software, 360 has sold more globally then PS3 even without the year gap.

Imagine if the PS2 had less AAA's and AA's than either the GC or the XBox last generation (but sold just as much as it did, over 120 million something.) Had that happened, it would not be remembered nearly so fondly as it is remembered today, most would not even consider it the "winner" of the previous generation. The PS2 isn't remembered so fondly because it sold so much, it is remembered so fondly because of the huge amount of great games it had.

That's where the Wii is at right now. Despite having PS2-like sales it has the least AAA's and AA's, in fact it's barely keeping up with the levels the GC maintained. That's why it's getting so much grief.

I am glad that someone else understands.

I just hope the sheep get some benefit out of this. Because so far it seems that Nintendo is just hoarding the money.

And General Ram seems to keep ignoring the fact that even the PS3 has sold more consoles per year since its release. At this rate, it will do the same thing to the 360 that the Wii did: Surpass it. This goes even further when you realize that developers are figuring out that it's better to use the PS3 as the lead console, so now both versions look, and play, great when it comes to multiplats.

When you throw all of this on top of the fact that the PS3 has much higher durability, WiFi out of the box, HDMI out of the box on every console, and an online that is rapidly catching up with Live!, all of that superiority starts to slip away.

so, what, are you going to stand on the street corner promoting every game that comes out so they will get high sales in the hopes that the company who made it will make a sequel or another game? i doubt it. and sales dont exactly determine the chances of a new game. example: ubisoft's petz games. do they sell well? no. are they still being made? yes. and benefical? not exactly. example. capcom and resident evil 4:wii/resident evil umbrella chronicles. both sold well. and what happens? they make the accesible abomination known as dead rising: chop till you drop for the wii. how is that beneficial to wii owners? i bet it was beneficial to 360 and ps3 owners, as the funds from the re games probably went to re5.

Actually it's a place where people immature beyond their years use any means possible to make their console seem better, whether it be by sales, games, or stupid opinions.

Face it, if a certain group's console is leading in sales, they will use that, regardless of how they stood on the playing of sales in the previous gen.

I would agree that sales plays a part in software development, but with this gen it hasn't been the case.  If it were then developers would totally abandon developing for both the 360 and ps3 and just concetrate on the Wii, since it is a beast in sales, and cheaper to develop and publish for one console.  They would make a killing in sales and such.

Also, the reason MS snagged all those exclusives was because it wanted to make sure the 360 had a chance at succeeding this gen, not its sales.  It jumpstarted this gen, so of course many 3P developers jumped ship and joined MS, this is sound business strategy.  Also MS was paying for 3P exclusives before they were sellign consoles to insure its success this time around.  Remember all consoles sell at a loss over several years before they recoup money and begion to make a profit .  The original Xbox was a superior machine, but it's new entrant status, coupled by the fact that most 3rd parties remained exlusive to ps2 killed the xbox in the sales department.  MS never made a profit on the original XBOX but yet continued to enter this gen, and software developers conitnued to support MS.  It also helped that  the ps2 was a beast that gen, and developers were able to make a profit with only develpoing for one platform. 

This gen has 2 entrants in the next gen console wars, I don't include Wii because it really isn't next gen, and it really isn't in a heated war as are ps3 and ms.  Production and development costs for games are much more expensive, and in order to recoup money most 3rd parties will go across all platforms.   MS had a year headstart, so many 3rd party exclusive to ps2 jumped immediately to 360 this gen, since it was first system out.  Start making money in the new gen is sound business strategy. 

The fact that ms has not been able to totally blow away not only the ps3 (only 7 million ahead in sales) and the Wii with a year headstart speaks volumes of this gen.  3rd party developers take note and know that they will not limit their games to one console unless well compensated.  Unless MS performs like the ps2, or even the ps3 or wii performs like the ps2, the future gen consoles will all have multiplats, and will depend heavier on their 1p and 2p to distinguish themselves (remember Halo kept MS afloat). 

I don't see any of the big 3 disappearing any time soon. I really don't see MS or Sony going the route of the dreamcast.  Nintendo, hmmm, they have been around for a while and will be for a long time.  Hell even Apple wants to get in on the action.  Highly doubtful, but you never know.
