Bioshock is the spiritual successor to SS2 and alot of people on this board seem to have no clue how good of a legacy bioshock is inheriting.

EDIT: apparently its not abandonware, sorry guys guess you have to break the law or buy it off amazon or something.

System Shock 2 isn't actually abandonware. I would delete your link. =/

But it is a fantastic game, and well worth the purchase.

I played it. And personally I don't see what all the fuss is about. Underwhelming.

Granted, I did play it less than a year ago. :?

"We're sorry but because of increasing service maintaining costs we had to introduce paid subscription to our service. We offer two simple plans - either pay only $4.95 to use our download service without any limitations for 1 day, or for $6.95 you get unlimited downloads for the whole month! We hope this measure is sufferable for you - it costs you almost nothing and it really saves our site. If you really can't afford it, then we are very sorry, but there is no other way if we want to keep our site up. Thank you."

It's not exactly free, but System Shock 2 was quite a game...The atmosphere established in it can really show where some of the influences it has on Bioshock. It's teh roxxorz.

I used the link you gave in the thread about bioshock, didn't bother opening it to see if it was free. I downloaded it off underdogs a while back but didn't feel like hunting the link down.

I am quite glad I have a friend with an extremely large library of older PC games... if not, I would not have been able to get gems like SS2, Deus Ex, Theif: TDP, Total A and others. :)

Bioshock is going to be amazing... but will be overlooked by many because it does not follow the "popular" trend in current day shooters.

He did admit he played it very recently. Although in my opinion the only game to come even close to it in atmosphere recently has been STALKER. If you can get past the graphics, which judging from some people on here's posts they won't be able to, you get an amazing game.

Ya, its sad that innovative games like STALKER, bioshock, and similar things that stray from the mold will be overlooked in preference of trite rehashes that follow the same formula we have been playing for years.

*Nods, and gives kudos*

What irritates me are the people saying "lol, no multiplayer = fail", "just another shooter", or "looks too slow & boring". Apparently too enthralled by games like Half-Life and Halo (no criticism meant to either) to realise that not all FPSs follow the fast-paced, twitch-reflexes, guns-blazing formula.

Im gonna have a very hard time getting this game (which I think is a DOS game) to work on my Vista.

Runs silky smooth out of the box on XP, with no compatibility tweaking. Admittedly I know little about Vista, but I think you should be fine.

I have system shock 2, its pretty entertaining.  It's considered one of the scariest games and one of the best FPS's of all time.

Not all shooters are fast paced, some actually want to be different.

EDIT2: for those of you who aren't concerned with the legality this is the link to a free download of the game:

reaperstoll

nice you are trying to broaden the fanbase of SS and have others experience a greeat unique game but isnt this against TOS regulations. i understand you are trying to help fellow gamers, but its not worth getting in trouble for.

Ya, i had been pondering it since the first person mentioned it. I figure if people read the topic and really want to find the free download they will be able to piece together the information from the posts about it and use a google search or something to find it.

Thats why when Sheep tell me BioShock is just a atmospheric run-of-the-mill shooter, it just shows how much knowledge they really have of games.

IMHO, BioShock will be easily GOTY.

I love the game.

Be sure to get this texture pack upgrade: http://shtup.home.att.net/

Oh, and get this character model upgrade: http://mods.moddb.com/3329/system-shock-rebirthhigh-poly-pack/

That might make it a little better for graphics whores.

I hope so, but i think it will be overshadowed by more mainstream games. I just hope it attains decent enough sales for more devs to take risks making more innovative shooters like this.

Apparently system shock 2 isn't abandon ware like the underdogs says, so technically no, its not legal. You can try amazon or ebay to find a copy. I doubt it will come to XBLA, although that would be pretty cool.

System Shock 2 was an impulse purchase for me back when it was new, and damn, was it the best impulse purchase I've made in my life! I wish my copy wasn't still lying around in Virginia somewhere(I'm in Georgia now)...that, Magic Carpet 2, and a few other games that I would love to have back. Anyway, I can't wait for Bioshock...I just hope I have my new PC by the time it releases.

Ya, i was pleasantly surprised when I played it the first time a couple months ago. The graphics aren't spectacular but they are well enough done that it doesn't detract from the atmosphere.

Ill agree with you there, this game is going to be a huge failure, it wont sell, casuals will see a slow paced shooter where all you do is melee and fire with crappy guns that jam after two shots.

It just sucks, but the casual sydrome was dieing down but the Wii has taken it back to new levels. Mark my words, Mass Effect is in line.

Played both. The first one was cool... but I could never get into it, for some reason or another.

SS2, though... that game's near the top of my list for my favorite games ever (x-com and Fallout will never be dethroned! :P) The atmosphere, the customization, the emotions generated by the enemies (anyone else got a chill when a zombie - who you know was once someone you knew is running at you, trying to maul you while screaming in agony "kill me!"?)... the robot doing the macarena, everything. It was not a perfect game, of course... but it was gorram close.

*EDIT* Fun fact: I have never finished the game, despite replaying it dozens of times. For some reason, I have never been able to. Once it was a corrupt file. Once I fried a hard disk. Once a flood killed my PC. Yet another time, I did a clean install and forgot to backup the save file... etc etc etc.

SS1 has a FAR better storyline though, but yeah SS2 is probably in the top 5 best games of all time.

I am sad to admit that I never got around to picking up a copy of x-com and playing it. Any chance that it is abandonware?Â
