"I fully expect that you’ll see another console from us. Our best customers are Xbox console customers, and I want to keep those people engaged both on the Xbox One and anything we might do in the future. I’m 100 percent committed to that."

SOURCE

Well, I guess that right there explicitly answers that question. Spencer has previously said that the Xbox brand will continue and has a future, but many Sony fans took that to believe that the Xbox brand would live on as a software or streaming service, and not as dedicated hardware. I guess this right here very clearly lays those theories to rest.

What would you really expect him to say? You don't want to hurt sales of current console. Whether or not they make another console....they wouldn't address it right now.

Good to hear. Somebody needs to keep Sony on their toes. They're already starting to give less ****s about the consumer. Can't imagine what would happen without Microsoft as competition.

He doesn't make those decisions, it's irrelevant what he says. Those decisions are taken from the top.

Consoles are not dying yet confirmed. Interesting to see how MS will continue merging Xbox and Windows.

@DressYouUp: I think after this gen that will be a major priority! But also Sony realizes how important it is to gamers to be "more powerful" even if it literally means nothing, it still makes headlines.

@charizard1605: god... Ninty needs a rebound so bad. I have all my fingers crossed, I pray and I send carrier pigeons with notes of support to Nintendo headquarters, but reading your NX thread, makes me realize they're either going to truly achieve the potential of what the vita could've been as a side car to the ps4 or they're gonna do some gimmicky Nintendo madness that will be an instant turnoff.

I've also come to understand that Nintendo may never return to MY Nintendo.... That Kung fu sequel may never happen... We're not getting a new ice climbers or proper kid icarus, but I want them in the fight.

@TheEroica: It's make or break time for them, that's for sure.

Personally, I foresee a Windows 7->Windows 8->Windows 10 kind of Wii->Wii U->NX rebound for them with the NX.

@charizard1605: what makes you feel that way? From a hardware perspective, releasing a more powerful console while Sony and Ms are all in on their latest offering is smart, but software wise, and please don't take offense, I'm not buying a new Mario Kart or smash bro. I need to see new ip and franchise resurrected from MY Nintendo roots to feel like the tides are turning in their favor.

@TheEroica: Multiple things. A more powerful, less gimmicky console that finally embraces online and unifies their handheld and console development, that's one. Nintendo bringing back their older, dormant franchises like Star Fox and Metroid is another. And as for new IPs, they've finally started doing that- Xenoblade, The Wonderful 101, and Splatoon are all great Nintendo new franchises, and I see them trying more, especially given how successful Xenoblade and especially Splatoon have been for them.

It seems like Nintendo understand where it went wrong with the Wii U, and is eager to not repeat those mistakes with the NX. That's why I have an intuition that they're gonna rebound with the NX.

This may apply to xbox as well, one being the slip. If next ps and xbox were to release at same time I'd be amazed if sony's one turned out to be more advanced one.

Maybe. You are not taking into account departmental budgetary constraints.

Microsoft making more money as a whole does not guarantee more money for the Xbox division- in fact, given that the PS4 is one of Sony's only money making products, and far more important to the company centrally than the Xbox One does or is for Microsoft, I would wager that the PlayStation department has more money than the Xbox department- even if Microsoft could buy Sony out multiple times over, and not bat an eyelid.

@charizard1605: the online component is so key... Like, I'm almost willing to say if you're not going to develop an actual online service with modern gamers in mind, then don't do it at all... I've heard they keep it purposely less invasive for kids... But then 30 million kid gamers just buy an Xbox 360 so they can play minecraft together.

Nope.

It will, for a number of reasons:

- Microsoft actually have a competent in-house hardware division these days

- Not having superior multiplats has hurt their bottom line

- Kinect is no longer a priority; resources will be funneled directly into the console hardware

- Reigniting their relationship with nVidia, whose gpus power Surface Book

- Rumours of an AMD acquisition

- Stacked RAM R&D

- New CEO

- Phil Spencer now in charge or Xbox operations

Oh and lots of money.

@TheEroica: I agree. And hey, you've got some very good parental controls you build into your machines- have faith in them and build the rest of the online experience unimpeded. Don't compromise it for the rest of us for no reason, is what I say.

Nintendo at least recognizes its incompetence with online networks- that's why it has outsourced the development of Nintendo Network from now on to an external company that does specialize in network programming.

When you have the capital you also have the ability to help those departments of your company that need more support, you have seen MS do this exact thing before.

Well it's a completly rhetorical scenario because, UNLIKE YOURSELF, I don't have access to this special cow crystal ball.

It will be more powerful, it's not a question. They can't make the same mistake twice, the exact same way Sony approached the PS4 after the dire PS3.

@charizard1605: smart of them for that... Just focus on games and hardware, if that's their passion. Let someone else worry about the online service being great...

As for parental control, I'm all for it. I have kids and I wouldn't mind these companies being even MORE invasive with parental control... Especially in the digital age where I can't hide my games quite as easily.

A Nintendo console that allows for a tradition analog and dpad, and handheld extension, that also plays it's current library and is supported by its virtual store is really an enticing thing to me. I just really need those new IP's and a break from their money makers.

If they launch the console right this time, it could do well. They're building a lot of good will right now.

Now all we need is for Nintendo to hit the NX out of the park.

What they say today =/= what they do tomorrow. Nothing has been answered for any company. Haven't people learned this by now?

Hell, Spencer may not be with the company or a different division when the Xbox 4 releases.

I do believe there will be another Xbox (for completely different reasons), but I don't believe any company PR. Their job is to sell machines now, and give consumers confidence in the brand.

No company will deliberately tarnish the brand (clearly it happens, but it's not deliberate), especially when trying to mount a "comeback".

The fact that this needs to be stated is just idiotic. The Xbox has been a successful brand post-OG.

God knows where consoles will head in terms of being straight up local gaming machines, but assuming the Xbox One would be MS' last foray into the market is just silly.

Why is it so hard to title something honestly? He EXPECTS another XB. He makes no definitive declaration.

But it is pretty funny that he feels the need to try and reassure people two years in.

As a student of human psychology I have never seen such mass insecurity like sony fanboys exhibit in regards to the Xbox brand. They talk about it so much, wish for its death knowing full well its illogical to want less competition in any industry. I even had a discussion at length last year in psych class with the professor and it really piqued his interest.
