They are one and the same in theory.

In practice, I give the edge to Achievements only because of universal implementation.

This is why Live is worth what you pay. Every game and function is universal between all users.

I don't care too much about either... To me achievements/trophies are most fun when they are related to accomplishing a specific skill (like staying alive for a minute without firing your weapons in the first Geometry Wars - Pacifism?). Getting tons of points for completing a disc in Lost Odyssey seems silly to me.

This is the first thread I have seen about this, and if it annoys you so much, then why take your time to come and post in it?

Bothe are pretty much the same thing. Achievement gets the edge for universal implementation. Sony should have had them in the beggining.

Na this is like the second or third and trust me me there will be more. The reason I post here is to ask why bother comparing the two, If they are both the same thing. I can understand the video game arguments, but it must be a really slow day to bring this up.

They are not both the same thing.

You get trophies on the Playstation 3 and achievements on the XBOX 360.

There are things that make them different, for example, trophies use a level system but achievements have an overall Gamerscore.

So yeh, there are quite a few differences.

This thread is just for people to say which one they prefer.

both serve the same general purpose, but all things equal i think trophies have the edge.. trophies have a further break down of your accomplishments with the bronze, silver, and gold distinctions.. this effectively shows the type of gamer you are by illustrating whether or not you just slide by with alot of bronze (easy) acheivements or if you're the type of gamer that puts in the extra effort to got for the hard stuff.. further more, there's the platinum trophy that showcases the fact that you have received every trophy that a game has.. something that cant really be instantly conveyed with a gamerscore.. then beyond that breakdown, you have the simple and effective leveling system which is also superior to a general "score" imo... plus there's the added bonus of full 3D trophy represtations integrated in Home..

overall, both are great.. i just think that trophies have the advantage..

Both fulfill the exact same purpose for me - a developer going "dude, if you think that was awesome, try doing this while you play!". It doesn't matter to me whether you get a little trophy icon or a few points for it; the reward is secondary to the suggestion.

I find it funny when people say " I don't need the game telling me I'm good," or " i don't need a virtual pat on the back". Achievements/trophies are nothing like that, they are just fun unlockables that add to the gameplay by making you use weapons you wouldn't have and explore areas and do things you wouldn't have normally done without an achievement. For some games they add alot of replayablity to such as uncharted and mass effect.
