As a gamer on a budget trying to get into the new generation, I find myself limited to being able to afford only one console. Up until now, I've been a Playstation guy. Last generation, I chose the PS2 simply because I had PS1 games to play on it. I realize now that that isn't a good reason to choose a new system; just keep the old one and you're fine.

Now that the new generation is here, I'm SERIOUSLY considering jumping ship and get a 360. I mean, it just has the games I wanna play (Gears just blew my mind) and XBOX live looks like a HUGE plus for XBOX. However, before I put down my hard earned cash, I have a few concerns about the system that I'd like your, my fellow gamers, thoughts on.

My biggest concern is the failure rate of 360s. If I get a system, I want it to work. I can NOT afford to get a replacement system. Have any of your 360s failed and how did you resolve the problem? Were you satisfied? I know that Microsoft recently upped the warranty to 3 years, but I'm still very nervous about getting a system with such a high failure rate.

Your thoughts and advice would be appreciated.

If you're a real PlayStation guy, then PS3 would be the one to buy, it's future line up reflects that of PS2's library so I assume that would satisfy you the most.

I've had a 360 since launch and it has not scratched one disc or had the red lights. If you are thinking about getting a 360, wait for a couple weeks when the price drop is announced.

being on a budget, the 360 should be your best bet. with the ammount of cheap new and used games out there, your money will take you farther with the 360. i just got NBA live 07, NHL 2k7, battlestations: midway, and bullet witch for 20 bucks a peice.

I have the same doubts as u, i have a ps2, i bought it cuz it had a huge library of games and cuz i had a ps1, i knew i was gonna like it so it was the obvious choice. But now the ps3 is really not what i was expecting so i wont be getting it for a year or 2, i really want to get the 360 but i dont want to get the red eye thingy :? and waste my money, so maybe I'll get the Elite which supposedly doesnt have such problem but i dont know that for sure.

My 360 failed, I got a new one within a week. And that was before any kind of real return policy. The failure rate issue isn't as big as some want it to appear, and when it does fail there's now a tasty 3 year warranty. If you enjoyed the PS2 for it's 1st party titles it'd probably a good idea to think about a PS3 more, but the 360 seems like it has a much brighter future in the 3rd party zone.

Are the old chips what's causing all the failures?

It was more a fault in the motherboard design. The new chips are more energy efficient and produce less heat and hence require less fan power meaning a quieter console. The older 360s are hardly the quietest consoles ever, but I've found that I've barely noticed any sound while playing games. Try someone else's 360 and judge for yourself if it's too loud.

It is very likely you will encounter a faulty 360 vs a faulty any other console ever created. Gears was a 10 hr game got boring. Though Mass effect looks good many good 360 games coming out also.

Ps3 is probably the best option considering all that will come. What it has to offer atm is small but soon this month even there will be killer games coming and it wont stop.

The optical drives are faulty as well the lens touches the disc as it spins causeing scratches. Mines been in for repairs twice for this.

I was talking about typical red light failures :P

Well if you already own a PS2 you should probably consider going with the PS3. Many of the great games on the 360 are ending up on the PS3 (Oblivion, GRAW, Rainbow Six), also many more games are multiplat. As for exclusives, the PS3 has some really promising ones if you are willing to take a risk.

The online is free and you get Home with that for no added cost (which if you are into something like that is a great deal).

The failure rate of the PS3 is very low. The PS3 is one well built system. The PS3 also has Blu-Ray so you would be set with a Blu-Ray player for the next generation of movies. If you don't have a HDTV you defeantly are set when you buy one.

Overall the future looks very bright for the PS3. Sure it is expensive, but if you are intrested in using any of the extra features the PS3 offers, the PS3 is defeantly the best way to go right now.

The 360 has a lot of great games already and it would be a less of a risk to buy a 360. But as previous posters have stated, you might as well wait for the new 65nm chip to be put in the 360. You will run a much less risk of your 360 breaking.

Get the 360 if you are really concerned that it will fail wait until the new improved chips are installed and then buy it. Until then stick with your ps2.

What about the Bluetooth controller disconnects I heard about right after the PS3 launched? Has this problem happened to anyone? Has the problem been fixed? I really can't find much information about it anymore...

If you get the HDDVD add on, it will cost virtually as much as the 80 gig PS3 (and more than the current 60 gig).

XBL Gold isn't free, and assuming you don't get the add-on, it will still cost about as much in the long run as the PS3.

If you don't want either feature, the 360 would be best. If you want just one feature, they'reeven. If you want both features, the PS3 is best. Unless you're asheep, this gen isn't very good for those on a budget.

I don't own a PS3 but I do own a 360, and I can tell you right now, nothing can be worse than 3 360's failing on you, also I bought a controller charger and it doesn't even work, I HAVE to use disposable batteries, or I can't play the 360, besides the faults though the 360 is a qaulity console, but if you decide to get a 360, I'd wait until these problems start to go away.

I own a PS3 and can highly reccomend it, despite only seeing my friends 360's in action (apart from stuff on the net), He also tells me that his XB360 is not as reliable as his PS3. I don't know if this is true. Can anyone confirm?

Really, neither are particularly great at the moment. The 360 has a lot of games, but is unreliable. The PS3 is reliable, but has very few games. Either way, my advice would be to wait, for either more games or the PS3, or the whole new hardware thing with the 360.

A big part of having a PS3 is being able to play all of your PS2 games still. PS2s also have a high failure rate... if your system is old, and breaks, you may as well buy a PS3.

Since you are asking the question from a gamer point of view:

Get the 360, lots of great games to play right now and in the near future. If you are afraid of the failure rate, know that there is a 3 year warranty, and if you want to get it replaced quickly, buy the warranty that EB or Best Buy offers, they basically give you a brand new system if or when yours breaks, no waiting. I've had mine for over a year now, and still no problems, Thank God.

If you do decide to get a PS3, wait until next year to buy one, there will probably be another price drop, or bigger hard drive by then for the same price. Not worth buying right now as a game machine, however as a DVD and Blu Ray player, it is excellent.

Don't worry there is a 3 year waranty now so even if it fails it will get replaced.
