No proof, he doesn't even seem annoyed, and he even says it himself that the source he's claiming isn't accurate.

The piracy of Hotline: Miami is well known. The devs even went to the Pirate Bay and provided a patched version because they didn't want people to play a bugged one that was uploaded.

"Struthers said he is not aware of specific piracy figures for Hotline Miami, but regardless, he is not particularly perturbed by the illegal downloading. In fact, developer Jonatan Söderström even released a legitimate patch for pirated versions of Hotline Miami because "he didn't want people playing the buggy version of his game however they got it."" True developer support, what a great guy! Any pirates you should be ashamed, support gaming and esp great devs!

That isn't proof, and like he said himself, the pirate bay isn't accurate at all for this game especially.

What exactly are you arguing. That this game wasn't attacked by piracy, or his claim of how many times it was pirated?

So this game was never pirated...that's just as baseless as his claim and I'm more inclined to believe him because its' a very easy game to go pirate.

There's such a crowd? He obviously did nothing to deserve his game getting pirated but ugh people like stuff free, so go figure.

Keep in mind, this is the developer who offered troubleshooting advices about the game on torrent sites...

http://kotaku.com/5955066/they-pirated-his-game-but-this-developer-is-giving-tech-support-anyway

Every game, both on PC and on consoles gets pirated to an extent, but if you go ahead and make a move like this, well, you're basically saying:

"Go ahead and pirate our game, we don't want your money, and we have no problems with it!"

Not the best decision from a business standpoint, wouldn't you agree?

That's not really what he's saying though. He gave them a new patch because he didn't want people to play a buggy version of the game and bad mouth it, which could ruin potential sales. I don't necessarily agree with them for giving pirates a patch, but if they care about the quality of their game that much, so be it. It's just a shame that this game was only $10 and people weren't willing to give it a go legally. It's a great game and it's been on sale quite a few times for $5. Buy it and support indie devs...

Also, I haven't played it yet, but I'm planning to get it from GoG when I have a time for a playthrough...

The publisher actually said that the game has ben widely pirated, not the dev. The dev. aren't that bothered considering they released a damn patch for the pirated version, and they knew that their game would be pirated because it's common sense - a)relatively popular, and b) small in size.

Nothing is 'annihilated' or some dramatic sh*t like that. One would wonder how pirated Minecraft was, or how many gamers are playing their console modded. Everything gets pirated to some degree, you moron of a thread starter.

May as well quote more another important part:

Struthers said he is not aware of specific piracy figures for Hotline Miami, but regardless, he is not particularly perturbed by the illegal downloading. In fact, developer Jonatan Söderström even released alegitimate patchfor pirated versions of Hotline Miami because "he didn't want people playing the buggy version of his game however they got it."

Gamespot Article

----

Does it suck? Yes.

Do they have piracy rates? No.

Does it annihalate this exclusive? We don't know.

More sensationalist sh*t, please.

It's also sold north of 130,000 copies, which is pretty staggering considering it's not exactly the most marketable indie game.

Its still like 45th in the top sellers on steam. And i don't see how you can link this to (PC pirates). Any PC would play this game and any nobody can go to a torrent site and download it. Even if this game was on console a console gamer could still just download it for PC because they can. Yet PC gamers would be blamed for all the Piracy.

Piracy is everywhere.

Crawling to console, but the best version of their games all on PC. PC , more exclusives than all 4 current consoles combined this gen alone.

I think there's a difference between indies and AAA devs in terms of piracy. For an indie developer, the goal is to get people playing your game and thus you can use it to promote your body of work while you try to sell ideas to a AAA publisher or join a developer. It's, in a way, a resume builder. Since they probably weren't spending $500,000 to make their game, having an audience is the most important thing. If they make a ton of money off it, so bet it. That likely wasn't the goal is you were making an indie game (but the success of MineCraft has sort of changed that). For someone like EA or Ubisoft, who puts hundreds of thousands -- even millions -- of dollars into their game and marketing, they need people to buy the product. They have investments they need to return on and sales markers they need to hit. Piracy prevents that and thus it hurts their bottom line. So to them, piracy is the worst thing in the world because it could lead to the closure of a studio, the loss of an IP or even the loss of investors.

TC, your topic title is misleading.

Did you even read this part:"Struthers said he is not aware of specific piracy figures for Hotline Miami, but regardless, he is not particularly perturbed by the illegal downloading. In fact, developer Jonatan Söderström even released alegitimate patchfor pirated versions of Hotline Miami because "he didn't want people playing the buggy version of his game however they got it."

Or this one: "The company also revealed sales statistics to the site, confirming the game has sold 130,000 copies since launch in late October"

Fail thread, and your title is a flat out lie. The game has been a huge financial success for the company, and while they spoke of "staggering" levels of piracy (aided by themselves putting a copy up on torrents) they never claimed any harm at all. Now go have a good cry about it.

It doesn't make it alright though. Piracy is everywhere and in every entertainment industry -- it's not going to go away. I for one am glad Hotline still sold well, but if I were in their shoes I'd be a little perturbed that my $10 game was pirated. It's not like these people are EA and forcing DRM on you at $60 a game.

Consolites just don't understand... Everything is pirated.

Pretty much this. This is a pretty huge success for an indie game. Also a lot of games get pirated if they don't look that good and people are unsure wheter to get it or not, they use it as a demo. Just look at thee most pirated system in history, the PSP: There were still big publishers (like SE) that made profit on PSP games

Make a quality game that is cheap and hermits will buy it. That's what hermits told me.Sushiglutton

Did anybody say that piracy would not happen were the quality game cheap enough?
