We want the truth! You can't handle the truth! Kidding with Jack Nicholson and a "Few Good Men" aside, what is the real deal with 1080p between the 2 systems?

A lot of the newer games coming out on the 360 are now stating that they could be played in 1080p; in fact the 1080p library of the 360 is pretty much double that of the PS3. Yet, a lot of those 360 games actually only "upscales" 720p resolution into looking 1080p, but in fact is not Native (aka real) 1080p.

PS3 on the other hand don't have as many games that state it could play 1080p (mostly Native 720p). But when the game says it does plays 1080p, these PS3 games are the better native 1080p resolution games. That was until a game like "Grand Theft Auto IV" managed to sneak through the PS3 library stating it plays 1080p but in reality has a much lower resolution; in fact lower than 720p @ just 640p.

A list of PS3 games that play in full 1080p from Wiki (so far there's about 30 native 1080p games): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_full_HD_1080P_PS3_games

A list of 360 games that play in full 1080p, though the site is 10 months outdated (only 3 native 1080p games so far): http://www.makeyougohmm.com/xbox360-1080p-games/

Though the 360 has over double the library of games that state could play in 1080p, it only has 3 games (so far) that plays Native 1080p. The PS3 on the other hand has most of its game library playing at Native 720p but has at least over 30 Native 1080p games.

Another difference between both systems is that the 360 can usually upscale its 720p games pretty well into 1080p (haven't read any complaints thus far). But the PS3 (after going through the XMB settings since PS3 games love its 720p default), have a few issues trying to upscale from 720p, since most upscaled to 1080p games tend to look slightly inferior to it's default 720p setting; and some Native 1080p games somehow looses texture when played in 1080p - i.e. "Dead Space".

So how would we know if these new games that both companies are coming out with are REAL 1080p games?

For those who own both systems, regarding graphical look, is it a bit aggravating to always be judging which version of the game to purchase?

Its simple. Both put out the full digital signal. Period. However it just depends if the game is native or not. Both will do native 1080p if programmed to.

That was an old thing, because the 360 did not have HDMI (now it does for all models I think), meaing you would have to get your 1080p through component cables and only a fraction of TV's can do that.

I think the real argument here is the fact that Microsoft stated from the very beginning that 720p was the HD sweet spot for this generation. Sony had to Hype the PS3 to high heaven with their bullcrap "1080p is True HD" and "120 fps" and "dual screen" lies.

Microsoft doesn't overstate their hardware the way Sony loves to do.

No it can't, component is only supported up to 1080i, some tv's support 1080p signal threw it but very few, so you gonna need hdmi

Almost every HDTV in existence supports VGA. Every TV that is based on LCD or DLP supports 1080p component (assuming the TV is 1080p capable of course). Try going to a Best Buy or Circuit City some time.

Furthermore, Every Xbox 360 made after 2006 has an HDMI port.

I ment support hd 1080p threw Component,You notice how I said nothing about vga since I know nothing about it.

And no every HDTV doesn't support 1080p threw component, most high end brands don't, most brands in general don't, look it up

Furthermore, I know considering I use HDMI threw my 360

But if you really care to find out just search 1080p over component, and click on any link it brings up

Most games are 720p, upscaled to 1080p. Get over it. If you want native 1080p on all games build a gaming rig.

HD ....1080p...720p is all nothing more then marketing this gen. Thats all. Most games this gen arent anything spectacular. TRUE HD will not be a must OR even working properly untill next gen. HD was just a way to get get everyone all stirred up and crazy this gen.

What's funny is that it doesn't even matter, first you need a High Quality display that's actually calibrated, not to mention large enough to notice the difference.

That Wikipedia list fails pretty mightily, yeah. Ninja Gaiden Sigma - not 1080p, it's 720p GT5 Prologue - not 1080p. it's 1280x1080 or something in gameplay MGS4 - not 1080p as mentioned, it's 1024x768 Most of the other games.. Resistance, The Darkness, Dead Space, Tekken - I don't know what resolution they actually run at, but it's almost certainly not 1080p. The 360's list fails in a pretty similar fashion. There are a tiny handful of games that actually run at 1080p native, and none of them are graphical powerhouses. Mostly PSN/XBLA games.

1. There are not 30 native 1080p PS3 games.

2. X360 can output games at 1080p via component.

3. A lot of (well euro spec atleast) tvs do not support 1080p via component.

Most of the PS3 games that support 1080p output are upscaled as well. This includes games like MGS4, GT:HD, GT5, Ninja Gaiden, and Uncharted. Some of them, like GT5 and GTHD, upscale from a resolution that's larger than 720p but it's still nto native 1080p. Wipeout HD managed native 1080p, but it dynamically drops the resolution midrace when the framerate is going to dip.

The majority of native 1080p games are PSN or XBLA titles.

Look at this way...

Native Resolution vs Upscaled Resolution vs. Antialiasing or Not.

In the end who cares what number of pixels went into it, but how good it actually looks on screen.

Most games are only capable of 720 based on what I've heard. I couldn't list 5 games that have that 1080p. Then again I don't have the right kind of tv for it anyway so I don't pay too much attention to it.

You do realize that the 360 originally only supported 1080i, but an update made that 1080p. And whatever Sony claims it can do with full 1080p and FSAA and all that... it can't. Neither consoles are optimized for true 1080p gaming. Next generation, sure.

That depends on your definition of high def. Some people may only find 1080p high def and thats it.

There are very few native 1080p games for both systems like Virtua Tennis 3. Almost all games are rendered in 720p or barely even that. 1080p is probably a thing for next-gen.

The 360 has more games running at 720p and upscales all games to 1080p

In the case of PS3, multiplats run at lower res or lower AA, if not both not forgetting worse framerates.

When it comes to the resolution debate. the 360 wins NO CONTEST

hahahha really ? prove it !

like i said no matter how you slice it's a terrible number for both consoles seeing as how they usualy pride themselves for being HD consoles

odin2019

Well... 720p is technically high def, so they are actually high def, upscaled or not. But yes, you're right.

That depends on your definition of high def. Some people may only find 1080p high def and thats it.

Fine, but High Def begins at 720p, so as an issue of semantics it is high def. But you wanna put that "True High Definition" label that most TV companies so aggressively market, the no, true 1080p natively rendered games are few an far between on either system.

lesner87

There are 10 PS3 games listed as native 1080p. It's not a complete list, I think all the 1080p sports games listed for PS3 are also 1080p on the 360. I'm not aware of any multiplat game that is a higher res on the PS3 but some that are the opposite, GTAIV etc.

[QUOTE="II-FBIsniper-II"][QUOTE="dream431ca"]The catch is, you must own the 360 elite to put out full 1080p.munu9

Why is that?

That was an old thing, because the 360 did not have HDMI (now it does for all models I think), meaing you would have to get your 1080p through component cables and only a fraction of TV's can do that.

I would say the vast majority do actually. At least most if not all of them made in the last 3 years or so.
