I respect the fact that this game strives to be more than its medium, and for a game released in the 90's it was ahead of its time, but..

Its just so self-consiously philisophical. it insists upon itself. very heavy-handed with its storytelling (which I mostly enjoy) but at times when I'm playing I feel like members of black isle are sitting behind me saying 'isn't this brilliant? aren't we geniuses? this is ****in' art man, now lets all pat eachother on the back'

This is a great game but not the best story ever told in games like most people say. It lacks the subtlety in its storytelling that games like Silent Hill 2 and SoTC have in spades.

No matter how good a game is, if it gets constant praise some one out there will say it's over rated.

The only beef I have with the game is the ending. Your choices did not matter. Is it the greatest WRPG narrative? Maybe, its sure the best written. However, I think its not the best WRPG of all time as many claim. Its not as groundbreaking as Ultima IV or VII, influential as Fallout, or as complete as Baldur's Gate II. The choice and consquence ha seen done better in The Witcher as well.

I haven't played Planescape, but I have a feeling it won't be as good as some people claim. Anyway, prepare to defend your opinion TC, it'd come in handy soon. lol

Edit: Correction, it'd come in handy now actually.

It's not. Planescape broke every single cliche of RPGs. Like rats are one of the strongest enemies in the game, usually you kill rats early in an RPG because they're weak. Death is also a tool instead of failure.

I think you misspelled Metal Gear Solid.

DarkLink77

How clever

Can't you guys just say "you're wrong" without having to start the MGS bashing in a totally unrelated thread. And Planescape's story WISHES it was as deep, complex, and detailed as MGS's.

Convoluted is much more defining for a series like MGS. As someone who loved Snake Eater, the MGS storyline is idiotically complex.

He's talking about being pretentious. I can't think of a much more pretentious franchise than Metal Gear Solid. He said this, "Its just so self-consiously philisophical. it insists upon itself. very heavy-handed with its storytelling (which I mostly enjoy) but at times when I'm playing I feel like members of black isle are sitting behind me saying 'isn't this brilliant? aren't we geniuses? this is ****in' art man, now lets all pat eachother on the back' ". Whether a game is pretentious or not depends on the player's opinion. Alot of people swear up and down that Braid is extremely pretentious. That doesn't mean that it is though.

It's just the writing in general. The IDEAS behind the plot are cool. The writing/storytelling itself is atrocious.

Well if they can't prove that he is wrong, the best way to DC is to divert attention toward something else, and in other cases post a funny picture. Happens a lot in SW.

As a MGS fan I can tell you that only applies for 4 though... the rest of the series is just fine, but 4 has serious problems indeed.

From Dictionary.com:

pre·ten·tious

[pri-ten-shuhs] –adjective

1. full of pretense or pretension.

2. characterized by assumption of dignity or importance.

3. making an exaggerated outward show; ostentatious.

Lines 2 and 3 sum up MGS as a series almost perfectly.

Having read Atlus Shrugged nothing seems pretentious any more. Well, except that.

Some sections of dialogue in Planescape were a bit contrived though,
and frankly the part where the Enlightened one turns up for the first time dosn't make sense. He was supposed to be confined to a single place, he could not have been there.
. The ending also kind of sucked. Apart from that it's not really pretentious at all.
I don't see what's the big fuss. Planescape Torment IS pretentious. It's possibly the greatest RPG ever, but it's story is a bit pretentious. Metal gear Solid is more pretentious though and it's writing is nowhere near the quality of Planescape and Braid? don't even get me started on Braidtexasgoldrush
PT isn't complete enough to be the greatest RPG ever....I view Ultima iV, VII, Fallout 1 and 2, Baldur's Gate II as better. I enjoyed Arcanum more as well.

That's irrelevant. If someone enjoys Planescape more then it's fair enough to say it's the greatest RPG to them. Besides games like BG2 were full of cliches, and frustratingly tedious dialogue. Those games might have been designed better, but in terms of everything except gameplay design they weren't as well directed.

BG2 did have a great story overall and a great villian...the expansion was more cliched. BG2's ending was also better and more satisfying than PTs. The writing is no where near as good as planescape, however, gameplay is important. Thats why BG2 is one of the most critically acclaimed RPGs of all time, more acclaimed than Planescape. Ultima IV isn't my fave game, but it is in my view, one of the greatest RPGs ever made.
