Everybody should grab this its like the best video game ever, don't get thedowngraded PSP version first, it really hurts the experience and is inferior in every possible way

Once you finish this get Persona 4, don't bother with crap like DDS or nocturne they are mediocre games

I agree with you that FES is the best starting point. However, there's nothing mediocre about nocturne and DDS. Those games are excellent and more "traditional" SMT than te new persona games, especially nocturne.

Zurrur

DDS and Nocturne are great games, but only for the strategy and difficulty, they lack interesting characters and the interactions of the Persona games. Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2 and Nocturne should be avoided by all except the most dedicated RPG players.

People who think the FF games are hard haven't played Nocturne on hard.

That's why it's only meant for "fans" and the reason why these games are niche, except for the persona games.

Nah the games are just bad, there is no excuse for them having terrible stories, bland characters, ugly art style and boring gameplay

Just downloaded it. Gonna play a little before work and either pick up where I left off when I get home, or keep going with Xenoblade Chronicles. I can't lose either way, as this is my first playthrough for both games.

Well yeah, technically. However, it does sell more than other SMT games and have more thread time on internet forums like this one. Persona is now the most main-stream franchise the SMT teams have in the market.

I already said this to another poster, try not to use a guide from the start, even if its tempting. It'll ruin the first time experience a bit. Unless of course you feel you wont ever go back to it, it's your choice. I usually stay away from guides for games in general and save them for future playthroughs.

It sounds hard to believe in the age of the internet and ease of access to guides and faqs, but I've literally never used a guide for a game in my 20 years as a gamer. I get the idea that it would ruin some of the fun, honestly. :P

Same here, unless I'm on a multiple playthrough and want to "exploit" everything the game has to offer.

I started playing DA:0 on 360 before I built my PC back up to gaming-ready standards. That's the long and short of it, really.

Isn't that sad though? It really shows the sad state of the JRPG genre on home consoles. Don't get me wrong, we've had some good-to-excellent JRPGs on all consoles, wether that's theh wii, ps3, or 360. But you can't ignore the fact that last gen, on the ps2 alone, we had x2 or x3 the amount of JRPGs a single year as opposed to now. Also we had a bigger flow of "high quality" JRPGs than ever before. Oh well.

Do yourself a HUGE favor and get the pc version, it's that good. Plus you get mod support and don't have to deal with the console slow-downs of the game engine.

Well, it released today, so I'm guessing it's permanent. All ps2 psn games have the $9.99 price tag.

Oh sweet. Don't go to PSN store very often so that's good to know. P3 Fes for 10 bucks really is a steal.

most of my games in my collection from Snes to PS3 are Jrpgs and I have played many other obscure games like Xak III, Shining the Holy Ark, etc. but one series that I have never understood why it is so revered is the SMT series. Every one of their games are as boring as they are archaic. Only appeal I see in them is the mix of a modern time setting with dark fantasy themes and nothing more. Catherine has been the only game coming from that team that is worth the time if you ask me.

The same question can be askedfor FF games and FF like games in general. What's so appealing in those too? I like JRPGs in general, and I don't have a problem with the differetnt types of JRPGs.

Mediocre game. Get the two Digital Devil Saga games on PSN instead.

Mediocre!? Not even close sure P4 is the better game, but P3 is amazing in it's own right.

I wouldn't say they are bad. Sure the story in Nocturne is nonexistent, the characters are boring. On the other hand I do enjoy the gameplay and dificuty that the game provides. DDS was a huge improvement gameplay wise, characters and especially story. As for the art styles I loved the styles from the older MegaTen titles

[QUOTE="edo-tensei"][QUOTE="Aljosa23"]lol is this a joke post? Have you played any other SMT games? Persona 3 FES and 4 are VERY dumbed down compared to past games and they're worse off for it.

I'm curious, what exactly did 4 simplify from 3? Adding full party control?

Bigboi500

The overall difficulty of 3 was toned downed in 4 as well as things like the "TIRED" systems were completely change. Things were more stream-lined like only introducing "one" physical attack type, and other things like skill cards, which made things that much easier. The dungeons themselves were much more simplified compare to the tower of P3 and FES. It seems you're unexperienced with these games.

Truth. As far as ease of use: P4>P3>DDS=Nocturne.

I agree for the most part. I actually prefer DDS over Nocturne by a decent margin though

I wouldnt say the story is nonexistent. It is just subtle. A small amount is given to you in the cutscenes. And a lot of the story is told through gameplay and adventuring. It has several branches and layers and it is very unique and well written. As for the characters, I think their development was carried out well. It showed the descent into madness that would follow after finding the world in that state.

I actually liked P3 FES more than 4. P4 might have had its persona elements alot more intertwined. The structure and general atmosphere in P3 was just felt alot more compelling: Having those deadlines just added a little more weight and urgency, having that one tower seemed alot more daunting and mysterious to find out what is at the very top and the in-between scenarios were just alot more engaging: from that whorehouse, the dead train carriage and other occult elements that took place in different areas outside of P4s TV.

None of that is simplification, it's simply change. :|

Arguing about the differences of 3/FES and 4 is a lesson in futility since it ultimately doesn't matter. Those games are hugely dumbed down from the god game SMT: Nocturne and its disciplies DDS 1 and 2. lol the Persona games even have a lame battle system that pales in comparison to the Press Turn system. Nevermind that the actual artstyle in Persona 3 and 4 is meant to appeal to Japanophiles and otakus and can't hold a handle to Kazuma Kaneko's amazing designs.

lol your last line is pretty funny. Questioning my credibility because I don't circle-jerk the Persona series like others, lol.

Oh my, your tastes in cartoons is so unconventional. You must be an interesting person.

But it is true. The new anime art-style for the Megaten games now pales in comparison to the previous works. Look at Persona or Devil Surrvivor, then play nocturne and compare.

I actually liked P3 FES more than 4. P4 might have had its persona elements alot more intertwined. The structure and general atmosphere in P3 was just felt alot more compelling: Having those deadlines just added a little more weight and urgency, having that one tower seemed alot more daunting and mysterious to find out what is at the very top and the in-between scenarios were just alot more engaging: from that whorehouse, the dead train carriage and other occult elements that took place in different areas outside of P4s TV.illmatic87
Me too. It's true that P4 improved and mastered the gameplay to a certain extend, but P3 and FES just did everything else so much better. I especially agree with the sense of ungency that P3 was always reminding you that your time was counted to do anything.
