Playing a Wii game on 720p TV would be the same effect as if you were playing a Xbox 360/PS3 game on a 1080p TV. It looks ugly.....and blurry.ShadowDeathX
Most Graphics of the year awards are on the HD consoles. you Mad?
We play Wii games on a 32" 720p TV. They look okay, pehaps a bit blurry if I take the time to stare long and hard close up. Good enough for me.

Anyone with an eye or two, can see that Best Graphics aren't on consoles.[QUOTE="ShadowDeathX"]Playing a Wii game on 720p TV would be the same effect as if you were playing a Xbox 360/PS3 game on a 1080p TV. It looks ugly.....and blurry.lundy86_4
The upscaling is there, but when I play 360/PS3 games on my 1080p TV, they still look good.
Ugly and good are subjective, I guess.Do you have the component cables for the 480 sigal? It does make a slight difference. My son has his hooked to a 32in Samsung and it does look slightly better with the component HD hookups.
This is what SSBB looks like on our old 32" 720p TV using regular composite. It'll probably look better with component RGB.
Please, My N64 looks great on HDTV. And while we on the subject, I'll hooked up the NES/SNES/Genesis/PS1/PS2 to see how they would looked on a HDTV.Unfortunately, the Wii and an HD TV are not the best of combinations as the Wii is not an HD system. But it's not too bad.

It depends on the tv. I'm playing Twilight Princess at the moment and I was surprised at how good it looks. Also, for some odd reason--and from my experience--wii/gamecube/etc tend to favor Plasma tvs over lcds.
Definetely get component cables. That gets rid of the muddy feeling you get in 480i.
Another thing is the TV. I'm playing on a 65' TV and it looks better than what it did on my 42' BRAVIA. I'd imagine some TVs have software to fix up a lot of the problems with SDTV sources.
galaxy 1 and 2 are the only games that look passable on a hd display, imo.MFDOOM1983
No way! I've testing out some of my gamecube games--THEY look good. If anybody played older console games dating back to the nes, they won't have a problem with the image.

Well, here's a sample of what PS2 games look like on a 1080p HDTV (aka my 24" monitor) . I'm also using regular composite cables. I probably should've set my camera to sports mode. Still looks okay to me. That's why I refuse to get rid of my PS2.

My only problem is the 4:3 aspect ratio for a lot of games. For Twilight Princess I'm using the option that gradually stretches the image, and it works quite well. Not all games cater to this though and I can't seem to find an option on my tv that turns those grey bars, black.
*sigh*
Looks like I'll be picking up some component cables tomorrow.
PatchMaster
i got mine of ebay for like $3
but...i doubt you wanna wait for them to come in the mail....so that'll be like $20+ in the store, lol...retail stores rip people off so bad with HDMI and component cables

What does playing nes games back in the day have anything to do with wii games looking like a jaggie pixelated mess? I don't know about you but i wasn't playing nes games on a 50In HDTV back then. Red steel 2 and muramasa(two games i forgot to mention) also look good but sin & punishment looks like a budget ps2 game from 02. As long as the game stays away from realism it should look alright.[QUOTE="Merex760"][QUOTE="ShadowDeathX"]Playing a Wii game on 720p TV would be the same effect as if you were playing a Xbox 360/PS3 game on a 1080p TV. That is a lot of black empty space...
What are you talking about? Black empty space? I'm playing InFamous 2 (720p game) on my 1080p native LCD monitor and I'm not seeing any black empty space:?
Agreed. Component cables at least allow 480p. Just to note to OP, youhave to change the settings on the wii to both wide screen AND 480p seperately if you have the component cables. If you're using the composite calbes (just yellow cable for video) then you still ahve to set the wii to widescreen in the options menu. It will look fine in 480i also but better in 480p.Component cables. Best purchase I made for my Wii :P

Wii over component on my 600Hz Viera plasma looks fantastic. I hear LCD makes it look like crap though.foxhound_foxYou heard wrong. LCD looks just fine.

LCD panels have outclassed plasma for the past two years or so.
Though if you actually care about picture quality, I'd suggest going projection.

The issue with Wii graphics on the best-of-the-best displays is that there's simply a lack of "information" to fill the picture. It's like taking a small JPEG and stretching it to fill your entire computer screen, it doesn't work. As TVs get bigger and bigger (Best Buy has a 42" for $200 on Black Friday) that becomes more of a problem.
There is A TON more data and detail in the 720p consoles and 1080p PCs out there, and because of that, when you "stretch" that image to fill a bigger screen, it looks crisper. Your "HD" consoles also have some amount of anti-aliasing and anisiostrophic filtering, which the Wii doesn't do, which means the "jaggies" and distant textures qualities create issues.

I think most TV's nowadays will automatically stretch the image to fill the screen although it may look somewhat flat as shown with both the Wii and PS2 images I posted. It's more pronounced with the FIFA 09 PS2 image though. The players look stumpy rather than athletic. Oh well. I don't mind. We got rid of our CRT TVs. Plus, I'll get my kid's PS3 handed down to me whenever the new PS4 comes out.
