[QUOTE="Malta_1980"]me dont believe you were born in 1980 :)i think PS1 & PS2 are on par, though PS2 gets a slight edge in terms of quantity/quality... PS3 needs some more quantity, cause when it comes to quality imo its offerings were great specially in the past 2 yrs..

why is that?
These points might not be wholly true, but they are popular perceptions of the importance of the PS1.
1. PS1 came at the dawn of 3D gaming, so as the dominant system many of its games were bound to be regarded as revolutionary.
2. Nintendo had dominated gaming for the ten years prior to such an extent that many people knew game consoles as "Nintendos." The PS1 put an end to that.
3. Kids who owned a NES and graduated to an SNES were teenagers when the PS1 hit, they became the first generation to continue console gaming en mass as they grew up.
4. Since it was a slightly older demographic it required something more than Platformers and Platform-Action games to keep them interested, the PS1 was the first system where previously niche genres were popularized, such as JRPGs with their relatively complex narratives, or survival horror games with their more mature themes.
5. All systems since the PS1 have been living off its coat-tails in terms of IP (see list below). No system since has had anywhere near this much good, new IP. Ultimately, when you look at the PS1's library it's somewhat shocking to see most of its games are NOT sequels to games from some earlier system.
Major series that were born on the PS1 or whose first game were ports to the PS1, and were given sequels on the PS2, PS3, or other systems:
Gran Turismo, Spyro, Crash, Metal Gear Solid (There were Metal Gears on the NES, but I'm gonna go out on a limb and say solid is a different beast), Resident Evil, Twisted Metal, Tekken, Soul Blade (later evolved into Soul Calibur), Wipeout, Ridge Racer, Tomb Raider, Soul Reaver, Syphon Filter, Persona, Oddworld, Street Fighter EX, Street Fighter Alpha, Ape Escape, Driver, Tenchu, Klonoa, Grandia, Silent Hill, WWF Smackdown (evolved into today's Smackdown vs. Raw), Need for Speed, Dance Dance Revolution, Valkyrie Profile, Warhawk, Dead or Alive, Medal of Honor, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, Colin McRae Rally (Now known as Dirt), Suikoden, Time Crisis, Ace Combat, Tales of..., Harvest Moon, Guilty Gear, Dynasty Warriors, NFL Blitz, Bloody Roar, Vandal Hearts, Armored Core, King's Field, Front Mission (if you're an American anyway), Star Ocean (again, if you're American), Hot Shots Golf, Wild Arms, Brave Fencer Musashi, PaRappa, etc.
Some other important series or one-offs born on the PS1 that never really got remade: Xenogears, Fear Effect, Bushido Blade, Vagrant Story, Tomba, Colony Wars
I don't know whether any of this outweighs the massive market penetration of the PS2, which to me is its main claim to fame in the territories that already had an established console gaming tradition. Other things like it being the first "true" 3D system is nonsense, most of the games above are 3D games, the first "true" 3D game using a fully 3D engine was Descent in 1995, and even if the PS1 could somehow be denied the label "true" 3D game machine, it would certainly go to the N64 and DC, both of which were built pretty much exclusively with 3D gaming in mind.
As for its massive library, of the top 10 PS2 games according to Gamespot, 9 out of the 10 are sequels from series that got there start on an earlier system (most on the PS1, a couple on the DC). How many warriors games are there on the PS2, how many Armored Core Games? The PS2 has a lot of great games, more than the PS1, but to me the PS1 is clearly more important.

You forgot Medievil.
But wow. I couldnt of said it any better.
Sure the PS2 has more games than the PS1 and sold more, thanks to everything the PS1 did to the market beforehand, but of course, the PS1 is clearly more important.
PS2 is backwards compatible :o Now as far as PS2 ruined the PS1 franchises....
Ratchet and Clank >Spyro
Jak and Daxter > Crash
Sly Cooper > Croc
Tomb Raider... yeah it was ruined but I didn't like the series to begin with.
MGS, Now Metal Gear was not ruined it, though I still count MGS1 as my favourite I would hardly call MGS2 & MGS3 crappy games in the series, they are WIN!
RE, well I see what you mean and I somewhat agree but RE4 was definitely a breath of fresh and to a formula which was rotting like zombies in the game.
Silent Hill, I totally disagree, SH2&3 are far better then the original Silent Hill. I don't know why you think otherwise but the PS3 Silent Hill games had so much more atmosphere and scares.
FF, Well not ruined but PS1 FF games were better, PS2 sequels were also really enjoyable so I don't agree with PS2 ruining FF.

On top of that the PS2 had a lot more quality franchises and innovative experiences...
PS2 is definitely superior to the PS1, I hope you realise this now :)
By the end of this gen PS3 would have pwnd PS2 in terms of quality titles :o
