The Playstation 3 is driving me crazy in this way in particular: five of the highest profile Playstation 3 games have only ONE MODE OF PLAY, be it single or multi player.

Of the announced, upcoming titles, four are singleplayer only: Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Lair, and Heavenly Sword.

And then there's Warhawk, which is multiplayer only.

This could end up being a lot of wasted money for what could possibly be an extremely limited amount of gaming time. When looking at most of these titles, I was expecting a fully fleshed, satisfying experience. Yet so many of them come in one flavor or another. Why can't there be more games like Resistance Fall of Man, with 30 giant singleplayer levels andlarge multiplayer maps with a multitude of play modes?

Because it's PS3... Developer's have realized the 360 is the way to go, that's why PS2 was a success compared to the original Xbox. It just came too late =/

While I would love for every game I buy to have two of well built modes. I mean, who doesn't want more? However, I would prefer one excellent mode to two mediocre ones. Also, some games just don't lend themselves to certain modes.

So your trying to say thats a bad thing? I can name tons of titles that were just single player games that turned out amazing and are some of the greatest games of all time. The fact is, alot of u ppl who think that online gaming is the only way to bring a true gaming expirience are wrong. This is why most online games will be mostly shooters, because they cant add every damn genre of gaming into online gaming, because there are way more ppl that enjoy single player games then online games. Online is just for those certain age ppl who like enjoying games with other ppl. Heck look at Zelda, Final Fantasy 7, Mario, Metal Gear Solid, Ninja Gaiden, God of War, Devil May Cry, Gran Turismo, Tekken, Soul Calibur, Metroid Prime, Grand Theft Auto, and many other great titles out there, they never needed online to show just how great of a game they were. And even if they did, yeah it would be a cool feature, but ppl would buy the game regaurdless if they were online or not online because the games are great no matter what.

Since when does a game need singleplayer and multiplayer to be good? Was RE4 terrible because it didn't have a "satisfying multiplayer experience?" :?

I find this hard to really care much about. Okami and SotC were both amazing games, I didn't finish them and then complain that I didn't get an online mode as well. Same with GoW2 and many other games. People are getting a ridiculous expectation that every game needs multiplayer to be good. I prefer a game with a great single player content to a game with ok single player and ok multi player. BF2 is a prime example of how Warhawk could be great as well, on the multiplayer only side of the spectrum. And don't say bots were available in BF2, no one bought the game to play the single player against bots.

The devs said so... They wanted to focus on a good single player. But the first and second R&C did fine without multiplayer so I guess the TC shouldn't be worring too much about this game...

Yes, you might want to add that the new R&C is going back to more of an adventure theme rather then shooter. A regression if you will. So i don't see a problem with no mp.

No, no, no, you don't get it. These developers are first party. Given your icon, you should know that. Ratchet and Clank is a first party. The only title I listed that is third party is Lair. That leaves four other games with only one playing mode.

The first parties cannot develop for the Xbox 360. They develop exclusively for the Playstation 3. Therefore, my question is still valid and your criticism isn't. Don't try to give me nonsensical answers, please. If these guys WANTED to, they could have made these games single player and multiplayer. Take a look at Resistance: like I said, 30 single player levels, AND 40 player online. These guys OPTED OUT of multiplayer/singleplayer.

Warhawk devs: we wanted to focus on multiplayer.

Ratchet devs: we wanted to focus on singleplayer

Uncharted devs: we wanted to focus on singleplayer, all the way through!

So precisely what is the problem here? My question is not why they individually chose to do this, it's why they did it en masse. Don't tell me that first parties, who have a stake in Sony's reputation and sales, would possibly sabotauge Sony's operation by releasing a single playing mode intently.

That's fair. Perhaps I prejudged. I was just counting the number of titles and I got confused, I guess. Doesn't seem to make sense when it doesn't seem like a huge strain to make a few multiplayer modes, whether offline or online, from co-op to deathmatch, you know? They're both relatively simple game modes, but add SO much more value and depth.

I can understand completely the Warhawk situation, however.

Actually literally every game has XBL support of some kind, it has to for it to get through MS's cerification process.

Anyhow it depends on the game. Great games that have a solid singleplayer/multiplayer doesn't need the other mode, but games like Lair and Uncharted, that are apparently 10-12 hours long are a joke if they don't have MP. Especially Lair, that game is screaming for some online play.

MGSIV has online, and I'm sure GT5 will have online.

To be honest, I don't care about online that much. But I am excited about Haze online.

I think the bare minimum is to provide DLC, achievements are a different story but are still part of the certification deal. Most games have online play though unless it simply wouldn't work (oblivion comes to mind).

Here's a suggestion. Wait for next year's version of these games. I'm sure they will add online for R&C and co-op online for Uncharted. Wait more.

Sony may be trying to take the industry somewhere else with only a sole mode of gameplay. Just give the player a single player or multiplayer experience that is so good. It can only be found on the PS3. An outstanding game may only be accomplished by focusing on one mode of gameplay. Alot of games have gained critical acclaim by doing the same. Just look at God Of War 2

When I purchase a video game, I buy it mainly for myself. Multi-player is fine in multi-player type games (racers, fighters, shooters) but it shouldn't be expected in every game.

The irony of this post is that, as I listed above, both Ratchet and Clank: ToD and Warhawk only have one mode. Ratchet and Clank is ONLY single player and Warhawk is ONLY multiplayer. And, as someone mentioned above, Socom is also multiplayer only.
