Looks like the system just wasn't that great if they keep discounting it. $40 is the lowest it's ever been. Would you get this at $40, SW? I wasn't a fan myself. I still own my original Playstation and the games on the classic just don't make it that great of a product in my opinion.

Still a hard pass. The price may be going down, but the issues still remain. You shouldn't have to hack a product to make it worthwhile.

It's only good if you hack it, and even then the pad sucks balls. Not sticks and shitty short cord.

Unless you're willing to shill out extra for a USB stick, a power-plug and a USB extender I wouldn't bother.

I'd probably pay that price for FFVII alone. I could always download to my Vita for like $10-15 but I'd rather play it on my TV and an actually physical copy goes for $100 on Amazon

It wasn't just the game selection, the emulator they used ran the games like garbage. I don't understand how something so simple could go south so bad.

Should be no more than $20 this was a disgusting piece of hardware. They would have done better to put a PSTV in a classic shell and sell PS1 classics on PSN

I severely doubt there will be a PS2 classic any time soon due to the size of the games. Ditto for Gamecube classic. It's bad enough the PS1 only had 20 games (which actually wasn't that bad when you compare the size of PS1 games vs. the size of 30 SNES games), but the PS2/Gamecube gen games got exponentially bigger.

The PS1 classic had 16GB, which would only be enough for 2 or 3 PS2 games. The SNES classic only had 512 MB because that's all that was needed. The cost of those small amounts of memory are somewhat negligible, but to do a PS2 classic you'd need at least 128GB most likely - if not 256GB - to do a proper 20+ game selection, and then all of a sudden the memory becomes a substantial amount of the cost. Considering how half assed the PS1 classic was, I severely doubt they will do what would be necessary to do a properly emulated PS2 classic.

edit: there should be a chance for an N64 classic from Nintendo though, since those games were on carts and generally much smaller than PS1 games.

It has no value at all. As something to play, it sucks. As something to collect, it sucks, because everyone thinks it's awful.

I was mostly kidding about the PS2 classic but valid points nonetheless.

Haha, damn Sony! I might actually grab one once I see it on shelves in Canada at this price. It was quite the disaster, but playing MGS again for $40 might be worth it lol.

I don’t have much nostalgia for this system as I was a Saturn and N64 owner during this gen, but I did rent a ps1 once with Destruction Derby and enjoyed it. But $40 is still steep for something I doubt I’d put more than 20 minutes into.

Still don’t want one. Raspberry Pi is much better, cheaper, and takes a lot less work to play games well on it and plays a lot of systems. Sad that this thing is completely worthless unless you hack it.

Yeah they certainly botched the hell out of this thing alright. I always see the same batch of them sitting on the shelves at my local Walmart going untouched. Probably still won’t sell at that price. I know I won’t be getting one.

I'm surprised they haven't offered a bunch of "PS1 classics" playable on PS4 like they did for PS3. It is essentially free money, or at worst it's fluff they can add to PS+. The collection of PS1 games I have playable on my PS3 is probably like 3x larger than the PS1 classic. That being said, I found that very few of them held up and I dont' think I actually spent the time to "beat" any of the games. So maybe it shouldn't be surprising that they haven't offered them, Sony probably sees the player statistics.

That being said, if they aren't going to straight up dump those ports onto the store, the "classics" should probably be remastered/remade. Although some games will hold up better than others, there are certainly genres (like JRPG) where it's really just the graphics that need to be updated for higher resolution screens. Obviously stuff like FPS on PS1 mostly aged horribly and shouldn't really be bothered with for the most part.

To few games, that was the real problem with PS1 classic.

NES and SNES classics had many games I had never played before, so were of good value. On PS1 classic, all the games were such well known titles that pretty much ever retro gamer had them on their shelves already.

If the console had had ten more games, of less known pedigree, it would've been much more valuable. And the original PS1 had so many awesome games that nobody even knows about to choose from...

It also doesn't help PS Classic sales that many 16-bit SNES games have aged like wine, while the early 3D PS1 games have aged like milk.

Both NES and SNES mini will run PS1 games in the PS classic better than PS classic itself.

PS1 Classic for $40 is what it should have been! I can deal with the BS Sony was offering if that was $40 launch, but paying $100 for what it's offering really was a turnoff! I'll probably go buy it after I'm done filing my tax return.
