I don't get the MGS4 hate. it is unjustly hated on just like 2 was

well... that's timely.DarkStraberryTo the extent maybe that Assassin's Creed is corny and pretentious, but.... Maybe it's timely to the extent that it's the second thread I disagree with strongly tonight.
And BTW, TC, you dun goofed up. The consequences will never be the same.
I really do not remember getting a pretentious vibe from planescape torment. But i also played the game back when it was released with no expectations since i knew nothing about the game at the time. Maybe you are just trying to find flaws with the game since its so universally praised.

I think you misspelled Metal Gear Solid.

How clever
Can't you guys just say "you're wrong" without having to start the MGS bashing in a totally unrelated thread. And Planescape's story WISHES it was as deep, complex, and detailed as MGS's.
*raises eyebrow*
Hmm... meh I've done my share of trash talking when it concerns MGS for the day(or MGS4 in this case).
I don't see what's the big fuss. Planescape Torment IS pretentious. It's possibly the greatest RPG ever, but it's story is a bit pretentious. Metal gear Solid is more pretentious though and it's writing is nowhere near the quality of Planescape and Braid? don't even get me started on Braidohthemanatee
Ugh Braid, God Braid. What the hell was up with that game? Don't get me wrong, I liked it and all, but... after going to the internet to kind of find out what the hell was going on after finishing it(which I've hardly ever done for a game), I still had to ask: WTF?
After hearing so many people praise the story of the game, that's still my take on it.
3rd option.
Spelling Every Single Word In The Title With A Capital Letter Just Makes You Appear Even Less Intelligent Than You Really Are.
Or maybe not after reading your initial post. l2blog.
*spoilers* I think the best aspects of it's story were mainly the stuff that were just about the Nameless One himself, such as the idea that he's essentially been many different "characters", due to how he often changes in personality when he dies, as well as lose his memory. It was also interesting finding out stuff he done in that past as his other selves.
But for the most part, I didn't think the story was that special to be honest. It could be that I'm just not a fantasy guy, but most of it seemed like fetch quest stuff- having the protagonist run around, talk to someone to just finding out maybe one or two bits of information, then running somewhere else to meet another person. The only thing I really cared about was finding out the secrets behind the protagonist himself, the rest of the plot was largely a blur.
It was also kind of disappointing to find out that it was a witch that had been the reason for your immortality- I was hoping for something really mind-bending and unique, and an old hunchback witch doesn't really strike me as that. It was still a good story, especially for a video game, but it just feels like- with the incredibly unique protagonist that they had, that they could have made something better.
They'd still say the same thing even if MGS4 was on PC. In fact, 1 and 2 ARE on PC.I love how people can't say "you're wrong" without bashing console games

I love MGS, but it's story is a complete mess.[QUOTE="tagyhag"]It insists upon itself? Sorry bub, Planescape still has one of the best stories in video game history (Yes that's not saying much when looking at video games in general but it doesn't mean it's a bad story)JangoWuzHereNo...Planescape Torment is THE best storyline in a video game. I say Grim Fandango...more charm and better ending.

never played grim fandango, but i loved the ending in PS:T, loved that it didnt take the cliched video game happy ending route.
I haven't actually played it, but I've heard it has tons of text, so yeah. I like to play games, not read them :P

however, it didn't take player choice into account...thats the problem. It has the "why the hell did I do this?" feeling.I must say the Ending of PST is underwhelming, but the whole story is superb.
It's the writing behind NPC,quests and denizens that make it an amazing narrative experience.
There is a dialog with a mage when you have completed her tasks in order to become an apprentice mage.
I've forgotten the exact text but it was superb.

Seriously its one of the best endings ever. Not to mention you can also tackle it in multiple ways including talking the TTO into suicide. i never got this. whats so convoluted about MGS storyline? it seems like youre just regurgitating the same crap everyone else says
Eh. Haven't played much of it... never really interested me that much.
If you think Shadow of the Colossus' story is well told, you need to spend some time with Prince of Persia [2008] and a textbook on Zoroastrianism.

I've played all the games (bar Peace Walker). I know what I'm talking about. MGS 2, in particular was the most confusing plotline I have ever experienced in a game. 75% was exposition, that dumped obtuse layer after layer of plot on you before you could even begin to react to the last big reveal. It was an absolute mess. MGS 1 was fine, but 3 got messy and so did 4, and when you look at the series plotline as a whole, it's not pretty. I just can't see how even the biggest MGS fan could sit there and tell me that it doesn't have a convoluted plot. I love the games, I enjoyed all of the them. The overarching story is a mess. End of.i generally stay away from commenting on MGS since the only one i played was 2... but the ridiculous story completely ruined what i otherwise thought was a fun game. MGS2 is also the reason i have never bothered with another MGS title, it really soured me on the series. I always just assumed the rest of them were just as ridiculous.

Nah, MGS2 is the worst by a long way. MGS 1 and 3 are fantastic games, with MGS1's story, as long as you look at it by itself, is very good.Somewhere between possession by hand transplant, metal gear arsenal, more foxdie, military in fighting the patriots and the legacy of zero. MGS3 and MG1 had fantastic narratives. MGS2 became a mess and MGS4's reliance on obtrusive cut scenes alone speaks volumes of how much of a mess it became. Sure I understood it and it was essentially fixing the mess of a plot that had been created, however it wasn't well told. Kojima had dug himself into a pit really, it's admirable he got out.i never got this. whats so convoluted about MGS storyline? it seems like youre just regurgitating the same crap everyone else says

Subtlety? I guess Shadow of Colossus has that, because it's got very little story. I guess novels must be a chore to read, too - I mean, with all those words just dumped out the page they're not very subtle either.DJ_Lae

Why not judge it for yourselves? It's only my favourite game ever :P
I hate when people assume that the majority of the minds behind great stories are so egocentric. I believe more writers are saying "Hope people enjoy my ideas and what messages I'm delivering" instead of "man I'm an effin genius for this idea".

Well, gog.com have just redeemed themselves for that going out of business stunt they pulled. Long live Planescape!
